ANDERSON RI.I.E?SF.D.
Anderson, the convicted forger of
the infamous Louisiana Ilet urn
Board, has been released bv the Su
preme Court or that State. The de
cision of the court as we under
stand i , is based on purely technical
grounds, but will not Satisfy the
outraged sense of justice of the
country. No amount of labored
"decisions'* will be able to white
wash thost?dirty rascals in the eves
of the people, and their crime and
its consequences will forever stand
out in black relief on the pages of
American Histoiy.
The Philadelphia Times, which

speaks thus of the strange pvocecd

When, the news was carried to
Hayes that his pet Anderson was i
released, the sham President went j
into etstacies of joy, and said "that
entire Union would applaud the ac

Union" doe? no such thing, but on
the contrary the "entire Union" is
mortified- beyond expression that a
feve'ef the basest scoundrels that
ever were permitted to pollute de
cent people with their presence, j
should be permitted to appoint such
a lionenity as llaves to the Presi

The people of the United States
have paid, in interest on untaxed
National bonds since 1861, 51,690,-
442,307.32. This is almost the en
tire amount of the National debt.
How many times are the ueople to
pay the debt? To exempt bonds
from taxation was a war measure,
excusable on grounds such as per
mit another to kill some one in seli
defense. To exempt the bonds from
taxation now is like licensing a man
to kill another when not attacked. —

The Democratic State Committee
met atHairisburg on the 19th, and
fixed on May 22r.i as the time and
Pittsburg as the ■place, for holding
the next state convention. The at
tendance was very full, much inter
est was manifested, and the best of
feeling prevailed. The fixing of so
early a day for the meeting of the
convention is supposed to be a strong
indication in favor of Dill for Gov
ernor.

••The stormy march cot.o a' i i't."
Sunday and Monday that tricky
old fellow —March, showed his de
ceptive nature with a vengeance.
He lashed Ids-tail so furiously that
the dormant powers of snow and
storm were raised to shake and shiv
er men from head to foot —especially
those who had made garden and
were talking about linen coats, lem
onade and ice cream. Wc told them
so.
On account of the very long Trea
surer's sale of unseated lands which
we publish this week, our reading
matter is pretty well crowded out.
The job came upon us late and sud
denly, so that we had no chance to
arrange our forms to give more
reading matter. Much that was al
ready ill type had to be set aside.
We beg indulgence of our readers and
correspondents. X" xt week, we will
be able to do better.
A IVOR 9 IX SEASON.
Now that winter is over and
spring work tbout to commence in
earnest, let those who are more
blessed with this world's goods than
their fellow men generally, look
about them and see whether They
can not help along the poor t>v giv
ing them something to do. Most of
our laborers in this section have
spent all winter in forced idleness,
had nothing to do, and a few days
wages would be a Godsend to many
now. One of the saddest sights in
this blessed land of liberty and abun
dance is to see strong, healthy men
begging for work as a means to sup
port their families—without being
able to obtain it. The best way to
help such is to teach and enable
them to help themselves. The
worthy poor man would prefer to
ram his living, rather than receive ii
as a charity.
As times are, economy is carried
to. a point far beyond equity, by
many of our wealthier men. Build
ing and other improvements are al
most entirely stopped, because they
cost money.* Work, otter of a neces
sary kin 1, is left undone, because
times are hard. If this system is to
be continued much longer what is to
become of those whose only means
of subsistence is the labor of their
hands •' At this season, however,
there is always much to do .that is
absolute, while much morn, uiight be
done that is necessary and useful.
If you have no farm to work you
may hav a garden to dig, fence* to
make or repair, outbuildings and
fences to whitewash, yards to clean,
flower beds to make—anything that
is really useful or beautiful, only so
you do your share to give men work
and enable them to earn their daily
bread and make an honest living
(rivr mm work.

No llome is complete without
some ornamental trees, llower lads,
shrubbery, or at least one crape
vine around the buildings. Many
folks in towns may not have the
space for all or many of these beau
tiful and refuting luxuries, but there
are few, if any, houses that have no
place for at least one good vine and
a few llowers. Nothing pays the
httle 1 ibor spent upon it so well as a
choice grape vine, but it does net pay
to plant trash. Seven years ago we
