Bpeol.il to the PATRIOT. BELLEFUSTE. DECEINWR 11. — Yesterday notice was served upon Seth 11. Yocum, the holder of the certificate of election to congress from this district, by Gov. A. G. Curtin, that the latter would con test the right of t he former to a seat in the Forty sixth con if! ess. The notice is very long, consisting of nearly one hundred sj>ec idea turns of the grounds uivm which the con testant will rely. It specifies nearly two thousand ilj<-gal and fraudulent rotes cast for Yocum in the district, in addition to which many acts of bribery and corruption, together with wilful misconduct on the part of election officers are charged. In several districts in Centre and Char field counties persons who had been elected IVniociatie judges and in spectors of election turned "Green backer" thus giving to the opposi tion to Governor Curt in the full boarda. In these districts fraud and corruption held high carnival, and the honest portion of the people of our go- d old common wealth will be surprised at the developments which will lie made in the testimo ny. W. C. Aruold, chairman of the republican county committee of Clearfield. O. Houzt. chairman in Clinton. D. 11. Hastings. Yoeuni's law partner, with several others who have heretofore claimed respectabili ty, wili proUiblv be badly smirched before the case is ended; and some of them will undoubtedly ne prose euted in the criminal couits for se ricnis offences against the laws dur ing the late campaign. There can be no possible doubt that Governor Curtin will get his sear. The frauds and illog d voting which Can be squarely proved. are sufficient to overcome a majority tea times as large as that returned for himi.— Patriot. OBJKCT3 OF BIUDIXO ASSO< 148IOX8. There are two objects of fiscal in- I f stitutions of this nature, each of j which, owing to its importance ( might very properly l>e termed pri- , ruaiy, yet we give "precedence to the ' fact that the first object is what the 1 j name in itself implies—to assist and j encourage building homes bv giving ( Aid financially to members who oth- . erwise would not t* in a position to 1 secure homes of their own ; also to j promote building and improvements r generally in towns wherein they are I established, thereby developing and ! enlarging such towns. * When we refer to the history of PUCB Associations in Philadelphia, | the time 'hat they have been intro- i duced there, their success, attested I by their growth into old and large } corporations, the many new e-vie. j j Iks organized annually. the su ruble aid tiiat they have given i members to build, the inculcnl ude j factors they have been in thf devep \ optnent of the city, the fact will be - impressed upon our mind that they . ' are of benefit to members and to ; places wherein organised. I The other primary object is that ' parties may invest their monthly surplus orsavingt which when t>uv- ! tr.ents and gain accumulations have J - matured the series wherein stock is ( held entitles litem to two hundred , dollars for every share held. The term saving with m;mv in- !j jFiies what they can lay aside bv cur- ; , tailing tlieir usual household expe.n- , ses ai d it is in this sn * that it properly applies here and the import- j ttnee of having an accumulated fund to which payment must le ad- ( •led, should not be underest i mated, . for the reason that many under or- i dinary circumstances unless they have something to stimulate, will tot have any surplus left. That a person having shares upon j which monthly dues are to tie paid, will not lie stimulated to save, uo , one will question ; or again that it , is the duty ot all having families to economize sufficiently to leave an annual surplus. Having referred to these objec s and ad antages we will also speak of their proper manage meat. t The proper investment of the funds and economical a hninistr.i- ' tioirof affairs is all that is necessa- , ry to insure s ifetv aid profit to in vestor and at the same time secure the growth and success of such or ganization. The losses tnat some old Associa tions suffered were caused by the investment of too much money in individual properties. The shrinkage in values of real estate during the ' ---last few years raturallv would then, cause a material deficiency in the as sets of such institutions. But shrinkages are at the bottom. We are in the ascending scale finan cially, therefore it is a very auspi cious time to extend business and se cure new stock. .Series sof the Millheim Building & Loan Association has b & en open ed find subscriptions are solicited to the new series. That jolly. popular old fellow, Mr. 3ast season, while the direct and indirect loss s in money and trade have been esti mated at $175,000,000, out will doubtless largely exceed that sum. He has found since that it would have been much cheaper to have his accident published in all its details, us lie has been compelled to tell the whole story at least several hundred times over. Of course ev ery one that sees his bruised and scarred face wants to know how it all happened. He had a notion once to publish ! the whole m ilter in pamphlet form 1 and distribute it among his friends hut that idea was soon abandoned as too expensive. Again he thought lie would get a stovepipe hat, cover ed with a printed account of the matter; but then he won In have been obliged to stand in the cvld for hours to let people read it. Houses, barns and all kinds of movable property were carried off bi idges were swept away and rail road tracks were torn up. The Ja*- high, Buslrkill and Delaware rivers are reported to have been unusually , high. The Susquehanna river rose | at some places to tweiitv-tive f*n-t | aliove low-water mark. The tra.ns i along the river have lieen delayed by j the damages caused on the tracks. ! Several bridges that span the river j were swept away, and driftwood, logs , upturned ho its, stacks of hay . and grain could he seen moving swiftly along. The farmers are he .vy losers, as large amounts of grain have been carried away. In Williainsno' t the water entered the buildings near the liver, ami many ' houses were fl >oded to the second story. The mills and lumber yards ; j with but few exceptions, were in the j water. Considerable damage has ; been done, and a large am mat of I i iabor will lie required to repair the ! i injuries. The losses caused by these ; floods are counted by thousands. In our own town the Elk Creek 1 rose to a considerable height, and j nearly all the cellars were more or less ft'led with water, doing some I damage he-e and there. One of the j railroad bridges between Coburu ! and Spring Mills Station had given ; away, ami tlie regular train on that i route was prevented to cross the sa me. DIED FOI: LOVE.—Miss.
