RY. —A child, nineteen montlis old,
of Daniel Boyle, of Harper's
Ferry, a few mornings since, while

which curled itself around the child's

got!" The snake was a venomous

We are informed, that Mr. J. C.
Springer, a former resident of this
town, at present living in Bradford,
Dark Co., Ohio, is thrown on his
sickbed, but cannot state in what
his ailment consists. Hope he may
soon recover.
ACCIDENT. —On Tuesday WHILE
Mr. Noah Stover's woikmen firere
hauling in grain, a little son of Mr.
Stover fell from tne wagon ami was
passed over, the wheel crossing his
breast. We understand that he Was
not as much hurt as might have
been expected under the circum
stances and may get over it rather
lightly.
The New Yovk World has been
compiling a table of persons who
were killed or wounded on the Fourth
of July by pistols and firecrackers.
The list already contains the names
of eighteen dead and one bundled
and seven wounded, and this was
only in the cities and larger towns.
A complete record for the whole
country would furnish as long a list
of casus lit ios as a respectable battle.

SAD AND FATAL ACCIDENT.— On
Tuesday morning Mr. Michael Het
tinger, residing in George's Valley,
was driving homeward, but met with
an accident that resulted in the loss
of his life. He had two horses
hitched in a buggy, and when a short
piece tevoud the George's Valley
Church one of the horses became
unmanageable and commenced kick
ing, which started both horses on a
run off. Mr. H. m his efforts to
subdue tlie animals, was thrown
from the buggy, falling on his head
so violently as to fracture his skull.
!He died yesterday morning. We
; are thus called upon to mourn the
sudden departure of one of our most
, useful citizens—in the very prime of
; life. Truly: "In the midst of life
we are in death."
MR. JOSEPH C. XESRIT, of the
firm of Nesbit Bro's, of the East
Lewisburg Mfg. Company paid our
valley a visit, this week for the first
time in his life. Wo showed Joseph
around a little and he seemed pleased
with our beautiful and fertile val
leys and the variegated scenery.
Especially was he delighted with a
drive through the beautiful iuoun
| tain pass north of town.
The Brothers —and they are full
sized men in every sense —have one
of the best and most complete plan
ing mills iu the interior or the state.
They manufacture School furniture
on a large scale, and Joseph just the
other day contracted to furnish the
desks for two new school houses, one
to be built near Spring Mills, the

MR. B F. STEWART, of the The
ological Department of the Mission
ary Institute at Selinsgroye, is now
here engaged in Belling books for
the American Tract Society. lie
follows this business during vacation
in order to earn means to complete
his course. He is preparing him
self for the African mission work
and manifests much industry and
zeal in his chosen calling. He is a
young man of much promise and we
feel confident that lie has entirely
devoted himself to *he great mission
work that calls so loudly for help.
Mr. S. is a young mail of educa
tion, culture and piety, and has the
happv faculty to make film friends
at first sight. He has already at
tended Howard University, at Wa
shington, D. C., for two successive
years, and the Theological Depart
ment at Selinsgrove for one year.
We hope our people will give him
a liberal support.
In Custer city, Bradford county,
this state, they had a real bull and
bear fight, on the first of this month.
Bradford county was always in the
habit of claiming high distinction
on educational and moral grounds,
but a few more such disgusting
scenes will bring upon her the mer
ited contempt and odium of other
counties and communities. An ex
change graphically describes the
matter thus:
An audience of seven hundred persons,
nin-nic whom were ladies (?) and children,
assembled to witness the snort cf a fero
cious fight between a bull ana a bear. Be
fore the engagement commenced, the .au
dience shouted wildly for the animals to be
led into the arena. In due time the fight
commenced, and as a result, both unimnls
are expected to die. A man and a woman,
too were lujured by the War In his attempts
to escape. But still the audience seemed to
enjov the disgusting sight, and shouted
and laughed in demoniac glee. To hear of
such an occurrence so near to us was a dis
agreeable nnd we hope the good
sense of every community wtll prevent a
similar cxhioition ever happening again.
SPRING MILLS ITEMS
The new turn-table has been pui
in at last, and it is a solid job. The
stone used are estimated to weigh
ten tons.
The young man Dunkle, who rob
bed Mr. Joint S. Aumans house, the
other Sunday, was caught and sits
iu awaiting trial.
Miss Maggie Hannah will open a
school in the Hill School House,
next Monday She is a successful
teacher. Parents, don't neglect to
send your children.
We had a terrible storm ?iero last
Friday, doing much damage. At
John Coldren's it tore off barn doors
and uprooted apple and cherry trees.
At J. W. Evans' it took away part
of the old chimney and tore down a
large number of trees. At P. A.
Auman's pait of the barn roof was
earned away. At M. D. Leitzell's
it threw two large oak trees into the
garden, destroying nearly everything
in it. The fine willow trees in front
of Mr. Peter Wilsons were much in
jured. The rood became so obstruct
ed as to be Impassible after the
storm. The road through George's
Valley was entirely blockaded. Over
5000 trees were blown down from
here up along Sinking Creek. At W.
F. Rerick's the storm tore off the
barn doors, carried out a buggy that
was standing in the barn and
broke it iuto kindling wood. Near
Farmer's Mills Ben Smith's stable
was unroofed. Mr. Geo. Spicer's
house with ail the furniture in it
was blown to atoms aud scattered to
the winds. All that was left un
broken is 1 cup, 1 saucer and 1 plate,
The root and second floor were car
ried over a woods into Rishel's field.
Mr. Spicer and family were absent
the time the storm happened, else
the loss of some lives would probab
ly be mourned. Fisher's saw mill
was unroofed, Rachau's chimney
torn down, and much other damage
! was done all around here to build
ings, fences and trees. It was hard
; to tell from whence the storm came,
as it see mod to come from all diree
i tions. The Storm King has given
t us a pretty good taste of bis power,
t and it makes us think ot wbat they
' experience in the west.

