Mountain Sam's Dogs. An old trapper and hunter, known as "Mountain Sam," is doing a land office business killing huge mountain sheep for their heads and horns. These be ships to New York to fill orders which te is constantly receiving, and there they are mounted. Sam's best customers are wealthy Englishmen. For many years ''Mountain Sam" has buried himself in the most remote re cesses of the Big Horn mountains Sam rounds up the wild sheep with dogs. His pack number twenty-five head, and they are a pure cross of the blood hound and bulldog. Mountain born and bred, these noble animals add to the strength and sagacity of their blood-strains a marvelous endurance and activity. No snow depth, no roughness of trail, no steepness of precipice, no loftiness of peak, no re moteness of locality can stop the mountain dog when on the track of the mountain sheep. The pack works in an organized way when the track of a band of sheep is struck. The dogs break into little bunches, and wide and careful circuits are made. The closely pressed sheep are hurried to ward a common centre, and they will soon be bunched with twenty-five staunch dogs, crests erect and tails wagging, moving about them in an endless and eager circle. The pack has been known to bunch two hundred and fifty herd of sheep, and to hold their watch and guard for over six hours awaiting the coming of their master, who has been kept back by the difficulties lying in his path. It sometimes occurs that the dogs bring the game together on a spot that is utterly inaccessible to human feet. Then the hunter gives his dogs notice of the fact by a peculiarly shrill and piercing shout. The pack at once dash into the midst of the sheep, seize and slay the largest, and by dint of rolling, tumbling frcm crag to crag, from declivity to declivity, bring the carcasses within reach of their master. He Had to Give it Up. Patiently she sat and waited for his footfall. His footfall was busy filling engagements at other points. A tear trickled from her eye and burst into countless sparkling atoms, as it fell on the mantle which hung gracefully from her shoulders. The gaslignt flickered dismally in the dim hall. She let it flicker and heeded lit not. The police man's club struck the curbstone on the next block with a hollow sound, and she started in terror. What if—oh, sickening thought I But no—George was always fly enough to take a cab af ter he had flnished going out with the ooys. At last he came. "Where haye you been so long, George ?" she asked. He scarcely seemed to hear her. For seyeral minutes he stood motion less, but his face wore a troubled expression. At length he spoke these words : "My—hie—dear,l hash ter giye it up.
