Just at this time everything seems
to be harmonious and lovely in the
Republican camp. The recent- arbitra
tion of the chief sachems in Philadel
phia, has awarded the goods and chat
tels of the concern so manifestly fair
that all concerned are happy. Came
ron—of course with much reluctance,
lias agreed to do the bossing for an
other year and will see to it that none
but the right stripe be appointed to
office. Reaver and the balance of the
elate are to be nominated. Charley
Wolfe and the others of the Independ
ent gang auree to take out all their
claims and demands in priuciples, plat
forms and resolutions, and a general
balance of accounts is struck by a prom
ise of reform next year. The Independ
ents of course get the best of the bar
gain by many odds, and are as jubilant
over the result of the settlement as
was the Irish bod carrier, who wrote
back to his old friends in Ireland what
a pleasant passtime it was to carry the
Ind in Arumirricca. All that is necces
sary for me to do, wrote Pat, is to car
ry plenty of brick and mortar, and the
bosses do all the work themselves.
Subornation of Penury.
WILLIAMSPORT, May ti.—Late last
night McKenuey Smith, ex-County
Commissioner, was arrested for subor
nation of perjury growing out of his
trial and acquittal for forgery before
the Criminal Court this week, and
held for trial. The information was
made by A.J. Webster, one of counsel
engaged in prosecuting him for forgery,
Ilis arrest was hastened last night by
a suspicion that lie was preparing to
skip the county to avoid further prose
cution for peculations while in office.
To-day the Board of County Comtnis
sioneis employed Samuel L. Linn, P.
K. Allen and Addison Candor to con
duct the proposed suit against the
members of the old board on the
charge of robbing the county. Their
arrest will soon folluw and their alleg
ed crooked conduct will undergo a
rigid judicial investigation.
URIAH MOYER TO HANG.
Supreme Court Refuses Appeal
for New Trial.
SELINSQROEE, May s.—The case of
the commonwealth against Uriah Mey
er, one of the convicted and sentenced
Kintzler murd tiers, came up iu the su
preme court an dit was non prossed.
The defendant wanted the case contin
ued, but the co urt refused the applica
tion. It is not known whether there
will be an effort to secure the interven
tion of the board of pardons. Uriah
Moyer is the member of the mountain
gang who fled to Michigan soon after
the murder, an d remained there, as he
suppposed, in safe concealment for
some time. Detective Lyon discovered
his whereabouts, however, and arrested
him. Moyer was sentenced -to death
and an appeal was taken to the su
preme court.

TERRIBLE CRIME
LORD CAVENDISH AND HIS
UNDER SECRETARY ASSASIN
ATED.
The man murdered whom Porster
had selected to carry out hi 3 peace
policy in Ireland.
Advices from Dublin under date of
May (.til state that Secretary Lord
Cavendish, and Under Secretary
BurKe, were cruelly assassinated in
Phcvnix Park, Dublin, at about 7
o'clock of that day. They were botli
strolling in the park about half a mile
from the city gate and a quarter of a
mile from the chiet secretary's lodge
when a car drove up containing four
men, two of whom jumped down from
the car and attacked Lord Frederick
Cavendish and Mr. Puike, stabbing
them both several times in the throat
find breast. The victims struggled
hard for life and in the struggle be
came separated, their bodies being
found about ten paces apart. The
tragedy occuired about ten minutes af
ter 7 o'clock iu the evening and in
broad daylight. The bodies were first
discovered by two young gentlemen
who were riding bicycles through the
park, and who immediately gave the
alarm to tho police. Surgeons soon
reached the spot, but the police were
already conveying Mr. 11 Hike's body a*
way to town, where an examination
showed life to be extinct. The upper
part of the body was perforated in a
shocking manner and presented a
ghastly sight. Proceeding further
the medical men reached the body
of Lord Frederick Cavendish,
which was being conveyed away fivm
the park on a stretcher. The body of
the cief secretary displayed the same
dreadful wounds, in addition to which
iiis left arm wis also broken and torn
as if he had put it up to protect his
breast. Lord Frederick Cavendish was
(piite dead. The bodies were taken
to Steven's hospital, where they will
remain until an inquest is held. The
locality of the outrage is terribly mark
ed with blood. The spot where the
body of Lord Frederick Cavendish was
found was absolutely deluged, while
Mr. Burke's body lay in a pool of blood.
It is said that after the act the murd
erers immediately drove off. There
seems to bo no clue to the assasshis at*
present, but the police are taking most
extraordinary measures to discover the
perpetrators. A largo quantity of
notes and gold coin besides their gcl l
watches were found in the pockets of
tho victims which showed that the ob
ject of the crime w.as not rabbery.
Great excitement prevail? throughout
Dublin and widespread iudignation is
expressed over the event.
No motive is known for the dre.vlful
deed, and no clue to the dastardly as
sassins is yet apparent.
A CONDUCTOR'S CONDUCT.
It Costs a Railroad Company
Three Thousand Dollars.
NEW YORK, May s.—Wra. Peas to
day obtained a juJgeuoent far?3,ooo a
gair.st the Delaware and Lickawana
railroad company for forcible ejection
from a train because he offered the
conductor the wrong part of an excur
sion ticket, the other part having been
taken up by mistake by another con
ductor.
THE contract for the grading and
masonry ot the Sham )kin, Sunbury &
Lewisburg rail road has been awardod
to Thomas Rellly, of Pottsville
and William Nolan of Reading. The
work will require about a year, and is
estimated to co3t over a million dol
lars.
THE beautiful and massive court
house of Ailegheny county was totally
destroyed by fire last S'unday. The
loss is $200,000, with only ?50,000 in
sured. One life was also lost.
