    Toot.
A wealthy lady had issued invita
tions for a dinner party of twelve, and
on the morning of the appointed day,
when conferring with her head servant,
she discovered that one of the twelve
silver shells, in which scalloped oysters
were to be served, had been misplaced.
Rigid search for the missing article
haying proved unavailing, the lady d -
cided that, sooner than give up that
particular course, she would simply de
cline oysters when they were handed
her, and so the eleven shells would be
sufficient.
But when the'seryant handed her the
oysters at dinner she was interested in
conversation, and mechanically took
them.
If the servant's heart fell in conster
nation at this, he gaye no external sign
of it, bat, speaking in terms distinct
though low, said, respectfully :
Excuse me, madam, but you said I
was to remind you that the doctor for
bade you eatiug oysters.'
His mistress laughed, and returned
the oysters, saying (in explanation to
her guests:
'I am so absent minded that I have to
engage Thomas to remember things for
me sometimes,' which, indeed, was lit
erally true.
Afterwards the lady told the story
against herself, as a striking instance
of tact on the part of her servant.
