SENTENCE WORTH PONDERING.
Three saloon kteuus in Chicago
were found guilty of selling lipuor
to minors. This is the address of
the judge when they were sentenced,
as reported in the Chicago Tribune :
By the law you may sell to men
andwomen, if they ill buy. You
liave given your bond, and paid your
license to sell them, and no one has
a light to molest you in your legal
busiuess. No matter what the con
sequences may be, no matter what
poverty and destitution are produc
ed by your stllirg according to law,
you have paid your money for this
jri\ilege, and you are licensed to
pursue your calling. No matter
what funilbs are distracted and
rendered miserable ; no matter what
wives are treated with violence,
what children starve or mourn over
the degradath n of a paient, your
Ixisiuess is hgalizrd and r.o one may
iuterfcre with you in it. No mat
ter what mother may agonize over
the loss of a sen, or sister Llush at
the shame of a brother, you have a
right to disregaid them all and pur
rue your legal calling—you ate li
cense d ! Y"on may tit up your 'law
ful place of business in the most en
ticing and captivating form ; you
may furnish it with the most costly
and elegant equipments for your
lawful trade : yen may fill it with
the slluiemcnts of oumsiments;
you may u e e all your arts to induce
v's'tors ; you may skillfully arrange
and cxp< se to view your choicest
wine and most captivating beverag
es ; you may then induce thirst by
■all contiivai.cos to produce u raging
appetite for drink, and then you
way supply that appetite to the full,
because it i lav#ul ; for you have
j aid lor it—you have a license.
" lOU may allow hoys, almost
children, to frequent your saloons ;
they may witness theappaient satis
faction with which tueir seniors
quaff The sparkling glass ; you may
he schooling and training them for
the period of twonly-or.e, wheu thcy
too, can paiticipate, for all this is
lawful. You may hold the cup to
their very Hps, but you must i.otiet
tlum di ink—that is unlawful. But
while you have all these privileges
for 'the money you pay, the poor
privilege of selling to children is de
pud you. litre parents have the
light to say—"Leave my son to me
until the law gives you the right to
destroy him. Do not anticipate ibai
terrible moment w hen I can as-ert
f-r him no further rights of protec
tion. That will be soon enough for
me, for ris m< thc-r, for his sister, '
for his friends and for the commu
nity to see hiui take las load to |
death. Give him to 113 in his child
hood days at least. Let us have'
him a few years of his youth, in
which we can ei joy his innocence, 1
to repay us in some small degree for
the care and love we have lavished ;
upon him." This is something you
who now stand prisoneis at the bar
bave not paid for ; this is not em- j
braced in your license.
"For this offense the court sen
tences you to ten days' imprison
ment in the county jail, and that
veil ray a th e of seventy-live dollars
and costs ; and that you stand com
mitted until the One and costs of
prosecution are paid.
