THE STATE CONVENTION.
From the Patriot, Aptil, Pth.
ALLENTOWN, April B.—By every
. train to-night croYvds .come from all
quarters until the hotels and boarding
houses are croYvded and most of the
private houses are entertaining visit
ors. At noon Mr. Randall arrived
from Philadelphia. He Y\*as entertain
ed at the residence of Col. W. H. SOYV
den, where, during the day, there was
a constant stream of visitors paying
their compliments to the now recog
nized favorite son.
It will be RANDALL for candidate
for President.
THE Clinton county democratic
committee met at Lock Haven on
Wednesday, April 2nd and decided on
June 4th to hold the county conven
tion. Judge W. W. Rankin, James
Nickson and C. R. Noyes are the un
instructed delegates to the state con
vention.
THE house of representatives passed
a bill on April Ist, providing that the
trade dollars shall be redeemed at their
face value. It is expected that the
senate will give its assenting voice to
the final passage of the bill.
WASHINGTON LETTER.
WASHINGTON, D. C. April 7th. 1884.
As it now stands the exonerating
yeport of the special committee is a
pretty mess for both Keifer and Boyn
ton, and a very touching comming
ling of compliment and equivocation
which the committee allowed itself to
indulge in. Bovnton is exonerated
from the charge made against him by
Keifer, because Keifer's testimony
does not come up to the committee's
standard of legal preponderance, al
though his evidence was confirmed by
two witnesses. Boynton being the
defendant,is entitled to the benefit of
the doubt which the committee enter
tained that the whole brood of the
witnesses on both sides Yvercnot lying
at each other straight from the shoul
der throughout. The committee nev
ertheless declares that both of the gen
tlemen are of unblemished character,
so far as the committee is able to judge
from the testimony, and the powerful
effort made by each to prove the oth
er a liar, the committee hopes, may
not again find imitators in the Repub
lican ranks. It may here be said that
Boynton's denial about the McGarra
hau claim business is very like the
pleading of the great sheridan in the |
borrowed kettle rape, in that he nev
er knew MeGarrahan, and if he did it
was not corruptly, and if corruptly,
there was no malice prepense about it.
Those who believe that the public
domain should remain in the actual
possession of (Jovorninent, to be dis
tributed to actual settlers instead of
going into the hands of speculators
and laml-pilingers, will be pleased to
learn that the Government is evincing
a determination to enforce what law
there is in protecting itself against the
stupendous frauds that have become
bold to actual defiance. The fencing
in of millions upon millions ot acres of
the public lands by herdsmen, the
frauds practiced upon the Government
in the occupation of other millions of
acres of land under the homestead and
preemption laws, through forged and
perjured affidavits, and the appropria
tion of immense bodies of timber land
belonging to the reservations, have
been going on for years in the taee ol
the efforts that have been put forth by
the Government to restrain them,
which from the inadequacy of the ap
propriations for special agents, have
thus far proved futile. The Interior
Department, however, has found suffi
cient authority to take this particular
bull by the horns and. without respect
to persons, the special agents have re
ceived their instructions to ferret out
evorv instance of fraud and follow it
up to the conviction and punishment
of the offender. It transpires that
some of the men involved in the fenc
ing in of public domain are those who
affect to stand well with the Govern
ment, and therefore presume them
selves exempt from legal interference,
but Secretary Teller's instructions are
to the effect that the whole system
shall he wiped out root and branch,
and the eases now pending before the
United States courts in the States and
Territories show that the agents have
already entered upon the work.

A Drummer Attacked by High
waymen-
SELINSGROVE, April s.— This after
noon as Willis Hess, a commercial trav
eler, was crossing the ridge between
New Berlin and Win field on his way to
Northumberland and while passing
through a small strip of v.oods, two
tramps rushed front behind a cluster ot
bushes and seized the horse by the bri
dle and demanding that Mr. Iless
should halt. After stopping the horse
one remained at the horse's head while
the other drew a knife, saying: "I'll
end you if you dont shell out your dust,'
and was in the act of climbing into the
buggy, when Mr. Hess drew a revolver
and fired two shots at him. ly this
time the tramp who held the horse had
tied in the woods, leaving his compan
ion to fight his way out. Mr. Hess
plied the whip on his horse and made
his escape. He says he is not sure
whether any of the shots fired took ef
fect, but immediately after the second
shot his assailant fell to the ground.
- s-
It has been stated, and some sports
men will, no doubt, ne sorry to hear it.
that a fishing-pole has been invented
that registers every fish caught. This
will do away with all fish stories, inas
much as the augler with a pole that
dosen't register will always be regarded
with suspicion.
