ceremonies has been announced as
follows;

There is a gpod deal of interest here
over the contest for Senator now
going on in Harrisburg. Senator
Wallace, who was in that eitv for a
day or two looking on, returned here
to-day He savs there is considera
ble opposition to Don Cameron but
be expresses the opinion that Came
ron will be re-electeJ. lie thinks
there is a dis|H>sitiou on the part of
the democrats to combine v\ itn the
anti-Cameion Republicans and Na
tionals ou Agnew. Russell Eirett
says that no doubt a combination
will be attempted, but he thinks it
will fail. The general opinion here
is that at a suitable time Mr. Came-
Ton will go into the arena with a
large supply of what is known in
Harrisburg as "soap," but what is
known in Washington as -'sugar,"
anJ that it will hav • the desired ef
fect. There is some plain talk to
the effect that some of the pronounc
ed anti-Cameron men will be won
over by a little ready cash.

The State Treasurer's Report does
not show a veiy flittering condition
of our financial status. The iwl

On the Ist day of Decern!*r last
there was a balance in the Treasury
of $1,021,531, of whidi sum $50,-
486 lielonged to the general luiid.
£1,068,184. of the state debt was
paid iu 1878, ont of, tin? sinking
fund, but chere was a deficiency of
$1.7 "2,519 in the general fund. In
Otner words we paul $1,068,183 of
i debt, wit made $1 762, 519 f
debt, leaving a balance of 684, 3-6
against us. The estimated expendi
tures wilJ exceed the estimated re
ceipts for r.ext year about the same
amount, even if the appropriations
are kept within the strictest limits.
The Legislature has been rather
reckless in making appropriations,
while the general expenses are in
creasing on ail hands. Unless
something effectual be done 60011 to
stay extravagance the bottom may
soon fall out of the Penna. State
Treasury under Radical rule.

That alarming: disease, the small
pox. which prevailed to a considera
ole extent a month since, has ap
parently entirely d ipne ired. It
was feared that all the public schools
of Kelly Township would have to l>e
closed. Some were closed. One of
th schools was not o|eiied at the
beginning of the winter term, in
consequence of there being a case of
smallpox within a few rods of the
school building. Although time
was hut one case in l ie district and
that has been cured two in n lis
ago. the school will probably not be
