'Daring and Snfftrlng; a Hitory of tho Great Railroad Adventure," and "Beyond the Lines," are the titles of two very Interesting books pub lished by J. W. Daughaday, No. 1308 Chonnut street. Philadelphia. They are true stories of the war, written by returned prisoners, aud no jowapce could be more exciting, The flrst book it by Lieutenant William Pettinger, one of tb.it r little band of daring men who penetrated the enemy's lines In Georgia, In 18fi2, seized on ntlre railroad train and dushed off with it into the heart of the country, to destroy the railroads and Interrupt the movement of the Rebel armies. The expedition was audacious, but It nearly ncceeded. We quote, for the pleasure of our readers, the graphic acconnt of the adventure which Lieutenant Pottlnger has give. The rost f the book is devoted to an accoant of prison . life, and the efforts of the prisoners to escape. It is well to premise that the adventurers were dressed in citizens' clothes, and hod .traveled tin. inspected as for as Marietta, where they seized ""-in. Andrews had gone to another hotel, and warned the members of the party there to be in readiness to take passage Two ol them, Haw kins and Porter, who bad arrived earlier, were not warned, and were, therefore, left behind. It waa not their fault, as they had no certain know ledge of the time we were to start, but rather thought it wonld be the next day. i . There were just twenty of ns on the train, An drews aud nineteen others, of whom several ware " engineers. We went along very quietly and in cilenalvely, Just as any other passengers would do, until we reached liig Shanty. I knew that ' we were to tuko possession of the train at this place, but did not Just know how it waa to be done. I thought we would probably have to fight, and compel the conductor, train hands, and nseugcrt to get off. We might have done this, . it would have required very quick work, for there were then some ten thousand troops, mostly conscripts, camped there, and a guard was pla ed watching the train. But a tar butter plan was adopted. As soan a we arrived, the engineer, conductor, and many of the passengers went over to tliu , eating bonne. Now was our opportunity ! An drews, and one or two others, went forward ami examined the track, to see if everything wow in . readiness for a rapid start. Obi whut a thrilling moment was thatl Our hearts throbbed thick and fast with emotions we dared not manifest to those who were loaliug in differently around. In a minute, which seemed an hour, Andrews came bock, opened the atmr, avnd said, very quietly and carelessly, " Let us go, now, bojs." Just as quietly and carelessly we arose and followed him. Tbe passengers who were lazily waiting for the train to move on and carry them to their destination, saw nothing in , the tritntactlon to excite their suspicions. Lei surely we moved forward reached the bead of the train then Andrews, Brown, our engineer, and Knight, who also could run an engine, leaped on the locomotive ; Alfred Wilson took tbe top of uiecuraa Draaesman, ana tue remainder or us clambered into the foremost baggage car, which, Willi two others, had been previously uncoupled from tbe binder purt of the train. For one mo ment of most intense suspense all was still then a pull a jar a clung and we were ilyiug away on our perilous Journey. There uru times in the Ufa of man when whole years ot intensent enjoyment seem eundened Into a single moment. It was so with mo then. I con Id comprehend the emotion of Columbus, when be llrst beheld through the dim dawn of morning, the new-found but long-dreamed of shores of America, or the less Innocent but n.i less vivid Joy cf Cone., when be hist plumed the cross of Spain over the golden balls of Moine auma. My Orea-t tbrobiied full with emotions of delight and gladness, tha' words labor in vain toexpie.-s. A sense of ethereal lightness ran through all my veins, and I teemed io Ijc ascend ing biguer higher into realms of inexpressible bliss, with eueti pulsation of the engine. It wis a moment of triumphant joy that will never re turn again. Not a dream of failure now sha dowed my rupture. All had told us that the greatest diltlculty was to reach and take posses sion of tbe engine, and alter that success was certain. It tiotttd hare bveii, but for unforeseen con tingencies. Away wo scoured, passing Held, and vlllav.ro, and woodland. At taeh leap of the engine our hearts rose higher, mid wo talked merrily of tbe welcome that would greet us when we da-bed into iliiiiteville a lew hours later our I'diernrin.'