    Life Saved by Hanging Upside
Down.
A singular affair occurred in one of
the pleasantest homes iu the suburbs of
our city on Friday, the relation of which
may not only be of some interest, but
also of some use to the reader. A few
days ago the family physician yisited
the same residence, and iu the course of
conversation mentioned that while at
tending a sick child the child had sud
denly begun to suffocate, owing to a
quantity of mucus getting into its
windpipe, and he had turned the child
upside down in order to relieve it. Tins
story passed a'most unnoticed, except
by the sister of the lady of the house.
On Friday the family, consisting of
husband, wife and wife's sister, were
at the table eating. Suddenly the wife
began to show signs of suffocation. Her
husband resorted to the familiar rem
edy of patting her smartly on the back;
but it was unavailing. She could not
speak; her face became of a purple hue
and she ias evidently at the point of
death. At this moment her sister, re
membering the doctor's story, seized
her by the ankles. The husband caught
the idea instantly, and the lady was
soon in an inverted position .wheieupon
she immediately coughed up the food
which had nearly caused her death. The
husband blesses himselt for the story
which the doctor so casually told, with
out any thought that it might help to
save a life.—Providence Journal.

An Auger to Bore aSquare Hole.
The first and only auger ever manu
factured that will bore a square hole, is
now in the shops of the Cleveland Ma
chine company. This auger bores a
two inch square hole, the size used in
ordinary frame buildings and barns,
but they can be made on the same
principle to bore square holes of auy
size. Its application is ordinary and
works on the same principle as round
bole augers. Its end, instead of hav<
lug a screw or bit, has a commotion
which oscillates a cotter mounted on a
steel rocking knife which cuts on both
aides.
In order to prevent the splintering of
the wood the ends of the cutter are
provided with small semi-circular shap
ed saws which help in catting oat per
fectly square corners. It is estimated
that this new process will saye the la
bor of three meu who cut with chisels
as one man can conveniently cut a two-
Inch mortice in the same length of time
he can bore a round bole. The inven -
tion it the work of a Wooster man wlio
has given the subject years of patient
thought.
