Pome years ago, interesting discoveries of
htinian remains were made In raves In the sou'h
western part of France, and the British G ivern
mcnt has appropriated ene thousand ponnds to
purchase one of these caves, to be placed under
charge of Professor Owen, on behalf of the
Drltlsh Museum. The Manrbes'er (lutr,linn
gives tbe following particulars about these cases
and their contents:
"Tho locality of the raves Is the department of
Dordognr, in tho province of I'erigord. It Is
rhlifly on tbe banks of tributaries of the riraf
Itotdogne (which reachos the sea a little north o
Bordeaux tbat the caverns are found. In the
Taller of the Ver.cre, one of tbe principal of them)
tributaries, are several caverns, one of which, that
nf I'.y7irs, whs bonght last year bv Messrs. K.
I.artct and II. Christy, two eminent geologists.
These gentlemen divided tbe floor of the cave
into compartments, and, with a generosity worth
of all pralpe, they have sent specimens of the
M cks thus obtained to the principal museums In
i.urrpeaDd elsewhere. In this way Mr. riant
received, about a fortnight ago, for the S ilford
Koyal Museum, a slab weighing al.out lire hun
dred weight. It was broken in the Journey Into
tao parts, each of which has been mounted nndcr
a glass shade. The (-baking it bad received on
the way rubbed ort a iUanllty of H'hrii weighing
abt.nt twenty pooods, and this Mr. Plant has
carefnlly wasbest and sifted, and separated atom
from atom. His patience hat ben fully re
warded, as he has found m tides af the deepest
interest, lie lore en'ering into details it may
be well to say that by tar the largest number
of bones found in the caverns of Perigord are
thoe of tbe reindeer, an animal which has not
been knawa within the historic; period south of
the northern shores ef the Baltic. It is impos
ibl even to approximate to the antiquity
of an age so remote; hut Sir Charles Lyelf,
in his "Antiquity of Man," estimates that the
cave-dwellers, tokens of whose manners of lite
we are about to describe, flourished n.'t
less than from ten to fifteen ttxwrsarid years ago.
Thi se tokens consist a compact mass of earth,
chaiconl, Hint weapons and tools, bones, needles,
Ac, which have been hardened Into a solid ag
glomerate, chiefly by the action of the calcareous
droppings from tbe root of the rave. This ag-
Sloii.etatc, or breccia, as it fa technically styled,
as formed an artificial floor to- the cam of vaii
rn thickness", from three inches to ton inches. '
The praetioe of tbe ancient inhabitants of throw
ing clown the lnes and other re aa mints of their
feasts upon the floor of the rasre In which they
continued to dwell, receives illustration from the
detxriptloa given by the Dasihlsiniesinnary of tho
Ian century, Hans Egcde, of ths- habits of tbe
Kqtiinisux. lie says their hnta were veritable
charnel-houses, heaped op with fat and the raw
fltsh ot maainsals and lish, which, together with
the remnants of former teatirs, created a smell
which a Kuropean could not endure, but which
did not incommode a nutlve- tn the least.
"At some period ibseineiit to the human oc
rrpancy of the cavern, a flood has rnsbed through
it, bringing in its course, and leaving In the cave,
a number of boulder stones. These have been
fixed tn tbe artltlcisri floor of breccia bv the slow
Imt nnfalling mason the droppings from the
chalk strata overhead. "
The articles in the Salford Museum Include
flint knives, boas needles, broken teeth, and sim
ilar objects. The conclusion deduced from the
exploration of these caves ts that a human race in
habited the cares in the region since called Peri
gord at tho same time as the reindeer, the auruch,
and other animals which are now only found
in extreme latitudes; thai this people had no
k now ledge of the me of metals, their only arms
and toots being either of broken and unpolished
flints, or of bones or horns ot animals; that they

Tbe London Athenu-um says :
"FnFther a. counts are given, in tha Burarlan

berg. l'rtilessor Wagner declares that the pile
buildings date from the Bronze age not tho Ago
of irou.e of Ilyron, but the one which preceded
the Celtc-i ieimiudc iron age. The hypothesis of
l'rofessor Desor, that they belong to the iS'.one
a'e, has pot been continued by the discovery of
any arms or implements of flrustoueor serpen
tine, though a bone knife-handle which baa bceu
found is stated to bo identical with tha bone
handles of lirestomt knives found in the Lake
of Neufchaiel, aud on tbe island itsolf, in
laying the foundations of a building, a
spear-Lead of lireslono was discovered. It
would therefore seem that two or three periods
are represented by the lake-houses of Starnburg.
(Similar discoveries have been made in the Chiem

north of the Chiemsee, and kas an especial In
