    Mrs. Gate's Experiment.
From one of the trains that came
fo&riag ana tearing into Blithedale sev
eral times a day ,a lady alighted one X o
yeraber morning, whose characteristics
were an unmistakable city air, and a
general aspect of never having been in
Blitbedale before. She was not sure,
\ so far, that she would care ever to be in
it again, tor the New Jersey town did
impress her picturesquely. She object
ed both to the redness of the soil and
the matter of fact expression of the
houses.
Yet Blitbedale was always described
as "a place of resort" in summer and
early autumn, and "within easy access
of the city;" but the last of November
is an unfavorable season for such set
tlements, when the green, leafy gla
mour of summer has vanished, and the
bridal veil of winter has not yet been
thrown over the scene.
Mrs. Rapson was making an experi.
mental and unheralded yisit to her
friend, Mrs. Gates, who about three
months ago had been obliged, by unex
pected losses, to go into exile on the
line of the NewJerseyCeutral Railroad,
and having some friends in the place,
■be chose Blithedale. What she was
doing with herself there, and in what
way she was able to live on next to
nothing, remains to be seen.
It was not difficult to find the house,
the street being given ; but when found
it was something of a shock to a lady
from New York. It was of wood, din
gy white in hue, and the two-storied
front slanted to a point over the win
dows, giving the impression that by
some accident, which could scarcely be
called a happy one, the sides of the
dwelling had got turned to the front.
The door and windows were small an 1
severely plain ; there was ground on
both sides of the house, and a flagg* d
walk led from the low wooden gate to
the steps.
A door bell was a rather unexpected
piece of civilization, and the visitor's
ring was quickly answered by a neat,
smiling handmaiden, with a very Ger
man face. Mrs. Gates was at home.
and her friend was requested to walk
into the sitting room, which appeared
to cross the entire house.
It was fairly tapestried with vines,
and in the windows were blooming
plants. An open Franklin stove, the
next best thing to a grate, had a cheer
ful fire in it, and there was a general
look of warmLli and brightness about
tbe large, low room, that impressed the
Visitor very pleasantly. Perhaps the
lounge and easy-chair, coyered with
Turkey red, might have had something
to do with this; but the whole room j
was a study. 'Alice's flat in—street
was a perfect poem, to be sure,' inused
tbe lady, 'but who wonld expect her to
make a hut like this habitable look
ing V
Alice herself bad now appeared from
some mysterious back precinct with a
warm welcome, and she was immedi
ately called upon to give an account of
herself.
'There is not very much to give,' she
began, smilingly. *\ou were so late
this year at your beloyed mountains,
that my flitting had to be done while
you were away. No, I didn't 'feel
dreadfulij' at all at having to Jo it. I
am very fond, you kuow, of the Joys
and Saunderses, who haye homes here,
and I mean to make the best of it.
When more than half of my little capi
tal was swept away. I felt that the first
reduction to be made was m rent, and
1 get this ugly, comfortable little house
for twenty dollars a month, while my
fourth story, cabinet finished flat cost
me, as you well know, sixty dollars.'
'But are not other expenses very
much tbe same ?'
'By no means. # Provisions are at
least a third cheaper than in New York
for Blithedale has quite a reputation in
this respect ; and Louisa, my German
maiden, apprize among servants, is ab
solutely contented with eight dollars a
month.*
'Well, this is certainly Arcadia in
one way, if not in another F said the
astonished visitor.
*1 must show you the house,' contin
ued Mrs.. Gates. 'lt is better than it
looks; but first you shall see my greeu
bouse.'
Her friend restrained her surprise as
she was conducted through a doorway
into an unpretending lean-to, with
sloping glass roof and glass front and
sides, quite filled with callas and car
nations, that promised abundant bloom
shortly. Every plant looked green and
glossy, and the temperature of the place
seemed perfect.
'This and the steam pipes for heating
were all in readiness when 1 took the
house, having been put in by the own
er for hia own use. But the doctors
ordered him south for bis health, and I
. fortunately appeared just at the right
time.'
'lt is very nice, you were always so
fond of flowers,' murmured her perplex
d friend.
'Yes, and you remember how I al
ways had something in bloom in my
New York flat ? It was that circum
stance which made me bold enough to
venture on a greenhouse.'
•And you have no roses ?' asked Mrs.
Bapeon, who did not quite see her way
through this greenhouse problem.
'Nothing but callas and carnations ?'