is just a few rods west of the old
mill mansion and is a very line place
for a dwelling house.
The only new side walk to report
this week is that of our next door
neighbor, Mr. A. C. Musser. Would
like to report at the rate of about
six per week.
The harvest is over aiul the crop
in this section is hardly up to a fair
average, though it is bettor than the
prosjiects in early spring had indi
cated.
Tellow fover has again made its
appearance in Memphis, and the po
pulation is panic-stricken. Hund
reds are leaving just as fast as steam
can carry them, although bfit a few
cases have occurred as yet.
Business is looming up in Selins
grove, the Maine Saw Mill is run
ning, Kelly & Wagner'siSash Factory
is in operation, Keller's boat yard is
busy and the two foundries are in
full blast.
Last Friday we bad one of the
most copious rains ever witnessed in
this section. The rain came in tor
rents. and some folks even said it
rained potatoes, but we cannot vouch
for that statement.
By the Lewisburg Journal we see
that John F. Duncan. Esq., has re
cently been elected Secretary of the
Home Building Association, rice,
C. 11. Hassenplug. This is a respon
sible and we trust lucrative position.

built at Orwig's Mill, Lewis tbwn
ship, Union county, which was de
dicated last Sunday, the 13th. This
is the birth place of Rev. \Y. W. <Jr
wig, one of tho pioneers and ablest
ministers of that denomination.
Berks county rejoices in the pos
session of a couple of people—John
Powers and his sister—whose com
bined weight is over 1,500 pouuds.
John is only twenty and weighs over
TOO pounds, while his sister goes 100
pouuds better.

have changed their corporate name
into that of Central Manufacturing
Company. That's a decided im
provement. Always did tlnnk that
the former name was too large and
cumbersome just for common use.
The Lewisburg Town Council just
now takes hold of the dog question
in earnest. An ordinance passed in
1854 is hunted up and ievived, to the
effect that no dog shall be permitted
to run at large without being muz
zled. A tax of $2 is assessed for eve
ry dog, upou the owner thereof.

POSTPONED.—The laying of the
corner stone for a new Evangelical
church in Sugar Valley, called Mil
ler's church, has been postponed to
July 20th. A cordial invitation is
extended to all to attend.

A contract for a lock up has been
awarded by oui council to Mr. J.
W. Snook, for $48.50. It is to be
built over the mill race, in the lear
of Dr. Mingle's residence. It is not
a very creditable comment that We
need an ornament of this kind, but if
one is built we hope tb.it unruly and
disorderly persons, who disturb the
peace and annoy our people, will be
lodged in it.
Messrs. Ne.sbit Brothers, of tho
East Lewisburg Mfg. Co. have erect
ed another building for finishing
purposes, to their large establish
ment. The new building is 20 by 42
feet, two stories high, and is used
exclusively for painting aud varnish
ing purposes. The Brothers are en
terprising and active business men
and they turn out only first class
work. Their school desks of which
they make a speciality, are unsur
passed.
Ilaag's New Hall, at Pleasant
Gap, which was dedicated on the
fourth, is spoken of by the Bellefonte
papei-s with praise. The Watchman
calls it a biy improvement for the
Gap and thinks Mr. Haag deserves
much praise foi his enterprise. The
first ffoor of the building is intended
for a store room and the second cou
-1 stilules the hall. It is to be used
for public and political meetings,
shows, school entertainments, and'
similar occasions.
