that if it be paid by Feb. 19, 1870, a

Bloody Run is to have a Soro-is.—
The "bubs" of the "Gregorian" have
decided in favor of "st-."
It is rumorei that the name of
Bloody Run is to be changed to that of
"Iconoclast." Heavy!
Last week, the first of the year, was
ob-erved as a "week of prayer," in the
Lutheran and Presbyterian churches
ofthis place.
Geary has turned "state- evidence"
on the "Ring." The worst of rogues
always do that to save their previous
necks.
The proprietors of the Altoona
Weekly San have published a prospec

enterprise abundant -ucce—.

The Masonic fraternity of this place

it is said that the S nate postal com

The Huntingdon Globe soliloquizes

BE. A KB SHOT. —Three bears, a moth

mountain, one day last week, by Mr. i
John Carmon and two other hunters,
from this place.
Mr. John Warfel, of Henderson tp.,
also shot one of the 'varmints,' on the
same mountain, the same week.— j

We have had very mild winter
weather since the heavy freeze ofSat
urdav and Sunday, and those having
icehouses to fill are "hurrying up the
cakes" for fear of a thaw. Ourexperi
enee in ice matters —and that doe- not
extend much beyond an "ice-cold lem
onade"—has been that the first ice of
the season is always the purest and
best.
Ho! FOR TENNESSEE!— Mr. Jacob
Fetter, of Pleasant Valley, has sold
his elegant farm for *3,600, and intends
to remove to Tennessee in the Spring.
We understand that a number of our
Bedford township friends intend go
ing to that State before long. We do .
not like to ]=art with our neighbors,
but if they ifcjl! go, we wish them all
success in their new home-.
BUSINESS.— Our friend and brother
local of the Inquirer, S. J. Jordan, Esq..
has taken an interest in that paper,
and also in the bookstore, and those
concerns will be run hereafter by
the new firm of Lutz A Jordan. —
That means business, and we congratu
late young "Uncle Bum" and wish him
lots of success in his new enterprise—
barring politics, you know.
AT WORK. — A corps of workmen
are now bu.-y preparing the lumber for
the new bridge in "The Narrows."
If the present fair weather continues,
the bridge will soon be ur, and com
munication with the ri-t of mankind
will again be resumed. Our commu
nity has suffered from the loss of the
bridge, and will hail with joy the com
pletion of the substantial structure now
being erected across the Ray-town
Branch.
The editor of the Iloliidaysburg Reg
ister is requested tossy something o
riginal, "just for once," as Greely would
-ay. The hackneyed terms which he
applies to the local of this paper have
long -ince been worn threadbare by ev
ery "ioil" -hrieker from Maine to A
lu.-ka. Astonish everybody—yourself
included—by saying something origi
nal. But, then, these "home guards"
never did know much !
A VETERAN— We received, the oth
er day, the following characteristic
note from an old subscriber and a vet

to our patrons:
"EDITORS BEDFORD GAZETTE:
Gent'emen :—l have been a subscriber
to the GAZETTE for thirty years and
have paid for it up to January, 1870. I
hope and trust all your patrons may
follow my example. If they should,

