HALT A CENTURY OF MUSICIANS.
Keseollect Insist or Henry FhlllliN.
Mr. Henry FhllUps is a well-known English
ingcr, who has been many years before the pub
lic, and has Just printed an interesting volume of
. gossip concerning the musicians he has met dur
ing bis career, and also concerning his own ad
ventures. Mr. Phillips' father was, we are told,
a gentleman by birth, and admitted a barrister,
with tbe advantage of a private fortune to sup
port him on the uphill way of bis profession,

Ill, who then frequently vi-iteJ that watering,
place, and she took altogether the fancy
of Mr. Richard Phillips, still a man of worldly
means, whose wife she becamo, and to whoso
dramatic ciieuits she was joined. Of the parents
Mr. Henry ThUlips was born at Bath in tbe first
year of tbe present century. Thereupon Mr.
Richard Phill ps, the father, turned manager, and
bought a circuit of his own in Wales, which in a
very short time devoured all his property, "even
to some rows of houses in too Utiston road,
London."
EARLY STRl.'OOLES.
When Henry was eight years old his father
took a fbort snnuner engagement fur himself
nly at Ilurrogate. where the son's educntipn
fODSitiea in tiding made to read mid declaim
Sterne and Milton and to learn the rudiments of
Latin. But even before be could speik plainly
be bad sung many songs tanitbt biin by his
mother. Could he not help tbe fortunes of bis
hon e by being produced as a singing K-jsciui?
So he was duly announced for one evening only,
aang afier the play "The Bay of Hiscay," was
. applauded loudly, and received the kisses of the
ladies. A successful concert at York, where tbe
. boy sang Arne's "Hymn of Eve," "l'liellayof
Iliscay, and another song, helped the unlucky
' family npon its way to London.
After many vain attempts to bring oat the
inging Koscius, young Henry Phillips fonud his
first opening when a singing Doy was wanted at
tbe old Ilayinatket Thoarrc, to play the robber's
boy in The Iron Chttt. His tirst uttsnipt having
given satisfaction, he was retained to sing in that
part for live shillings a night, and in the next
season be was retained at l)rury L me, to sing
for the same salary in the music of Macbeth
whenever he was wanted. The hoy received a
little occupation of this sort, and some snatches
of musical Instruction, beiug apprenticed to Mr.
John Keeve, sou of the composer of a glee then
popular. But when verging upon sixteen, his
voice broke, and bis clear and high soprano
dirappeared. Then he tried to earn money in
akvtcbitig, and having ma le a parcel of sketches,
took them, with no profitable result, to a shop in
Piccadilly.
"Tbe next day I started early on the same
orraiid, till, having exhausted all the localities I
inew anything of, I agulu returned home, having
resolved to convert our parlor win. low into a
abop, and so exhibit my drawings. All beiug
arranged to my satisfaction, by tapes drawn
. across, I pinned my pictures to them, with tbe
prices marked j anil lasfure you very respect
able and buims-liko the window looked, bear
lag at the s nine time evidence that mine was not
an extravagant establishment, as tbe highest
price was one shilling, which graduated down to
a penny. I soon sold some, and my spirits rose
rapidly. Not many days elapsed ere my shop
- sutracted the attention of a person connected with
Ackvrruon's repository, in the Strand, who
orlered me employment to color engraving, such
as were Iben the rage, viz., long strips of na j-
jeets drawn out oi a tuiie, like amoving panorama,
"One was A Trip to Paris,' the others A Trip
to Holland," 'Kdinburg,' A, Ka. This I
cbterfully accepted, and prophesied a tlouri-h-big
tiadc at band. What with my employment
and my shop a commercial importance grew
upon me. At this coloring 1 luo .red eight and
sen hours a dsy lor ncarlv two years, and fre
quently earned from thiity sliiiliugi t two pounds
a week, wbii h not only contributed much to the
conifoit and support of my lamilv. hut also
enabled me lo purchase cheap copies of the songs
f Handel, Haydn, and Moart, from which I
commenced my ntudy of the great master'. The
slllhcully was bow to ptactise thum, ior 1 bad no
instiumint.
"Fortune, however, still favored me; for hiv
ing a really elaborate drawiug of a laundress's
drying giound, and plucd it as the centre ot at
traction in mf window, it was observed by a lady
living opposite, who took in washing, kept a
mangle, and bad a piano-forte. Shu souudily
made my acquaintance, anl avk'd me to tea,
which invitation I eagerly accepted. Mho was a
little person, with a da-h of manner rather above
her callir g, and, though elderly, skippsd about
sometimes like a young girl. Our conversation
Tcftrring to her younger days, it appeared she
Lad been a dancer and chorus-singer at some of
tbe London theatres. Finding that I also had
found employment in that honorable branch of
the profusion, i-lie was overjoyed, told me to
come and drink tea as often as I liked, aud added
that I might practise on ber piano from morning
till night, every day in the week."

He had to thirouglily practised sonic of the
best music that he had the Messiah "by heart."
This labor brought bim an Important succc-s.
'Mr. Toiler informed me that a new church a
Clifton, Hnstol, was about to he opened wi h a
grand ferlbrmance of tho 'Messiah,' w hich Sir
t iiorge malt wns to conduct, and that ha should
tiy to j luce mo us the principal bass.
"This wns rare news indeed j he promised to
write immediately to Kir (iconic, and cu.lenvnr
to obtain his consent. Sir George objected, on
the ground that I must be a very young m ill,
and the ritk was too great to run upon such au
occasion,
"This threw a fad gloom over me. Mr. I.odcr
still persevered ; and it whs luvangcd that as Sir
(tt otgc was com hilt to Hath, he should hear me,
ii nil that the bills should not be issued until after
our Interview.
"Tl.cso preliminaries settled, and the morning
appointed for the interview, Mr. 1. alcr begged
me to bring balf-a-guiuca, and present it alter
the hearing, as in consideration of a lesson. This

of vast amount, end I well knew what I should

was no avoiding so positive it command, and lie.
cordinglv I, with my half guinea, went to Mr.

