His Breath Caught Firo. Dr. George T. Beatson thus writes in the British Medical Journal: I have thought it right, to put on record the following case, as it seems to me to be one of some rarity and to have some importance from a medico-legal point of view, I cannot do better than give the facts in the words of the patient himself, who communicated them to ma by letter. Tie writes as as follows .* "A rather strange thincr happened to myself about a week ago. For a month or so I was troubled very much with foul eructations. I had no pain, but the smell of the gas which came from my stomach was disagreeable to myself and to all who happened to be in the room., About a week ago, as 1 said, I got up in the morning and lighted a match to see lhe time, and when 1 put the match near my mouth to blow it out my breath caught lire and gave a loud crack like the report of a pistol. It burnt my lips and they are still a little sore. I got a terrible surprise, and so did my wife, for the report awakenei her." From the above occurrence it would appear that the conditions known as "halitosis," or diseased breath, is not only a source of misery to the sufferer and those compelled to associate with him, hut may, under certain circum stances, become a condition of danger to the unfortunate possessor of it. In the present instance tho gaseous results of the imperfect'y digested food had their atoms of carbon and hydrogen so arranged as to give rise to the presence of carbureted hydrogen, the inflamma ble and explosive qualities of which came into play when mixed with a due proportion of atmospheric air in pres ence of the ungarded light of the burn ing match. 1 may add that the patient to whom this accident happened is a most intelligent aiul observant man,; n 1 that the diet 1 perscribed for the indi gestion from whieh he suffers from time to tuna has alcohol excluded from it, and I know tnat my instrn ctions in that respect are acted upon. One Good Deed Begets Another. A friend related an incident to me to day about Mr. James W. Scoville, of Oak Paik, which will he of interest to the people who assembled the other at teinoon to witness tiie laying'of the corner-stone of the Scoville institute in that charming suburb. The great dis tinction between different philanthro pists is that some of them give their money in their lifetime and others give it after they are dead and have no use for it themselves. Mr. Peabody, of blessed memory, was moved to make his princely benefactions by reading on a tombstone in London of a man who had bestowed large sums of money "in bis lifetime," and Mr. Scoville was similarly affected by an incident that befell him in the Cooper institute in New York. "While he was in the office of the institute a clerk came in with a plumber's bill which he had gone out to pay, and informed the officers that the plumber refused to take any pay for his work. When asked for an explana tioc he said that he was a prosperous man and that he owed it all to Peter Cooper. When he was a hopeless, pen nile.-s ltd on the streets of New York lie had beer, taken up aml.-given an ed ucation at the Cooper institute, and he could never charge Mr. Cooper for any thing. Mr. Scoville was at once pene tratcd wilh the idea that the greatest happiness tint any human being can feel was to do good in his lifelime, and live to see the effect of it and to enjoy the gratitude of his beneficiaries.
