LONDON, January 23.
. Admiralty Office, yaiu 21.
Copy of a letter from Admiral Sir Hyde
Parker, Knt. Commander in Chi?f of
his Majesty's (h ps and vessels at Jamaica,
to Evan Ncpean, Esq. dated at Port
Royal Harbour, the 4th of Nov. 1799.
Sift,
I Have a peculiar fatitfa&ion in commu
nicating te you, for the information of my
Lords v'ommiffioners 0/ the .-\dmiralty,
that liia Majefly'i late (hip Hermione i« a
gain restored to his navy, by as daring and
gallant an enterprise a* is to be found in our
Laval annals, Under the command of capt.
Hamilton himfelf, with the beats of, the
Surprifi only..
Captain Hamilton's own letter, niththr
reports acaompanyiiig it (copies of which
are enclofcd,) will fuffic ntly explain to
their Lordfhip# the detail of this service,
and the bravery with which the attack was
supported, ai)d leaves me only nne obferva
tioi. to make os the very gallant asSiun,
which adds iifin te honour to captain Ha
milton as an officer, for his conception of
the fcr.iee he was about to undertake
TAis was, Sir, his disposition for the at
tack ; which was that a number ®f chosen
men, to the amouut of fifty, with himelf,
should board, and the remainder in the boats
to cut the ca Jes and take the (hip in tow.
From this manoeuvre he had formed the
idea, that whije lie was difp»ting for the
pofTe'Tion of the fhtp, (he was ppr»aching
the Surprise, who was laying rlofe into the
harooar. and in cafe of beir g beat out ot
the H-rrrntone, he would have an opportu
nity of taking up the contest upon more
favourable terms.
To the steady execution 'f these orders
was owing the fucceU of this bold and da
ring undertaking, which mnflevt r have rank
among the foremoft of the many gallant ac
tions executed by nur navy this war.
I find the Hermione has had a thorough
repnir, and is in complete or !er ; I have
tberefoie ordered her to be furvfeyed and
valued, and (hall commiffio-n her as soon
as the reports ate made to me from the offi
cer* of the yard, by the name of the Re-
taliation,
I have the honeur to be, &c. &c
• H. PARKER.
Supprize* Po*t Poy*l Harbour, ;
Nov. I. 1799. I
Sir,
The honour of my country and the glory
of the British navy were ftronsf inducements
for me to make an attempt to cut out, by
the boat! ofhis majesty's ship under my com
mand, bis Majesty's late ship Htrmione,
from the h?rb"ur of Porto ■ avallo. where
there are about 200 pieces of cannon mount
ed on the batteries.
Having well observed her situation on the
22d and 2jd ult. and the evening of the
24th being favourable, I turned the hands
up to acquaint the officers and (h p's com
pany of my int-ntions to lead them to the
attack, which was handsomely returned with
th ee cheers, and that they would all sol- ;
low to a man ; this greatly increased my
heipes. and I ha : little doubts of succeed
injr: the boats, containing one hundred
men, including office 1, at ha'.f pad 12 on
the m»rning of the 25th (after having
the launch of the (hip, which rarried a
twenty-four pounder, and 20 men, and re
ceivii g several guns and small arms from the
f: i^-ate,) boarded ; the forecaftle was taken
pofieffion of without much resistance ; the
the quarter deck disputed the point a quar
ter of an hour, whrre a dreadful carnage
took place ; the mrin deck held out much
longer, and with equal (laughter; nor was
it before koth cables were cut, fail made
on the Ship, and boats ahead to tow, tl,at
the nvin deck could be called ours ; they
last of all retreated to the 'tween decks and
continued firing till their ammunition was
expended j then, and not until then, did
they ery for quarters. At two o'clock the
Hermione was completely ours, being out
of gun (hot from the Fort, which had for
f«roe time kept up 3 tolerable good fire.
From the Captain Don Romond de Chalas,
I am informed (he w;ls nearly ready for sea,
mevdnting 44 guns, w th a (hip's Company
of three hundred and tweity onej Offieers
and Sailers, fifty-fix Soldiers, and fifteen
.Artillery Men on board.
Every Officer atid man on this Expedi
tion behaved with an uncommon degree of
valour and exertion ; but I coufider it par
ticularly my duty to mention the very gal
lant cbnduft, as well'as the aid and afliftance
at a particular cri'fis, I received from Mr.
Jokn M'Mullen, Surgeon and Volunteer,
aod Mr. Maxwell, Gunner, even after the
latter was dangeruufly wounded.
As the Frigate was the particular objt A
of your order of the 17th September, I have
thought proper to return into Port with
her. Enclosed I transmit you a lift of cap
tures during the Cruize, also two litis of
killed and wounded.
I have the Honour to be, &c. &c.
