Your spicy Journal is a weekly visitor
and is read with deep interest. We
have been thinking that news from
this part of the South would perhaps
be interesting to your readers, and es
pecially more so when some will learn
that D.A. Musser,Esq.,fiom your town
and known almost by every citizen of
your county has spent several davs
with us and helped us to masticate
some of our cornbread and Hoe cake
and who will no doubt corroborate
what we say, unless we get excited ere
we are done and make visionary as
sertions. But we will try and illus
trate faiutly to your readers reality,
facts and figures in painting the cli
mate, chances, fortunes, agricultural
products, vast timber forests, and im
mense mineral deposits.
THE CLIMATE
is far superior to that of Pennsylvania.
The winters are mild and short, the
coldest weather being about like March
weather iu the Keystone state. Stormy
and blustery March here is like May in
Pennsylvania. We have to-day peach
and wild plum blossoms. Need no
fires and are making gardens. The
summers are not any warmer than in
Pennsylvania, while the nights are
much cooler aud we can sleep well.
We have fine and beautiful weather un
til the first of December ; very little
snow, sleds and sleighs are unknown
here. Thus the climate with short and
mild winters is more healthy than in the
North where the winters are long and
severe. Again this country abounds
with mineral springs containing medi
cal properties, placed here by provi
dence for the healing of the nations.
These springs, we know, have virtue in
them. Any one coming here need fear
no climatic changes,if any it will be for
the better.
CHANCES FOR FORTUNES.
Well we have promised in the first
part of our letter to tell something
about chances and fortunes. Of course
this is what we all are looking and
working for, and we want to consider
this part of our letter more carefully
than any other part of it. We would
not haye your readers understand that
all that is necessary is to come here with
a ecoop and sack and go to scooping
and in a few days amass a fortune.
Oh, no ; not so fast as this ; but we
will say that there are fifty chances for
every man that comes here, while in
Pennsylvania there are fifty men
watching and waiting for one chance to
bobb up. Busiuess in all its branches
is not overdone, neither is there as
much competition, nor the large
amount of capital to butt aganst. With
a capital of SIOOO or S2OOO a man can
make as much profit in one year in the
mercantile business than is made with
SIO,OOO in most places in Pennsylvania.
And so it is in all branches of business.
But this is not where the fortunes are
made and will be made here. There
are thousands of acres of mineral lands
that can as yet be bought cheap and
which are sure to yield fortunes to those
who are fortunate enough to buy in
time. We will mention one tract
which will give the readers some idea
of what a fortune is. There is a tract
of 200 acres holding four veins, one
vein is 10 feet thick, while the others
are about 3to 4 feet. The length is
about one half mile, and can be mined
18U0 feet deep. Two tons to the cubic
yard, worth $33 per ton. Let some
one make the Valculation. This tract
can be bought fr S4OOO cash. Deduct
S4OOO from 75 or 80 million dollars and
see what the fortune will be. So there
is, as we said, thousands of acres as
valuable as this tract. Who wants to
make millions ? Here are chances to
make them. We will now drop this
subject lest some one will say we are
excited or visionary. If so, we say
•come and see.
The agricultural products are chiefly
corn and tobacco. Tobacco is hauled
15 to 40 miles through muddy roads to
market. Flour, meal and bacon is
bought for the money realized from the
sale of the tobacco. Why not raise
this at home and save the profits made
by the buyers and sellers.
YABT TIMBER FO REST.
There are yet millions of aeres of or
iginal growth in the South, which can
be bought for $5 to $lO per acre, mostly
timberland with yellow pine of the best
kind and white oak. This timber will
come into market in a few years and
fortunes will be made out of it.
MINERALS.
It has been said that in North Caro
lina every kind of minerals found in the
known world has been discovered.
Whether this be true or not we cannot
say, but gold and copper there are bill
ions of tons of the richest kind.
TRACES OF WAR
may ho found all over the South, Fully
one-third of ttie men who were in the
field are wounded and broken down in
health, and many who wero wealthy
are to day poverty stricken, and work
by the day in the fields, while gray
hairs and old age tell the sad tale that
their days are numbered. During our
travels in the South we hnye visited
the battlefields of the Wilderness, Cedar
Creek, Winchester and Fredricksburg.
While standing among the graves of
the Federal and Confederate soldiers
we could hut weep and breathe a silent
prayer that
No more shall the war cry sever.
Or the winding rivers he red.
Our anger is banished forever.
When laureled the graves of our dead.
Under the sod and the dew,
Waiting the Judgement day.
Love aim tears for the blue.
Tears and love tor the gray.
We have one thought for soldiers
Living and dead;
Cheeis for the living.
And tears tor the dead.