. done, and the brightest laurels of the guerilla lar eclipsed. But the telegraph ran by our side, and was able, by the flashing ot a single lightning mcs SJge uliead, to arrest onr progress uu I dusipate ail our fonoest hopes. Then! w is h i teliur ipli u stution where we look the train, but we knew not how soon our enemies might reach one, or vt bether they nilgl.t not bae u por able battel y at com mand. To obviate all danger on tliis point, we stopped, utter t unning some four miles, to cut the wire. John Scott, an nc'ivo young man, '.'Hiu'ieil the pole, and with his hand knocked oil tliu imu'atol box lit the top, an U swung down thjiwirc. l-'or-tuuatelyl tlieio was a small saw on the engine, with which the wire was then severed. Wane this was being done, another party took up a rail, and put it into the-car to carry o.'f with us. Ttiis d d not long check our pur-uers, but wo had ihe catisluetiou of learning that it threw tlicni down au embankment, us will be minuted more fully iu a Couledeiute account inserted liereatter. When the engine lii'-t stopped, Andrews. tumped oft, elusped our hands in ecstasy, congratulating us tlmt our ditliculties were now all over; lli.t: we hud the enemy at such u disudvutitu-te Uiui be could not harm us, flna exhibited every sign ol joy. Kaidhe: "Only one more train to pas, aud th n we will put our engine to full speed, burn the bridges alter us, da-.li ilirotmh Cuntn liooga, and on to Mitchcl at liuiit.-ville." The , programme would have been filled if e had mot mill one train. We ai1(,ad of titno, and in order t ) meet the down tram just on time, we were obliged to u.p on the t.uck awhile. However, wc bad ycttornnon rrsulartime, which was, unfortu nately, very alow limo not more than twelve or nrtwn miles an hour. Yet. we could nor retreat, and bad no resource bu to prem tirtnly on. This we did, and obstrm-ted the track as well as we could, by In lug on cross. tics at dif ferent places. We also cut tliu telegraph wire between every station. Finally, when we were nearly to the station where wo expected to meet the last train, wo stopped to f nke up a rail. Wo had no instru ments for doing this, except a crow bar, and, in stead of pulling out the spikes, as we could have done wiih tbe pinch burrs used for th.it purpose by rnllroiid men. we had to b it, LIT them iint ''hie ntirl thin r.iil nt una end, ami cijylit of 119 took lio ij of Jt U try t ) mill til. With one convulsive effort we broke the rail In two. and tumbled nnll .....II over the embankment. No one wai hurt, and wc took up our precious hair rail, which insured us tin.o to pa-s the tram ahead, before our pursuers could he upon us. . we were not a moment too soon : for we n fearrely out of sight of where we ha 1 taken up uc mm iitu ut-iorc inn oilier nam met its. ' n. was mfely pti.rd : nnd when our imrsunrs ...... to Ihe place where we had broken the rad, they abandoned their own train, and run on foot tiil tliey met the one we bud just past, and turned it urn r aiier us, running witn great speed. We were now aware of our danger, nnd dor.i..1 every expedient wc could think of to delay pur suit; but as we were cutting the wire near Cal- noun, nicy came in sigtit o us. Then ens.., ..I il, most tcniblo and ihiibing chose ever known on the American continent. We instant v nut our murine to full anw.t .n.i In a moment its wheels were s'nklng lire from the tails in their rapid revolutions. The car iu which we were r. ked furiously, nnd threw ug from one side to the other like peas rattled In a gourd. Still on after us relentlessly came the pursuers. The smoke tf their engine could bo distingulshta in oVirV l,' reauii. And the screctn of their whistle sounded In our ears, around every curve. It was still necessary for us to i ut the wire, nnd, in older to gain timo for that, we dropped a ear on tho track, and, soon after, another. This left us with only the loco motive tender and ono bnggaro car. Each timo whin we stopped to cut the wire, wc would try to take up another rail ; but before we could loosen its fiiftenings with our Imperfect tools, the ap proach of our enemies would compel us to hasten on. The thought of a new expedient crossed my mind, which saved me for some lime longer. It was to knock out the end of onr car, and drop tho rails on the track as we run. Moon alter, In ono of our necessary stoppages to take care of the telegraph, we loaded on some cross ties, which we threw out in tbo same manner. One rail 1 re served fora particular purpose. When we stopped again, I took it, placed one end under the track, and Jet the other project upward, joiuliugtowards tho advancing truin. It was very nearly ollec ttial. The engineer of the train In pursuit, who afterwards visited us in prison, said that if it hud been only otic Inch higher, nothing could have saved C"'r lr,l'n ,r0' Wreck, because, being so dark and finall, It waa not noticed till too late to StOP. ttowevei, iv n ittbio v hj low to book m tU bttIS f 'hB C0W'"Ii''i as 1 in tended. Our enemies pursued us with great determina tion. One man rode on the cow-catcher, and, springing off, would throw the obstructions from the track, and jump on again while they had merely checked tho engine. So great was our velocity, that most of tho ties wo threw out bounced off the truck; but the few that remained enabled ns several times to get out of sight of them. When this was tho case wo would stop, and again try to tnkc up a rail, which would have given as leisurefor the greater operation of burn lng a bridgo. By this time We had a few more Instruments, which Andrews