A Yankee Trick. A six-foot Yankee, seated upon a load of brooms, drove his team up be fore the (toor of an establishment, where he expected to find a purchaser. Jumping from his seat he entered the store and the following colfbquy took place : Yankee—'Can't I sell you a load of brooms to-day, mister ¥' Dealer—'No, don't want any.'* Yankee—'Better take 'em -sell 'em dog cheap.' •Dealer—'Don't want 'em ; got e nough brooms. Yankee—'l'll tell you what I'll do. If you'll take the lot, I'll lot 'em go for a djllar a dozen ; you know they're worth double that.' Tbe dealer stroked his chin for a mo ment as if in deep thought and then re plied : 'Well,l don't want any brooms as I told you, but I don't mind making a trade with you.' Yankee—'What sort of a trade ?' Dealer—'Well I'll take your whole load at a dollar a dozen, and pay you one half cash, you take the other half in trade.' Yaukee—'No you don't mister ! You'll charge me such an pll fired prof it on the other half that I might come out at the little end of the horn.' Dealer—'Oh, no, I promise you that you shall have the goods at just what they cost me. 1 Yaukee—'Wall, mister, that's what I call squar' dealin'. It's a bargain.' And be commenced to unload the brooms in a pile on the sidewalk. When he got through he walked iLto the store. 'There you are, mister ; fourteen dizan, which I calculate makes just $7 comin' to me.' Dealer—'Yes, that's right ; there's the money. Now what goods do you want for ihe othei $7 !' Yankee—'Wall, I dunno—You see, mister, I hain't much posted in your other truck, so I guess I'll take brooms 1' Mrs. Cleveland in Church. 'WhenMrs.Cleveland goes to church,' says a Washington letter to the Mem phis Avalanche , as soon as she enters the pew and takes a seat, she drops her pretty head upon her daintily gloyed hand and devotes a moment to silent prayer. Then she settles herself for a quiet attention upon the service. She knows, of course, that she is the target of every eye in the church, and, though she tries to ccnceal her embarrassment, she is not able to do so entirely. When the pastor gives out the hymn she is glad to turn her attention to the hymn book and forget the uncomfortable let-ling which is the natural result of being stared at. Wlun the minister leads in prayer her head is bowed, and it drops a little lower when he prays for 'the chief magistrate of the nation' and adds a petition for 'those that are dear to him.' She does not fidget about and lean up in the corner and rest her head upon her hand as G rover does, but sits straight and quiet, listening to the sermon from beginning to end. Of course she fans herself constantly, for she would not be a woman if she did not. When the basket goes around, she drops her contribution modestly into it, and when the closing hymn is given out, fir.ds not only the hymn but the doxology corresponding in metre with it, and follows them closely to the end. When the services end, every neck is craned to get a look at her face and figure. She tries to appear unconcern ed, 1 ows to the church people near her whom she knows, talks a little to those nearest her, and is evidently relieved when the carriage door bangs and she is hidden from view of the crowd that was gathered on the sidewalk to see her pass from the church door to the car riage. Throughout, her conduct is full of dignity and gentle grace.' LADIES WANTED.
