Miss Sibclair was sixty-four years of age. She

of the higher classes, and the latter describing

grotesque which approached the terrible. Years
before, in MucMh, ho hud personated a rcd
beuded, tirc-enling, whisky-drinking Scotch
man ; and in "Sbylock," a scrvllo. I'awniug, obse
quious, yet, when emergency arose, a pas-ion-ate
and yindictivo Jew. In tho Yellow Dwarf ha
was the jaundiced embodiment of a spirit of
1'iiemui cvii ; cruuy, muicvoieni, greedy, insa

spite an Afrit, a Djinn, a Ghoul, a spawn of
hbcilan. How thai monstrous oi'ungc-uiwny

of cars were projected forwards, like unto
those of a dog! How hatefully those atra

He darned the Lancashire clog hornpipe; ho rat

became Inspired. The Jack Puddiug suddenly
drew tho rotnumta over his clogs. You were
awe-stricken by the intensity, the vehemence, be

Ttol rrt lltouph's paiody of the FraHco
Itnlinn tragedy. Tho love, the hate, the scorn,
of the abandoned wife of 'Jason,' tho diabolical
loathing in which she holds 'Crensa,' tho
tigerish aflection witb which sho regards the
children whom she is afterwards to slav all these
were portrayed by llobson, through the medium,
be it always remembered, of doggerel and slang,
with astonishing force and vigur. . The original
'Medea,' tho grout Histori herself, came to see
Hobson.andwus delighted with and amazed ttt

thiough the bull's hide turgot of an unknown

In private life, Itobson was a singularly modest
and nervous man, tbongh on tho stage he could
indulge in Ihe most extravagant eccentricities of
acting. Hud be livid, he would in all proba
