|lu Joupal. THURSDAY, APRIL 22ND, 1886. Published by R* A. BUMILLER. GOVERNOR PATTISON, after having finished his thorongh investigation of the Soldiers' Orphans' Schools, pro ceeds to do some wholesome turning out of rascally officials. Rev. J. W. Sayers, Male Inspector, and Mrs. E lizabeth W. Hunter, Female Assistant Inspector, have been summarily eject ed from office, and General Wagner is made inspector of the schools. That gentleman in his letter of acceptance to the governor wishes it to be under stood the he will not take any salary for services rendered, but that the a mount of his pay shall go back to the state treasury. This is surely a rare exhibition of unselfishness and stands in strong contrast to the greed and dis honesty ot a syndicate that filled their pockets at the expense of the state, and the poor neglected orphans. Further on, Rev. E. E. Higbee, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, has been asked to resign as superin tendent of the Orphans' schools. At this writing he has not done so yet, but it is certainly the best and most advisable course for him to pursue un der the circumstances. But the Governor does not stop here, but in his communication to Attor ney-General Cassidy, in which he sums up all the abuses and irregulari ties existing in the schools, he in structs that gentleman to proceed a gainst the offenders civilly and crimin ally and requests him not to let a stone unturned to bring the guilty parties to justice. Such is the manner iu which our determined and energetic executive proposes to rectify the wrong committed in said institutions and his good work has the full appro val of every true Pennsylvanian. Ev ery man with humane feelings and a sense of fairness will favor the sifting of this disgraceful affair until every of fensive particle is removed and the schools are again in a creditable con dition. THI CAMPAIGN is drawing nigh and as a natural consequence aspiring can didates are heard from. Among the few county offices to be filled this fall is the office of District Attorney. We have for some time been aware of the intention of our esteemed friend, Mr. J. Calyin Meyer, to become a candi date for that office, but were cot au thorized to make a public announce ment of the fact until of late. Mr. Meyer is well and favorably known to nearly ail our renders, being a son of Hon. J. G. Meyer, of Aaronsburg, which town he is proud to call his home. It seems therefor but natural for us to make the first mention of bis candidacy and we do it cheerfully. Several years ago he entered Adam Hoy's law-office in Bellefonte, and by close application and bard study has arrived at a point where be caD see success ahead, and now figures as one of Centre county's rising young law yers. He is of sterling character, nat tuarl ability end genial disposition and is in every way fitted for the of fice and worthy of support It maj also be said that he is a genuine dem ocrat and was an active worker in his party ever since he cast his first bal lot In due time Mr. Meyer's formal card as a candidate will appear in the JOUBNAL and in the meanwhile we submit this short and well-deserved encomium to our readers with the hope that they will give bis candidacy favorably consideration. THE Republican State Committee met on Wednesday afternoon, April 14tb, at Harrisbnrg, with Senator Cooper in the chair in order to fix a day and place for holding the next Republican state convention The chairmen from the different counties gave glowing reports of the condition of the party within their respective districts and all were full of hope, promising large majorities for Beaver, which would seem to leave no chance at all tor the Democrats. But our time has not come yet. The assem bly completed its work by deciding to hold the state convention at Harris burg, June 30. THE latest piece of news, fresh from the press, and wLich shakes the politi cal and social circles of the national capital at present, is, that President Cleveland is engaged tc be married to a Miss Folsom, the event to take place some time in June. If Grover Cleveland makes as good a husband as be is a president the prospective bride has all reason to be happy. THE sad accounts of the Western cyclones are not very encouraging news to emigrants about ready to start for those parts of the country. To Investigate Mr. Gould. WASHINGTON, April 15.— The Speak er to-day appointed the following com mittee to investigate the causes and ex tent of the labor troubles in the West: Messrs. Curtin, of Pennsylvania ; Grain, of Texas; Outwaite, of Ohio; Stewart, of Vermoht; Parker, of New York, and Buchanan, of New Jersey, State Teachers. The Penuaylvania State Teacher's Association will meet in Allentown, July 6, 7 and 8. The following topics have been selected for discussion : De fects in our School .Laws. Some phase of the Normal School Question. The Relation of Colleges and Public Schools. The Study of Birds. Primary Work, What can Supplant the County Insti tute ? ■ —— During Tuesday's thunder storm an eight-year-old girl was killed by light ning in the schoolroom at FreeJand.Pa. Another death, caused by lightning the same afternoon, occurred at Shenan doah, the victim being a boy named James Manley, who was at work ou a dirt bank near one of the collieries. AN AUSTRIAN TOWN SWEPT BY FIRE. A Hundred People Killed in One Street and Hundreds of Others Missing. VIENNA, April 18.—The town of Stry, in Galicia, has been almost com pletely destroyed by fire. The numlxr of houses burned is about six hundred. The inhabitants are destitute. A high wind was blowing and the fire started In several parts of the town at about the same time. Many inhabi tants were killed by falling walls and steeples. One hundred persons were killed in one street. The Town Hall, railway station and the telegraph office were destroyed. A large number of wounded were extricated from the ruins and were seut to Lem berg, forty two miles distant, where the hospitals are crowded with the sufferers. Hun dreds of persons are missing. Lack of water rendered aid by the military futile. Money and food are being collected in the surrounding towns for the relief of the sufferers. Uy clones of Death. ST. CLOUD, Minn., April 15—The wreck by the cyclone here and at Sauk Rapids, of which only merger particu lars could be learned last night, is com plete. The scene here is ghastly in the extreme. After darkness came on last night the rain poured down in torrents on the ruins. The skies hung low with black clouds, l'eals of thunder shook the air, and the lightning made livid rifls in the great black pall of darkness. Unmindful of all this, hundreds of men carrying lanterns, and many wailing women wandered through the frightful wreck, groping in the gutters and tur bid streams tor bodies of friends. In side the engine house IS lifeless Innlies lay on the floor in two rows, draped in sheets and blankets, while around and among them moved men with lanterns, uncovering faces trying to recognize in in the distorted features some familiar lines in which they might trace rela tionship. The bodies presented a terri ble spectable. It is estimated that 400 structures were blown down, all of fiame and none costly. In the Catholic Hospital there are about 40 wounded, but only 5 or 6 of them are considered to be in a (dan gerous condition. Many of the survi vors will be disabled for life. At Sauk Rapids similar scenes of misery and desolation were presented. So far twenty-two dead bodies have been discovered there, and there are a great many injured. The toial loss at both places will exceed half a million dollars. Towns in lowa, and Missouri were also struck by the cyclone, completely wrecking some of them ami killing and injuring quite a number of people.
