Mrs. Vanderbilt's "Dummy." A New York letter relates how Mrs. Vanderbilt is able to sec herself, In one respect, at least, as others see her: I came across a Vanderbilt privi lege of wealth unexpectedly in the establishment of a tailor for women. A girl stood in the centre of a work room while a male expert fitted a gar ment to her upper figure. "That is Mrs. Wiliam K. Vanderbilt," said one. Nonsense," I ejaculated. "Will ie Vanderbilt's wife hasn't red hair, nor a face at all like that." "What I mean, was the explanation, "is that the girl is posing as Mrs. Vanderbilt. The two are exactly the same size and shape. This one is hired to serve in the place of the millionairess in tho laborious matter of having costumes fitted. The garment now being taken in, let out and generally adapted is for Mrs. Vanderbilt, who is at her ease in Newport, while the double endures tho hour or two of tiresome standing. Mechanical forms are common for that purpose, and most of our rich custom - ers keep them with ua, which can change position, walk about, sit down, and in the other ways demonstrate perfectly the effect of tho raiment under process of making. Mrs. Van derbilt will not endure the fatigue of the thing herself, even when in town, and it was her own suggestion that a duplicate of herself be employed. On her order sought and found a perfect counterpart—a girl who was working in a cloak shop connected with our business; and she has served iu lieu of Mrs. Vanderbilt foamearly a j car. Not only in dimensions is she suited to the requirements, but in movements and carriage she is wonderfully like her employer; and so it is possible for the latter to see herself as others see her— in the matter of dress." If the boy who exclaimes "just my luck!'* was truthful, he would say "just my laziness!" or "just my inat tention. * Mr Cobden wrote proverbs aboot Luck and Labor. It would be well for boys to memorise them: Luckis waiting for something to turn up. Labor, with keen eyes and strong will, will turn up something. Luck lies in bed and wishes the post man wonld come and bring him the news of a legacy. Labor turns out at six o' clock, and with busy pen or ringing hammer lays the foundation for competence. Luck whines. Labor whistles. Luck relies on chance. Labor on character. Luck slips down to indigence. Labor strides up to independence. —Deinioger's Ready Reference Tax Receipt Book ts growing in public fa vor. Customers from a distance are beginning to call for it.
