Three More Than Pour. In many southern states the negro farm-hands work on what is known as the share system. The landowner furnishes the land, mules, and farm implements and advances the supplies. At the end of the crop season the la borer usually gets one-third of the product, corn, cotton, etc. A farmer in Sunflower county, Mississippi in re contracting the first of the present year with his laborers for tho year ISBi>, found several of them who were unwill ing to remain with him fin - one-third of what they produced. 'How much more do you want ?' inquired the farmer. *We wants a for f ; dat's what Mr. Mitchell's gwine to gib lies ban's dis yeah.' The farmer laughed, and, calling to his wife, asked her to bring out a coup le of apple pies she had just baked, and when tlie pies were produced he cut • one of them into three equal parts and the other into four and invited the darkies to help themselves, each to a piece. It is needless to say that the pie that had been cut in three pieces was the first one attacked. 'Now,' said the farmer, pointing to the thirds, That is what I proprose to give you, aad that,' pointing to the fourths, 'is what you say Mr. is going to give you ; which had you rather have ?' The daikies opened their eyes and stared at one another, when the spoke:- man exclaimed : 'We.I ! dat pie bus ines do prove dac a free is bigger'n a fob Wlmr dat contract Marse Bob ?' The contract was produced and the last one of them signed it . Detroit Free Press. — Equal to tho Emergenoy. I was going along the roadway out en Dorchester avenue the other day, at a place where an orchard adjoins a grove, and I happened to see a police man peering warily into the trees. 'What is it V said I. 'Look in there behind that wall,' said he. I did,, and there was a boy about twelve years old, barefooted, with a" turf of hair sticking out through a hole in his hat, pegging stones into a pear tree end knocking down pears. The policeman worked his way in through the trees and jumped on the boy before he saw either one of us. 'Aha !' said the policeman ; 'l've caught you at it !' 'Caught me at what?' said the boy. 'Stealing pears.' 'Ste—steal —stealia' pears V said the boy, in great astonishment. '1 hain't been stealin' 110 pears !' •Hain't, eh ? Then what are you doing with these here in your pock ets V The boy's trouserpockets were stuff ed out on both sides with pears. 'Oh, these,' said he ; why, I found Yin layin' 'round here on the ground, and I was firin' 'em back on the tree where they belonged !'— Host on Hoc. ord.
