—A Newspaper subscriber lemarkea
that he found it much cheaper to pay
for his paper in advance than at the
end of the year. In answer to a query,
be gave as a reason that when paid in
advance he was getting something new
for his money, but to do so at the end
of the year was like paying for worn
out clothes—there was none of the
pleasure of anticipation in the trans
action. That man was something of a

AN ORNAMENT TO TOWN. The
iron fence which adorns the front of
the prospective Fairyiew Cemetery in
the western part of Main stieet is a
substantial as well as ornamental im
provement. The arched gateway,bear
ing the name of the cemetery in large
letters presents a fine appearance and
altogether the aff iir is a credit to town.
Millheim has made wonderful progres

public accommodations av*e concerned.
It has a fire apparatus, a town clock,
a new cemetery and telephonic connec

Enterprise and push truly are two pow

—On Tuesday the telephone wire
was broken somewhere between this
place and Coburn, but it was very soon
mended again by Mr. Kreamer, the R.
R. agent, and in the evening its powers
were tested by our band. Tho boys
were out serenading, when a message
came from Coburn that they would
like to share some of the tine music.
The band played several pieces in Mas
ser & Smith's store, the telephone of
fice, and the Coburnites being congre
gated in the ticket office had the pleas
ure of distinctly healing every note,
even at a distance of six feet from the
instrument. This was something new
for Coburn folks and they enjoyed it
very much.
AT REST.—Mr. & Mrs. A.J. Harter,
of this place, were calted to Hartleton,
Union county, on Saturday evening OH
account of the sudden death of Mrs.
Geo. P. Ruhl, the mother of Mrs. Har
ter. Mrs.Ruhl had been in good health
and was feeling better thau usual until
shortly before she died. She was enter
taining some frieuds at the supper table
on Saturday evening and partook of a
hearty .meal herself, when almost in
the "twinkling of an eye" hei head
dropped on the table and her spirit left
the body for a higher and happier
sphere. Mrs.Ruhl was a model wife and
mother,a lady and an esteem
ed neighbor. Her death is an unspeak
able bereavement to her kiud husband
and loving children and the writer offers
his sincere sympathy in their heavy af
fliction. The funeral will take place to
morrow.
—Last week's Bellefonle Watchman
contains the following, which may
serve as a warning to handle coal stoves
with care during the coming winter :
SUFFOCATED BY COAL GAS. Mr.
Mingle, of tbe Pennsvallev Banking
Company at Centre Hall, sent us by
telephone yesterday morning the par
ticulars of a sad affair in that place on
Wednesday night. It appears that Mrs.
Susan McCulley, an old lady who lives
in the house adjoining Mr. Mingle's
residence, probably afraid to stay alone
secured Mamie Keller, a little daughter
of tx-Treasurer D. C Keller, to sleep
with her. The two seem to have gone
to bed with the dampers of the stove
turned so that the gas from the coal es
caped in such quantities as to fill the
room and render them unconscious.
Not making their appearance in the
morning, at the usual time and tbe
house remaining umpened, with no
signs of life about it, Mr. Mingle pro
cured a ladder and with Dr. Alexander
entered a window, when the old lady
was found nearly dead, as was suppos
ed, and the little girl unconscious. The
proper remedies were promptly applied
by Dr. Alexander, and we are pleased
to say that the child Mamie is now out
of danger. It is feared, however, that
the old lady cannot recover.
DID it ever occur to you, thoughtful
and prudent reader, that Dr. Kessler's
Celebrated English Cough Medicine

could the manufacturer ever be able to
advertise "money refunded to all dis

Four Boats W recked in the Schuyl

Peril.
At Black Rock, near spring City, in
i the Schuylkill Canal, during the etortn
last night, four boats were wrecked.
The dam at this point is yery wide.
The violence of the winds broke the
tow-lines and the boats were drifted
into the breast of the dam. They were
so far away from the tow-path that it
I was impossible to cast a tow-line
I ashore. Several drivers made an effort
| to reach them in small canoes, but the
I latter capsized and a man named Dona

For several hours the adrift boats
rocked to and fro at the mercy of the
5 winds. The families on uoard were
panic-stricken, as it was expected every
moment that the boats would be dashed
to pieces. They crouched together in
the cabins. About midnight the storm
abated and the families were taken
ashore. The individual boat Peerless
ran ashore and filled with water. The
crew easily escaped. The storm of last
