At the commencement of the Revolutionary
war there resided in (Sussex county, Delaware, a
Ci ntleinun of fortune, urbanity of manners, and
great popularity iu that and the adjoining county
oIMhi j land, iinineil Caldwell, in the language of
the county called Kihvell. He was a sportsman,
whose breed of horses and game-cocks obtained
wide celebrity ; and his judgment of tho points
of a hor.so or the mako of a fowl none ventured
to dispute. His favorite axiom was, the character
of the progeny depends more on the mother than
ou the father; und hence his reply to all ques
tions respecting the breed of game fowls was, bo
v our cock ever so game, you cannot depend on
his progeny, but must look to tho hen. My obser
vation has led me to select a nine hen, und in no
Instance have 1 failed to hatch a good game-cock
from a blue lien's egg.
In consequence of such nn opinion expressed
by such a man, ut all mutches and cock-lights,
the tirst question was us to tho color of tho hen,
and lieiiiuutly a certificate sworn to before a
magistrate accompanied the fowls. Kticu ques
tions engaged the time of tho peaceful men of
Delaware when the news reached them of the
liattlo of Lexington, fought on the Huh of April,
177.1, between Ihe royal troops and the militia of
Massachusetts. This roused the peoblu to arms,
and nowhere was there more martial spirit dis
played than in the s.tato of Delaware. In a very
short lime a full regiment was raised, and a day
appointed to organize on Dover (irecn. On tho
morning of that ever memorable day a full com
pany from Sussex county was the lirst to enter

coop of fowls, the famous blue hen's chickens,
flowing lustily.
Having been tho first on the ground, Captain
Kilwell's Company was assigned to the right, and
before the regiment took up the line of march,
the boys were already called Ihe gamecocks, who,
retorting on their comrades called them the
chickens. After their gallant conduct in cover
ing the retreat on Long Island, tho whole army
saluted the regiment as the "blue hen's chickens."
They were ou Long Island, and covered the re
tienti they were ut Trenton and I'rinceton, nt
Ilrandyivine, Cermuntown, and Monmouth, in ihe
north ; and when the torics in the Carolitms hud
mane their peace with t'oruwallis, and driven the

On the "lutal field of Camden" Kilwell fell
there the gamecock fought his last round. Lee,
in lii- memoirs of the southern war, tells us:
"The regiment of Delaware wus nearly annihi
lated, und Lieutenant-Colonel Vaugh.tn and Ma
jor l'aiti.n being taken, its remnant, less thtn
two companies, weie alter wards placed under the
orders ol kirkwood, senior Captain. Contrary to

which has recently excited so much attention in
England, has been reprinted in New York. The
wilier argues that bread, butter, milk, sugar,