"Sir (leorgo received me in a largo empty

where ttood a grand pisno-lortc.
" 'So, sir,' said he, ' vou ure bold enough to take
nnon yourtclt tho task of singing fhioiigh the

"I answered, that I was.
" 'Will, let me bear you here is a copy. Do
you think you can see over my shoulder ?'
"I teplicd, '.No doubt; but it is not necessary
" 'Oh, Indeed !' said Sir George. 'What, you
can sing it from memory, eh ? Well, we shall
see. Perhaps you'll oblige mo by standing at tho
other enu oi the instrument.
' 'Certainly, sir.'
"And aay went Sir George with, 'Thns snith

claimed ;
" 'I'pon my honor, that is very cvtraordinnry !'
"I thought he was jo-ting, lor 1 could teo
nothing extraordinary about it.
" 'Perhaps.sir,' he continued, 'you eotildoblige
me with tbe next song, "Tho People that walkelb
in Darkness," in the same way ?'
" 'Certainly,' I said.
"And through it I went with equal truth. I
observed a smilo uon bis countenance every now
nnd then, when coming to tho chromatic 'pus
sages, evidently thinking I should trip; but no,
nothing eonld move me from my path.
"When I bud finished, ho said: "That's
enough; I am quite satisfied. And now let me
ask you, do yott know anything of the tenor
songs :'
"Yes, sir. all.'
'"And the soprano ?'
"'All.'
" 'And the contralto i'
"'All.'
" 'And possibly the chorusscs ;'

"I then oilcred him the foe, neatly done up in
white pajHT.
" 'Whufs this r' said he.
" 'Your fee, sir. Allow mo to consider this us
a lcs.son.'
' 'Nothing of the kind,' snld Kir George, 'put It
in yonr pocket,' and placing bi.s baud on my
shoulder lie continued, 'I have b' on much pleased
and sin prised, and will be your trictul as long as
I live.' "
Eur that flr-t appearance as principal singer in
an oratorio the fortunate youth hud not the ne
cessary suit ot black. Ho walked fifteen miles to
buy some black cloth as a bargain, and made bis
own waistcoat and trowsers out of it, but the
coat being hoohd b in be mortgaged his en
gagement to a tailor, and thus got over his lust
peiplexity.
51U81CH1 discipline among vocalists was much
stricter in those days thin it is now, nnd Mr.
Phillips gives a very good illustration one
which might be frequently borne in mind with
great advuubigo. Mrs. Salmon, though iu gene
ral a strict Handelian, once introduced a wholly
unwarrantable cadn:a at the close of "From
Mighty Kings," at the Antiout Concerts. Mr.
Greatorcx, the organist, no sooner perceived it
than he suddenly turned tho full power of the
organ upon ber with tho final chord. For an
instunt all was confusion. Tho lady sat down,
and becinne fearfully red, while the noble direc
tor rose to inquire tho cause, when Grcornrex
turned round, and (twiddling his thumbs as bo
was wont ), said, very quietly, "A cmlriun, my
lord !" "Oh !" said bis lordship; and the conceit
proccedtd with its usual solctiiu ty.
I'AOANINI ANI 11NIILKY.
Dragonetti and Lindlry were both on intimate
terms with Mr. Phillips, and he has much that is
interesting to toll of tln-m. The former he de
scribes as eccentric and childish in ordinary mat
ters almost to the verge of insanity. Ho possessed
tbe celebrated double bass given bim by a Nea
politan monk, for which he had repeatedly been
( fit rs d 1000, and his hands had become mis.
slnpcn, aud almost without form, from constant
ph ying. His great manifestation of eccentricity
was bis constant custom id' traveling, accompa
nied by a large collection of dolls of all si.es,
some of which he would always d ime at the
window of a co'ieb when passing through a vil
lage. He and Liniiley were great frieuds.and
bo h immoderate Miutl takcis.
Lindley wus a gr. ut stutterer, und the follow
ing story used to be constantly told to his disad
vantage: "Olc duy, when wull.in;: down the high street
ot the city ol Exeter, he observed a scafiring
lookitig man standing on lhe opposite side- of the
way w ith a gray parrot perched on his linger.
UntiJcy crossed over, and accosting thn man,
said: 'is mut p p-p-p-p-parrot tor sule : 'Yes,
replied the man. 'lloiv m ui-m in-ui-much ?' 'A
guinea, was the risixinse.' C-c-o-c-c-citn it
sp-sp-sp-sp-sp-spiak r 'tea, said the iclloiv, 'a
precious eight bitter than you can. or I'd chop
bis bead off.' "
This reminds Mr. Phillips ol the stammering
fugitive w ho is euid to hav. commenced an appeal
lor ' Una qua qua "Oh! said u pursuing;
troopir, "l can t wait tor you, and ran him
throueb.
Mr. Phillips wus at Puganiiii's llrst concert, and
was much impressed by tbc strange, ghost-liko
aspect ot Hie ioliuist,as lie glided on to tho stage
in tbc peculiar munner allectod by him. A shud

the slightest anxiety, or even interest, as to the
reception accorded him, but played what wus
allotted to hiin without the movement of a mus
cle, und glided oft the Huge at the close as ghostly
in appearance as ever. Of Plsaroni he relates that
so extreiuo wus her ugliness that whenever she
was oilcred au engagement she always sent her
miniature, adding, "if alter this you venture to
engage me i win come.
