Har rison, No. 422 Pi'.e street, this city, was Dearly smothered to death this morning. Tho young man retired as usual last evening, but failed to come down stairs as lie was called repeatedly. This proved unavailing, and a member of t-he family went to his room and found his head accidentally enveloped in a pillow-slip. ELIZABETIITOWN, Pa..July 22.— The frame house of Rudolph Roat, at Cone wago station, two miles west of here, where the Colebrook Valley Railroad connects with the Pennsylvania, took fire last night from a defective flue. Before it was discovered the building was in flames, and it was impossible to save it or to rescue all the inmates. Two of Mr. Boat's children, aged 0 and 7 respectively, were burned to death ; the building was entirely destroyed. Mrs. Roat was awakened at about 9 o'clock by the light shining in her face, and she at ODce awoke her husband. The woman grasped her infant from its crib and jumped from the window. The oldest daughter was awakened by tb9 beat and going to another bed, where a little sister and a brflther were sleeping, tried to arouse them, hot was horrified to find them dead, having been suffocated by smoke. She then jumped from the window to save her life. The father tried hard to rescue the two children, but was driven back by the smoke and heat, and to save his own life he left the burning building. The house was one and one half stories Inch, built of logs and weather-boarded, and was burned to the ground in a very short time. The mother is al most prostrated with grief, and it is feared she will become deranged. The father is also grieved at the loss of his two children. The mother, father and two children escaped in an almost nak ed condition, as all clothing was burn ed. They were taken to the residence of Mr. Krauser, manager of the Grubb estate, at which place Mr. Roat was employed, and were given clothing.
