FASHION.—The fashion for coats this fall is a good ileal like that of last fall, particularly with those who are com pelled to wear last fall's coats. G. R. OsTKii & Co. have just receiv ed a large assortment of Ladies', Misses' and Children's superior cus tom-made Boots and Shoes. Call and see. They speak for themselves. sep3om 1. We have received the October num ber of Peters' Musical Monthly, which is fulJ of choice music, both instrumen tal and vocal- This is decidedly the best and cheapest Musical Monthly published, and should be in the hands of every lover of music. Now is the time to subscribe. Address J. L. Pe ters, 196 Broadway, New York. Price, only $3.00 per annum. WATCH FOR COUNTERFEITS.— A new grist of $lO counterfeit greenbacks have been set afloat throughout the State. This last issue is so well execu ted, and so 'close an imitation of the genuine, that professional 'experts can hardly detect the difference. The letter P., to Pay the. bearer , has an up stroke; in the genuine it has none. The fine lines which form the shading around the Eagle's head in the vign ette, are coarse and scratchy compared with the genuine. RAILROAD COMMITTEE. —The Pres ident of the late railroad meeting has appointed the following gentlemen a committee to solicit subscriptions: Isaac Mengel, Daniel W&shabaugh, Job M. Shoemaker, William Chenc weth and John R. Jordan. These men are known as active business men, and we trust that they will give this important matter their earnest atten tion. If the proper efforts are made, a railroad to Bedford will soon be a fixed fact. DEMOREST'S YOUNG AMERICA.— The November number of this popular lit tle publication has just reached us, and is decidedly the best number that has been issued. Opening the bright cover, edabeautiful bird.asupplement to the Magazine, worth its cost The departments for the children,' he "Lit tle Housekeeper" and the "Young Farmer" are excellent. In fact, the entire contents are just such as are cal culated to please and instruct the ju veniles. It is the best investment for $1.60 that we know of. Published at 838 Broadway. A Bill has already been introduced in the Tennessee Legislature providing for the calling of a constitutional Con vention, to beheld in November, for the purpose of forming a new constitu tion repealing the present outrageous instrument which was made by the carpet-baggers, under military protec tion and in obedience to the prompt ings of Northern Radicals, in defiance of the will of the Tennessee people. That such a convention will be held and such a new Constitution formed and adopted by the people, we have no doubt. The liberties of Tennessee require this, and we hope to see it done as soon as possible. The other South ern states, we doubt not, will soon do likewise." PETROLEUM AS FUEL. —Apparatus for generating steam in stationary en gines, or those 011 steamboats or loco motives, by the use of crude petroleum fur fuel lias been in operation in Wash ington city for a month, and i> at last pronounced a complete by engi neers and machinists. The petroleum is evaporated and burned in the lur nace in the form of gas. Perfect safety from accidental fire is claimed. Ihe inventor maintains that with this ap paratus he can get up as much steam power with two gallons of petroleum as is usually gotten with a ton of good coal ; that is, he can run a locomotive or steamship as far and as fast with one ! barrel of oil as with fifteen tons of coal. ' and with much more convenience and 1 safety. The application of the inveu ; tion to driving the machinery of a foundry in Washington is to be made to day, for the benefit of officers of the Navy Department, who are to report officially upon it. DEMOREST'S MONTHLY.—Th isand a sewing-machine is beginning to be con sidered indispensable by young house keepers and ladies generally ; but the Monthly must be had, whether the sewing machine is or not. One of the great things in its favor is, that gen tlemen like it. They find it sensible instead of frivolous, full of practical in formation and useful ideas, which save your.g and inexperienced wives and mothers any amount of trouble and ex pense. The illustrations and patterns, the music and other departments, are each worth the cost, and we advise husbands who want to do a really good thing for their wives, themselves, and the family generally, to send $3.00 to 833 Broadway, N. Y., immediately. BARN BLRNED.—The barn of Ad am C. I liehl, of Napier township, wts burned about noon 011 Monday ! with all its contents, consisting of hay, grain Ac. The loss is estimated at i2O!X). Nothing definite is known as I to the origin of the fire. Mr. Diehl was away from home at the time and only arrived to find his barn in ashes. This is a serious misfortune for Mr. ; Diehl as he had just purchased the 1 property last spring and was labor ing hard to secure a home for himself 1 and family, and could ill afford the heavy loss that has so suddenly fallen upon him. We bespeak for him kind ly sympathy anil assistance of all who have it in their power to encourage and assist him. — Inquirer.
