lliee hemes to the Copp.rht" id declaration th it
the war is a failure, and cannot restore the I'nion :
Says ,ieiitenant-(tenor.il (Jrin'. :
"Tbe end U not far distant, if wo will only he
trpe to ourselves. All we want now to Insure an
eu..y restoration of the Union Is a determined
unity f sentiment North."
Says Muior-Oeticral Hooker :
"This I'nion must be preserved, and there Is no
way of preserving it tint by the power of our
arms by Hublina: the conspiracy to dc.itli. This
Kebellion la tottering while I spe ik ; it is going
down, and will soon tumble Into ruin."
Sajs jMnior-denerul Me.nle:
"Uismissing, as now useless to discuss, all
'mentions as to the origin of this war, we have
daily and hourly evidences that it exists, and that
it can only Ik) terminated by hard lighting, and
by determined etlorta to overcome the armed
enemies of the Government."
Says Minor-General llurn-ide :
"Would it not he cowardly for us to say that
this Kebellion cannot be crusticj, and the autho
rity of the GoTcrnient sustained ? Thero is in
my mind no question of it. There can be no such
thing as laying down of arms, or cessation of
hostilities, until tbe entire authority of the Gov
ernment is acknowledged by every citizen of our
country."
Says Major-General I.ogan :
"The greatest victory of io Rebels, greitor
than fifty Mannasnses, und their only one that
can give them a particle of hope, will be to do lout
the war party nt the Incoming campaign."
Sav Major-General Mix :
"My desire is to do all In my poiver to sustain
the Govorumcnt in its efforts to put down the
Kebellion an object to be etl'ei ted. in my judg
ment, by a steady and unswerving prosecution of
tbe war.
Bays the old veteran, M ijor-Quneral Wool :
"Nothing, for aught that I can discover, will
save the I'nion and Its Government, but the suc
cesses of Giant, Sherman, larragttt, and Mi")
ti.lan."
l'robably there Is not a single M ijor-aoneral
in the aruiy, or even brigadier, in active service,
who does riot bold the6 sumo convictions, lu-
rleed.it mav be said that the wnolearmy, as a
body, is possessed by an absolu e assurance that
the only way to deul with this Kebellion is to con
quer it, and that this conquest is already nearly
Aecnmnlished.
It is true that there lias been a nart of this war
which was 1111 absolute, t allure. 11 is in 11 p in 01
it which was under the charge of George II.
McClcllnn. It a striking fact that this General
should have held command of the niot important
department in the seat of war for fourteen
months, and not gained from the Rebels during
nil that time the permanent posses-Ion of one
foot of soil. At the time whan hn was deprived
of his command, Noveni'ier S, ISU'2, ho uettl illy
had less of Virginia within the loyal lines than
when he first assumed command of the depart
ment. Norfolk left out of the question, which
poMlitut was taken and held, not liv him b.tt by
the navy, there had been a potitlvo rutrogres-
This could bo said of no other independent
commutider. General Grant had swept the bulk
of the enemv's forces from Kentucky and from
Middle Tennessee, and had established himself
in Northern Mississippi. General Mitcliull bad
advanced l.is lines to Huntsville, in Northern
Alabama. Generals Curtis and Sigel had whipped
the Rebel armies out of Missouri aud Western
Arkansas. Admiral l-'arnigut had conquered
New Orleans, nnd General Butler hud planted
the flag tlnoiigh lower iouisiairi.
Generals lltirnside and Foster bad taken every
position of Importance in Kastern North Carolina,
gave Wilmington. Admiral Uiipont and General
T. W. fahcrman hud clloeted important lodgments
on the coa-t of South Carolina. Generals Gil
more had reduced l'ort rulaski, tho defence of
Satanriab, and made advances into Florida.
K very where was progress, save In the depart ucnt
nnder charge of McClellau.
There, in spite of the unsurpassed fighting by
our ever glorious rank aud lilc, was nohing but
a complete failure in everything undertaken,
0 far as George II. McClellau bus had to do
with it, and only so far as he has had to do with
it, mav tho war be culled a failure. And It is
precisely this which makes him u supremely lit
nominee of tbe purty which has done, and is still
doing, its utmost to make the war an abortion.
It In not btrange that the people prefer the testi
mony of those b have been willing und able to
tight, concerning the progress and the promise of
the war, to the buru usserti ius of those who are
too false-hearted, or too faint-hearted, to engage
in the war or sustain it. The outspoken convic
tion of one General of the right stuff has inlinitiily
more weight with the loyal people than any pos
aible extent of Copperhead decrying and belying.
The war, instead of being a lailui 0, is the mo-t
stupendous military success In history; and will,
as nothing cl-e could, consolidate he found. itions
of this JUpubllc so as to lit it to endure for ages.

The most daring and perhaps tho largest rob
bery that ever occurred In this Nute w isconnnit
ted at Sterling, Whiteside cuun'y, Illinois, Au
gust 27. The olllcc of W. A. S inborn, banker,
was entered on Saturday night, nnd forty thou
sand taken fiotu his safe", about three tlneis ind of
which was in gold and silver, seventeen thousand
in lcgal-tiudcr cum ney, and the b.ilan -e in
I'niit'd Stires Ninds. The amount on deposit ut
the time was comparatively small, being about
onc-toiirth of the amount taken, tire balance
being Mr. Sanlioru's private funds, including
ninny valuable papers.
The sale was one of Herring & Co.'s make, and
was I'lirehnsed of them by Mr. Sanborn but a
short lime since, withihe assurance, from them
that it was one of thtir best burglar-pro ,f. The
safe was oik ned by driving the point ot' a pick
axe behind the pi ite covering the hick, and then,
bv the use of a "jimmy" and o her tool the lock
was torn out of the sale. The inside burglar
chest extended the lull width ot tho sate, and
wns constructed ot live thicknesses of alterntte
steel and iron plates. This, however, olfered
less resistance than tho outside of the safe, as
tbe lock wus forced with apparently little ell'ort.
The robbery was committed on Saturday night,
and as it was not discovered until Sun lay even
ing, the rascals bad a long start of tho detectives,
who set about ferreting out the nuitier imme
diately on its discovery. This seems to be a
panlciilnrly unfortunate case, as Mr. Sanborn
had just completed a line banking bouse into
whicii be wns about to move lu a lew days.
It is not improbable that this is Hie sunc
"gat g" that robbed the safe of Messrs T i tint Jv
Jack, Cbillicothe, Peoria county, about three
weeks since, of SlO.fHKI. Theirs was a Duryci
Forsyth sale, with a steel plate che-t inside, sup
posed to be a Ditrgiar prooi, wuu u omuyci
patent lock.
