Some Pinkerton Stories. ■ One cf the Great Detectives Tells of Their Exploits. "I don't know of anything further to say just now than that we haye always done the business of the Adams express company since 1859, and we are espec ially pround of this case. We com menced with the $50,000 robbery, com mitted by Nathan Maroney at Mont gomery, Alabama, which was 'done' by my father and George IT. Bangs, late superintendent of the agency, now dead. At that time the agency was unknown outside of Chicago. Mr. E. S. Sanford, then the president of the Adams express company, counseled with Robert Boyer, a New York detec tive of that day, regarding tho heavy robbery at Montgomery, and Boyer said that ho only knew of one man in the country—a detective who had the pluck and resources to stick to the mat ter and follow it up to a successful con clusion; and that was a Scotchman who lived in Chicago named Allan Pinker ton. Sanford hooted at the idea of go ing to a western village to find a detec tive ; but on Boyer persisting, Sanford sent for Piukerton to come to New York. Tiie case was placed in his hands and after seven months of hard work $49,000 of the money was recover ed at Jenkintown,a suburb of Philadel phia, in the original package it was stolen, aud Maroney, who had been the agent of the company, was sent to the psnitentiary for ten years. A very elaborate receipt for this work now hmgs in our otlice in this city. The next Adams express robbery was in 1863 on the Philadelphia, Wilming ton and Baltimore road, .in which $89,- 000 was stolen. Under our direction all the thieves were arrested and con yicted. The next was a $600,000 rob bery on January 6, 1566, stolen from the Adams express messenger on the New York and New Haven road at Co scou, Conn. The money was all recov ered by us and tho robbers imprisoned for long terms. "The fact is," said Mr. Pinkerton, "we haye never lost a case for the Ad ams express company in thirty* years. "Whenever a robbery occurs on their lin33 they give the Pinkertons carte blanche to get the robbers first and the mjcey afterward. The motto of the Adams people is never to compromise pr. compound with thieyes ; and they will wllowa thief to tiie pndj of the world who depredates on their property. At one stage of the present case we were led to suppose that Wittrock had escaped to Australia, and 1 was arrang iug to start there for him." The Treatment for a Cold. The Monthly Magazine [London] reports Dr. Graham as saying that it is not a correct practice, after a cold is caught, to make the room a person sits in much warmer than usual, to increase the quantity of bed clothes, wrap up in flannel, and drink a large quantity of hot tea, gruel or other slops, because it will invariably in crease the feverisbness, ahd in the ma jority of instances, prolong rather than lessen the duration of the cold. It is well-known that confining inoculated persons in warm rooms will make their small-pox more violent by aug menting the general heat and fever ; and it is for the same reason that a similar practice in the present com plaint is attended with anologous re sults, a cold being in reality a slight fever. In some parts of England, a mong the lower order'of the people, a large glass of cold spring water, taken on going to bed, is found to be a suc cessful remedy, and in fact many med ical practitioners recommend a re] lue _ el atmosphere and frequent draughts of cold fluid as the most cOjCskrous remedy tor a recent col'j, particularly when the patient's 'uabit is £ull and plethoric.
