We tind a perfect explanation of his military

" I'ecause thai m not the name. Our policy is
to exhaust the Rebels and ourselves in inde

l-'niiii time immemorial n sort of t.ihhmi , lt
ti presenting the 1'assion and Crucifixion of our
Saviour, used to be enacted in the streets of
Monaco on Good Friday. Abel Rendu gives the
lollowtng graphic description of It :
As Ihe clock strikes nine, the city, illuniin Ue,1

the palace is hccii, do. or (ted as if for a festival. A

and l;irai s him 10 bis followers, who him1 his
hands, rennrer him with rod , and throw over
him in mockery the purplo rolie. Ilerod, prouder
of hi- absurd pira-ol than a pacha of three ttii-;
Peter, brandishing bis sword; Malchus, with his
bleeding ear; the chief priests and ancients clam
oriDg for our Saviour's blood ; I'date washing his
hands ; the soldiers casting lots for the garments
of Christ ; and the executioner preparing himself
for bis cruel olllce, all appear in succession. Then
Jesus, pale and sinking, Is laden with his heavy
crwss, he is nailed to it, and soon gives up the
ghost.
The accusing cock, the cries of death, the
sponge dipped in tlio g ill, the sharp lance, tho
wi oping Magdalen, St. John and his lamb, are
ail represented ; but that is not enough, the
tragedy soon merges into a farce.
A gioup difficult to descrlbo unexpectedly pre
fents itself it con-lsts of our First Parentsof tho
Tempter, and of the Angel with tho darning
swoid. Then come Judith and her maid, St.
Lawrence and bis gridiron, St. I'hilomcne and
her anchor, and after them the Twelve Apostles,
carrying the various in-tntnients of their martyr
dom. In the midst waves the banner ot Rome.
All these notabilities, resuscitated for the occa
sion, hasten to assist nt the solemn inhumation
of Christ.
Tho body of the Saviour is carried along on a
bier, covered hvadais, and surrounded bytoreh
bcartrs. The drums beat. The holy women
weep. The people mutter prayers as tho proces
sion enter the chapel and ose'ons the victim to
bis tomb. A setnion on the Passion concludes
tho strange exhibition solemn and impressive
to the a t' rs, grotesque and unedifying in the
eyes of str ingers.

magnificent and ingenious character had been
provided for it at the expense of the Siieiele

for the occasion a brass band, and charts-red a
steamboat capable of conveying eight hundred
pilgrims from Nice to the Rock, on the sagacious
calculation that many of the strangers who camo

given by the Journal de Mimarn of the evening's
amusement tallies pretty nearly with thii given
by Abel Rendu sixteen years ago, with tho ex

our first parents plucked apples, and cast them to

"Tins OM l.niclmli Umtleiunn."
Prcvlous to my becoming so celebrated for tho
singing of ''Farewell to tho Mountains," I had
pii.dnccd a song which spread its popularity over
the civilircd world almost ns rapidly as if the
wires of tlio telegraph had transmitted its melody

party in the city whero music was to be the pre

amateur of some celebrity, Mr. Crow, w ho was a
bookseller in Lamb's, Conduit street, and pos

melodies charmingly, generally without accom

'Rich und rare were the gems she wore" was one
of his great songs; in lac, I thi'ik lie rarely

1 his evening hu threw oil' his bardie mantle
and sang a song we had never heard before,
"The Old i'.nglish Gentleman." All were In
raptures with it. "Whose was it ?" ' Whero did
it come from :" " How did you obtain it ?" were
the questions put liom all quarters, terminating
with " Do sing it again!" As for in :; I was in
ecstacies; I saw In an instant what I could do

obtained whither I might iutrodu .0 it to the
public, &c r I felt it was a foitune to me if I
could lie ihe pcr-on to do so. Mr. Carowe in
