7rial of Theobald Wolfe Tout,
The Trial of T. W. Tone by a Court
Martial at the Barrack, of which general
Lofut was President, is concluded.
Tone being asked, whether he was guil
ty or not of the charge of having as a falfe'
Traitor enteied into the Seitice of the Ene
my, and appeared in Arms against his Sove
reign ? replied, That he would give the
Court no trouble—That he fully admitted
the charge.
He then read a kind of Defence, in do
ing which he was at three different inflam
matory passage flopped by the Court, and
fnffered to erase the obnoxious parts out of
the Paper.
The general tendency of this paper ' wa»
that he confeffed having tnterei into the
French fervice(and he produced bis comisif
fton of Chief de Brigade) ; that he had em
barked in the great dehgn of raising three
millions of hit own fellow fubjefts from a
(late of bondage ; that he had made the
fame attempt in which Walhingtoa had foe
ceeded, and Kofciulko had failed ; to the
Catholics of Ireland he acknowledged his
obligations ;he had engaged fiacerely in
their fervicc, and had been amply remunera
ted ; the connection of lieland with Great
Britain hp had ever considered as her bane,
and he had a fled under that coavidion to
rescue hit country ; success he could not
command, and he was prepared to meet hit
fate.
A» a soldier, however, he wi/hed to die
like a soldier ; he wished as an emigrant ta
ken in arms, to be treated as the French
had treated tbe Count de Sombitieul, and to
be (hot; the sooner his fete was to take
place, the better ; he wished it might be
within an hotir.
He was then remanded to prifoK, anil
the Court proceeded to discuss the sentence,
which was sent to the Lord Lieutenant for
his approbation, and has not yet trSnfpired.
