REPEAL OP TIIESCA LP LAW. -Somp
weeks ago we told our readers that tHe
scalp law had been repealed. That was
a mistake and we were as badly sold
as our readers. The repealing act has
however since passed both branches
of the legislature and be°n signed by
the Governor. We predict that skunks
| will be far less numerous in this coun
ty since no premium is offered for their
highly perfumed scalps.
"A HORRIBLE SUSPICION."— It has
lately come to light that some ingeni
; ous person has discovered a method of
extracting a kind of yellow grease re
j sembling butter in appearance from
London mud. This stuff is mysteri
ously shipped off to Holland, and a
horrible suspicion has arisen among
Indon householders that it returns
to them in the shape of Dutch Butter
so largely consumed in their kitchens.
INFANTICIDE.— Somerset county has
a case of infanticide. A party of la
die? and gentlemen who were riding
in a boat in the North Fork, at Ursin
a, discovered the body of a child
in the water. It was brought to shore
and found to be out and lacerated with
a knife in a most brutal manner, both
ears being cut off, the heart and intes
tines cut out, and gashes cut across the
head and face. A jury was empanel
ed, and a verdict rendered 'hat the
"child met with death by unknown
; hands." .Steps have been taken to fi r
ret out the perpetrator of this cruel
and Inhuman crime.

On returning home, the seat on which
the ladies were siting gave way and
they were tilted out—luckily unhurt.
The gentleman did not miss hie fair

mishap. The accident, might havo
been serious, but it turned out to 4 he

THE STATE LICENSE LAW.— The

PASSAGE OF THE POOR HOUSE BILL.
—The Poor House Bill which we pub
-1 shed two weeks ago passed both
•ranches >f the legislature with some
sight amendments and lias no doubt
H come a law by receiving the signa
ore of the Governer. The amend
nen-s are briefly these : That the
MMiimissioners —the number to lie
hree—shall lie appointed by the Court
•f Common Pleas; That the Com m is
omers shall be sworn ; that theCoun
y Commissi oners shall only pay over
noney for building purposes on drafts
<r orders signed ty at least two of the
'ommissioncrs appointed us aforesaid ;
hat incase a majority of the votes
•ast are in favor of retaining the pres
ent Poor House property, then the
slid Commissioners shall PDSSNHJ at
mcetoerect suitable buildings there-
We trust that this act will finally
lispose of the vexed Poor House ques
tion, and that we will before long be
ible to chronicle the fact th >.t our coun
;y is in possession of buildings suitable
for the proper keeping and mainte
nance of the poor.
SHOOTING AFFKAY.— On Thursday
ifter noon of last week while taking our
office list to the post office we saw a
somewhat excited crowd pass
rapidly up railroad avenue. Fol
lowing them we learned that an indi
vidual named Claar, nailing from Bed
ford county, had got into a difficulty
with a one legged man named Cham
pinour. It seems that Claar's proper
ty was recently destroyed by fire, at
least such is alleged to be the ease, and
lie is now traveling the country en
deavoring to procure funds from the
benevolently disposed to aid in the e
rectiou of a new home. Meeting
Champinour in a bar room Claar, ask
ed him for some help and was refused
with remarks more forcible than ele
gant. It is said by some that Ciaar in
the excitement of the moment struck
Champinour. Others deny this. Be
this as it may, Champinour fired two
shots from his revolver at Claar, neith
er of which took effect. After this
the stranger was knocked down by
some friend of Chain pi nour's.
This is what we ha\'e been able to
glean from the testimony of those who
witnessed the affray. As how nearly
correct it may be, we do not pre
tend to say. The only glimpse of
Claar that we caught was when he en
tered the Exchange hotel, grotesquely
attired, with a rifle over his shoulder,
and apparently well armed otherwise.
He did not appear to have suffered any
serious injury. No arests were made.
Since the above was written ve
lear tliat tiie destroyed pro|ierty he
lon ed to Claar's father, he being un
tn rried. He was also treated most in-
Gmcusly by the brutal friends of
Champinour, having l>een assailed by
nearly a dozen of them at once.—Al
toona Sun.