•Nothing but ca'las and carnations,'
rejoined her hostess, 'for both require
the same temperature and moisture,
both are easy to raise, and both make
generous returns in the way of bloom.
Within a fortnight I shall begin to eut,
and keep steadily at it all through the
winter. I see from your puzzled face,
Cornelia, that you do not understand
me. You must know, then, that my
greenhouse is altogether a commercial
venture; and the expected blossoms are
to adorn the windows of a city florist
who has agreed to take from me all that
I can raise, at a very remunerative
price.'
' 'What ever made you think of it T
gasped the amazed visitor.
1 Poverty , my dear,' laughed Mrs.
Gates; 'it sharpens one's faculties won
derfully. I knew that something must
be done to increase the pittance that
remains to me, and flower-raising pre
sented a more attractive field than any
thing else that seemed practicable. So
I consulted florists and successful Gard
ners, read a little, and determined to
venture with my two varieties. The
great fault with beginners is that they
attempt too much at once. It was
just the right season for my experi
ment, and I was fortunate enough to
make my purchases at great advantage.
The excitement, even at this stage, is
delightful. I am intensely inter.sted
in every leaf that puts forth, and when
the flowers coiuo I shall scarcely be able
to contain myself.'
'I am very much interested too,' re
plied lier friend, 'and I have no doubt
that you will be successful. I only
wish that two or three other impecun
ious women of my acquaintance had
your courage. It'must be remembered,
though, that it is not an easy matter to
happen upon a house at a small rental
with a greenhouse attached. This has
saved you quite an outlay at the begin
ning.'
'Very true; but I should not hesitate
to make the outlay, with my present
knowledge. I would even borrow the
money to do it, for two hundred dollars
would build aud stock it, and the fust
season's returns should more than pay
for-it. Tell the impecunious women to
tiy it.'
'But you used to write very cleverly,'
pursued Mr.-, Rapsoit : 'would it i.ot
have !een more agreeable and quite as
profitable to stick to your pen ?'
For answer, her host* ss pointed to
the little writing desk in the silling
ioom, which had been saved from tie
wr< ck of tie fl it, '1 have a story there
just ready to mail now,' she said. 'One
occupation does not interfere with the
other, aDd I thiuk I write all the better
for my new experience.'
'You are a wonderful woman, Alice,'
was the reply, 'and this is a chaiming
lunch to which we are sitting down.'
Everything was good of its kind,
though simple, and the visitor ate with
an appetite. She even promised 10
comi for a week's stay before Christ
mas, after a sight of the quaint up stair
rooms,furnished characteristically; and
when she returned to the train, she was
quite persuaded that her friend's move
to BJithedale was a very sensible one.
On Mrs. Rapson's second visit, she
saw boxes of callas and carnations care
fully packed in wet inoss, and dispatch
ed by rail to the city. She saw, also,
the encouraging cluck that was receiv
ed in return, and she no longer doubted
the success of Mis. Gate's experiment.

DR. JOHN BULL'S
SuMTvSfiU
FOR THE CURE OF
FEVEfI and AGUE
Or CHILLS and FEVER,
AND ALL MALARIAL DISEASES.
The proprietor of this celebrated medi
cine justly claims for it a superiority over
| ell remedies ever offered to the public for
the SAFE, CERTAIN, SPEEDY and PER
MANENT cure of Ague and Fever, or Chills
and Fever, whether of short or long stand
ing. He refers to the entire Western and
Southern country to bear him testimony to
the truth of the assertion that in no ease
whatever will it fail to cure if the direc
tions are strictly followed and oarried out.
In a great many cases a single dose has
been sufficient for a cure, and whole foxni
lies have been cured by a single bottle, with
a perfect restoration of the general health.
It is, however, prudent, and in every ease
more certain to cure, if its use is oontinusd
in smaller doses for a week or two after the
disease has been checked, more especially
in difficult and long-standing case*. Usu
ally this medicine will not require any aid
to keep the bowels in good order. Should
I the patient, however, require a cathartic
medicine, after having taken three or four
doses of the Tonio, a single dose of BULL'S
VEGETABLE FAMILY FILLS will bo out
ficient.
BULL'S SARSAPABILLA is the old and
reliable remedy for impurities of the hleod
j and Scrofulous affections—the King of
Blood Purifiers.
DR. JOHN BULL'S VEGETABLE WOBJC
DESTROYER is prepared in the form of
eandy drops, attractive to the sight and
pleasant to the taste.