impressions on ft I urepose* ana columns
I have reached the ago of seventy six,

OR NEWS. —By dispatches and let
ter- received from Parker'.- Lauding,
we judge that quite a number of our
citizens are in luck, and more particu
larly Mos-rs. William Hartley andO.
E. Shannon, who are largely inter -t
--ed in oil operations in that region.—
We are also able to congratulate the
stockholders of the "Stump I-lands
Oil C 0.," on their good fortune, as the
yield of the wells on the property of
that company is large and astonishing
everybody. On last Wednesday the
"Lone Star" well,on the upper island,
pumped I'tO barrels. Theothtr wells
are yielding largely.
SOROSIS.— The literary societies and
educational conventions of this county
have, of late, resolved themselves into
so many Sorosisc-, and amused thern
seives and their auditory by discuss
ing ft male suffrage. Whether this i.->a
new branch of education in our com
mon school system we do not kuow,
but if so. and if the question niH-t be
agitated by our educators let it be
done by tin se who know how. Send
for Su.-an Anthony, George Francis
Train, < ady Stanton, Horace Greely,
or some other old woman. They can
elucidate "muchly" on the subject.
PITTSBURG AND CON NEEI-SVIDLE
RAILROAD. — The stockholders of this
road held a meeting in Pittsburg ou
the 6th of December, last. The Presi
dent, W. O. Hughart presented the re
port of the Directors for the year end
ing Nov. 1-t., which show - a balance of
1280,923.68, which is in the hands of the
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company
drawing six per cent, interest. The
first two sections of the road east of
Connellsville have been completed and
the Company is deriving revenue from
the same. The whole line of road is
now well manned and the work ia
progressing rapidly. The report
states that
"The enormous power and influence
of the Bait. A O. R. R. is being silent
ly but steadily exerted" to secure con
nections north and west of t'iiuburg,
and President Hughart states that'inthe
language of President Garrett, it would
be as useless to endeavor to stop the
flow of Niagara as to hinder our making
just the connections desired at the pro
per time."
"We have located a line from the
Monongahela to the Allegheny river.
The line called the Baltimore, Pitts
burg and Lake Erie Railway has also
been located by our engineers. From
Beaver to Toleda and Chicago the Pitts
burg, Baltimore and Chicago tine is
now being examined, and the location
will soon l>e made. This Company has
been organized, has elected an effi
cient Board, with Judge Walker at it
head as President. We have also
made progress upon the Somerset
! Branch. The line from Uniontown to
Fairmount, upon the Baltimore and i
Ohio Road, is also receiving attention
That from Bridgeport to Bedford will
be located during the winter or early
next spring." .
The report of the Chief Engineer, B.
H. Eat robe, was then read, in which
wa- set forth in detail the progress of the ,
work on the entire line from Pittsburg
to Cumberland, from which it appears,
says tfep Pittsburg Gazette, that the
: work of construction on the eastern and •
! and unfinished end \ progressing very j
favorably. ,
A farmer living near Milwaukee,
while driving houie the other night, i
j saw a meteor fall with great ripidity.
It struck a muddy spot, scattering
mud to a great distance. Ou examin
ation it was found to have made a hole
as large as a barrel. He dug it out
i while still warm and emitting sulphu- I
rons odor*. It resembled lava.

CATHARTIC PILLS,
For all the purpose.- of a Laxative Medicine
Terhaps no one Medicine is so universally re
quire! by everybody as a cathartic, nor was ever
any before fv universally adopted into u?. in ev
ery country and among all classes, ES this mild
bet efficient purgative Fill. The obvious reason
is. that it is amort reliable and far more effectual
remedy than any other. Those who have tried it. 1
know that it cured them, those who have not.
kr.-w that it cures their neighbors and friends,
and all know that what it doe* .mce it does always
i —that it never fails through any fault or neglect
of its composition We have thousands upon thou- I
sands of certificates of their remarkable cures of
the following complaints, but such cures are known
in every neighburh -od. and we need not publish
them Adapted to all ages and conditions in ail
climates: containing neither calomel or any dele
terious drug they may be taken with safety by
anybody. I heit'sngar coating preserves them ev- j
er'freah arc makes them pleasant to take, while
being purely vegetable r.- harm can arise from ;
their use in any quantity
They operate by their powerful influence on the
internal viscera to purify the blood and stimulate
it into healthy action—remove the obstructions of i
the stomach, bowels, liver, and other organs of tba
body. restoring tbeir irregular action to health, \
and by correcting, wuerever tbey exist, such I
derangements as are the first origin of dise.a-c.
Minute directions are given in the wrapper on j
the box, for the following complaints, which these j
Pills rapidly cure :
For DrspspsiA or ISI>IESTIOS. LISTLESSNESS. j
LAXGCOR and Lose of Appetite, they should be 1
taken UI J ierateiy to stimulate the stomach and :
restore its healthy tone and action.
For LIVER COXI'LAIST and its varioussymptoms, j
BILLIOCS HEADACHE SICK HEADACHE. JACXDICB J
or Greeu SICKNESS. Bilious Colic and Bilious Fe- j
vers, they should be judiciously taken for each j
case, to correct the diseased action or remove the ;
: obstructions which cause it.
For DTSENTKBV or DIARRBCEA, tut one mild j
dose is generally required.
For KaeciiATlSM. Gorr. (JBAVEL. PALPITATION !
OF THE HEART. PAIS IS THE SIDE, BACK and i
Loiss. they should be continuously taken, as re- j
j quired, to change the diseased action of the sys- ;
■ tern. With suet change those complaints disap- j
pear.
For L'L .ii and DaorsiCAL SWELLINGS they '
should be taken in large and frequent doses to j
; produce the effect of a drastic purge.
For SrpFßESsios a large do-e should be taken :
as it produces the desired effect bv sympathy.
As a DINNER PILL, take one or two pills to pro
mote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and •
bowels into healthy action, resturei the appetite, j
and invigorates th . aystcu Hence it is often ad
j vantageous where no'serious derangement exists. \
One who feela tolerablv well, often findsthat adose :
