We arc led then to question the propriety of
the terra "fast," if intended to co;n;ilim;iit
modern management iu our "go-ahead" coun
try, ut thu expense of tht plain and prudent
past, whether at home or abroad. Tho pro
gress of the sciences has been slow and sure,
and discoveries of great value have not been
so fast and frequent In our day as lias been the
use and application of them. For Instance,
the fast use of strum In travel and navigation,
in our time nnd country, results In the fast
destruction of human life.
The fast Increase of medical theories nn;l
schools Is not fast Increasing the power ot
conquering disease, and the same rule seems
to apply even to the fast Increase of sects and
churches, by w hich ',ve do not see that mail
grow better very fast. The age seems to us
slow in some oi the substantial objects of life,
while It Is Oust inmost ol the fiivolous ones.
We are blow to estimate tho value of tho
bleusings around us, social and political, for
we trifle with inestimable privileges, for the
want of which Immunity groans In many por
tions of the globe, filled w ith intelligent beings
like ourselves.
We are slow to perceive; our defects and in
conslsti ncics, whether as a nation or Indiv idu
ally; slow to inculcate habits of frugality ;
we are slow to give to Intellect and moral
vHues the ascendancy over bruto forcfl or
fortuno, and nllovy tlic "uilohtjr dollar" to I
