follow tht they mnt be restricted to the
courts and alleys, whence the shrewd rag
pickers hftNteo to remove them before the very
patrte has time to dry. In many European
citleo, but especially In Germany, the posting
of a bill upon ft wall is punbdmblc by a beary
flne.
In TU Aa and Pari, at certain street Inter
sections, there are erected pllJari of artificial
stone, which belong to the corporation, and
fcr a certain premium those who delre It can
have the privilege of wing them to post their
bills, the price being about eqnal per dy to
what a flmt-clsss newspaper would charge In
ita TYg'.dar advertlnlng columns. Tho plan,
however, Is adopted to but a limited exU nt,
snd tbe tendency of the government strictures
tnfline.' to a discouragement of the object.
We conclude from long experience that ad
verting In periodicals and newxpapers Is of
all ftluil the most prontaMe and expedient.
No rasn who has relied solely upon this
meaus has ever regretted the c xpendlture, in
view of thoreults; while we could, if we
chrw.i, point to InstAncet In which this
city hss been literally flooded with
ep-mlve circulars without producing
as conwquonce a single dollar's worth of
advantage, roster", excepting for amuse
ment, or those abominable and nameless sub
jects with which we would not for any price
pollute our columns, should take their place
among the traditions of a bygone age. They
are odious to the sight, disfiguring to the wall
or building against which they are painted,
and, we repeat, do no good.
But in a newspaperof respectable character,
advertising Is to limine, what manure is to
soil. It meets the eye of the reader at periods
when he Is at leisure to noto lu Import. He
sees it day after day, and by and by a want
suggests itself: Btow easy it then becomes to
estalJlxh a coincidence between the want and
the place at which it can bo supplied I The
newspaper accomplishes this, and thus tho
bread which the advertiser has cam upon the
watt return, eTea though It bo "after many
days."
In this respect we think our obervallon
qallflee us to proffer a further suggestion:
The paper In which to advertise should be
selected according to the character of the
merchandise to which attention Is desired;
and, therefore, it becomes evident that the
most valuable medium for advertising Is not
always the Journal having the widest and
most Indiscriminate circulation. We will
explain : Would not a dealer In dlimondi
and rwe Jewelry prefer to Insert his
advertisement In a paper of say of ten
thousand circulation amona- neoala of
wealth, refinement, and elevated tastes,
rather than another Issuing 0,000 copies,
which circulated chiefly among those who do
not buy such costly and luxurious wares?
Yi ould a butcher advertise his beef and mutton
in a Journal devoted to vegetarians, or a m
fhcturer of Ore-buckets seek publicity for his
products through the columns of a Ladies'
Magaaine? Or would a bookseller expect
remunerative results from advertising classical
works In a gazette whose sole natrons were
chambermaid and milliner girls ? Assuredly
not.
The paper In which general business adver
tising is of most advantage, is one that is res. J
by families the paper which, after the fmilv
head has perused its contents, Is taken home
for the eniertalnment and Instruction of the
household. To furnish such a paper It Is
essential that all advertlsementsofan improper
character should be excluded, and that the
portion of the paper devoted for this purpose
shall be as free from grossness as tho strictly
editorial columns.