and Wilson had simultaneously procured from a switch-tender. We worked faithfully, but each time, before we bad loosened a rail, the inexorable pursuers wercaguin visible, 1 then propdsed to Andrews a plan that afforded a hope or fund escaie. It was to let our engineer take our engine out of sight, while we hid on a curve, after putting a tie on the truck, and waited for the pursuing train to come up: thun, when ihey cheeked to remove the obstriictinn.wu could rush on them, shoot every person on the engine, reverse It, and let it drive ut will back, as it came. It would huvc chased all the trains following, of which there were now two or three, ba-rk befoivit, and thus have stopped tliu whoio pursuit for a time. This would liavo required quick work, and been somewhat dangerous, as the trains wt re now loaded with soldiers; but it afforded a chance of success. Andrews said it w as a go id plan, looked around, and then hurried to the en gine, nnd I had no further opportunity of dis cusiing the subject. After we were in prison, he said lie was very sorry that we had not made the tilort. All this time wc were rushing through towns and villuges at terrific speed, home passengers came down when they heard our whistle, to go aboard, but tbey all shrank back am.i.ed when tbey saw us pas with the noise of thunder and the speed of lightning. Still more were they astonished when they saw three other trains dashing by in close pursuit, and loaded with ex cited soldiers. Thus the break-neck eliusu con tinued through Dultnn, Ringgold, and the other smull towns on tbe route. But it soon liecauie evident th it it could not continue much longer. We h id taken on wood and water before we were so c!ooly pressed, but now our supply was nearly exhausted, aud our pursuers were too close behind to permit us to replenish it. lloi before yielding wu resolved to tiy one more expedient. Tor ilr.s purpose we broke open tho forward end of the only box enrwe bad left, anil with the fragments emleavoied to kindle a lire In it. Had we succeeded we would have detached it, left it burning on a bridge, ami run on with the locomotive alone. But ihe tuel ot the latter was too neurly got e to allord us kindling wood, aud the dialt tluough the cur, caused by our rapid motion. 1.1. w our mucins out. At length wu succeeded In kindling a small lire, but the driz zling rain, which hud been falling nil morning, was blown upon it, and prevented it from hurri ing r.ipidty enough to be of any service. Thus our lust hope expired, and our magntli ccnt scheme, on which we bad so long thought and toiled, was a failure. Hut one iliin i more now remained to save ourselves, il possinle. We wire within, perhaps, lilteeu miles of Chat tanooga when we lesolved to a .audoii the en gine. Having made 'Ins resolve, we did not cut the telegraph wire, and then, for the tirst time, tiny succeeded iu sending a message uhcid of ns. This was no serious detriment to us, but It rubed the wilde.t excitement in ( b iit.inoog.i. TI.e worn, n and cbiloreu instantly lied from the town, anil Souclil safety in ihe :iods and moun tains'. The wt ole military for e, win h was ciicuiii.iil n.nr the pi.ue, came out ami selected un i.dvnnl.ieeoiis position to meet us. I Here they planted million, felled trees across the track, tore up the rails lor some distance, an I waited for our approach. 1 heir orders were for them to make u gi netul inassaeie not to spare a single man. But we ettine no', uud, therefore, they hud no opportunity to display their latent cruelty. It was at this point, when he saw every scheme we attempted to execute completely foiled, that Andrew.-.' presence of mind, tor u time, seemed to desert htm. It w'as only lii'.ccu miles across the country to the Tennessee river, uud we could have reached it ahead of any o)isisitiou, bad we all stuck together. One m an Icid a compass, uud with that, mid Andrews' knowledge of the coun try, we could have gained and crossed the Ten nessee, uud struck into the moiiul.iins bevuud. be lore the country could hive been t.rmsed. Once there, in those int. r. ..in .Me forests, it would have been ulmost impossible for them to capture us, well armed in we were, before wc could have reached the shelter of our army. Il.it this was not doi.u, and this hc-t chance ol u.c.ipo was lost. The locomotive was run on till the wood and witter w ere completely exhausted, und tliu pttr bucrs plainly ill view. Then Andrews gave tho oilier lor ne to leave tho trii'ti, di-p. rse, and for every man to save himself, if he could. We ol ejed, jumping oil' the. train whilst still in in. ition, und were soon making the best of our way tluough the tangled pines of (ieorgi.i. From these pines most of the adventurers were ut hist forced by hunger, and w ere piciied up by the K. bel cavalry which s. oiired the country. The Southern papers ut the time wero filled with eiibtii,i',u accounts of tho exploit, and the priacim-B were fortunate in escapin0' wiili their lives. f whut tru,l I., A j. m-nr. ii t;iiiii'.tcr ut tt wcM.ijg f 3??!U! 11 UN TV O II I H It I !
