SEGARS !— Segsirs to suit all tastes anil pocket books of all men, at Grouse's Segar and Tobocco Store, Pitt street. Mr. C. C. Meyers, who went to the West from East Providence, last Spring, died very suddenly, in Mis souri, last week. So far our summer has been a very pleasant one, but there have been none of the extremely warm days that is generally the case—when mercury gets boiling over and we poor mortals run away in perspiration. The Income Tax Law expires by limitation after one more annual pay ment. Whether it will be continued or repealed is an opeu question —both sides being supported by strong advo cates. _____ ST. Pacification, Golden Cloud, Sweet 18, Fruits of Flowers, Durham, Virginia's Choice, Volocipede, Apricot, Jenny, and other brands of popular tobacco, at Grouse's. Sign of the Indian, Pitt street. IN TOWN.— Judge Findlay, Valentine Hay, A. T. Ankeny, J. P. Philson, and A. Dunham, Esqs., are in town at tending the Senatorial and Legislative conferences. They are all capital "Frosty sons," and their faith in De mocracy is unbounded. Prothonotary Robison, Dr. W. S. Wishart, James Wishart and Abner Hess, Esqs., rep resent "Little Fulton," and represent her well, too. PERSONAL. — Bob Barker of the firm of Barker, Moore A Mein, successors to the well known firm of T. Morris Perot A Co., Phila., is in town, and in tends to call on the merchants of this county generally. Bob is a capital fel low, and our business men can do no better than patronize the firm of which he is a member. The new firm is selling the famous "First National White Lead," which has gained such a well known repu tation. IN MEMORIUM.— Mr. Thomas Saupp, formerly a typo of this office, died the other day in Kansas City, after a long and severe illness. Our young friend emigrated to the West shortly after serving his time in the GAZETTE office, and had succeeded, by untiring indus try, in establishing himself in a lucra tive business. But the grim monster, Death, sought hiin for a victim, and he has gone to "that bourne from whence no traveler e'er returns." We deeply sympathize with the widowed mother, brothers and sisters. Peace to his ashes! RECIFE TO SAVE MONEY.— Don't buy on "tick," thus being tempted to buy more than you can pay for readi ly, and always "dead broke" after pay ing such debts off, but go to H. F. Ir vine's boot, shoe, queensware, glass ware, grocery and notion store, No. 2 Anderson's Row, where you can buy only for cash, and at much lower rates than when you buy on credit, you will be sure to save a considerable sum of money in the course of one year. Try it. About eighteen years ago Isaac Mar tin and family emigrated to Michigan, leaving a son, Barnard Martin, in Southampton township, Bedford coun ty. Since then they have not heard definitely from him. Any persons knowing of his whereabouts or what has become of him will confer a great favor upon his aged parents by com municating the same to Isaac Martin, Kohisonville, Bedford county, l*a. DUBLIN TOWNSHIP AHEAD.—Big gest Snake of the Season.— Our Dublin township correspondent sends us word that a youhg man by the nume of Rush Benedict, residing in said town ship, some time since killed a black snake which measured 12 feel in length. We have noticed some of our ex changes bragging over what they call ed big snakes, but havn't seen any thing to cope with the above, in Ful ton county we think nothing of such snakes.— Fulton Democrat. SENATORIA L CONFERENCE.— The Democratic con forces of the Senatorial District, composed of the counties of Somerset, Bedford and Fulton, met at the Mengel House, in Bedford, on Tuesday, Aug. 17, and organized by the appointment ot J. After a number of ballots, Hiram Findlay, Esq., of Somerset, was unani mously declared to be the nominee. ■ ■■ -- - ♦ LEGISLATIV K CONFERENCE.— The Democratic conferees of the Legislative district, composed of the counties of Somerset, Bedford anil Fulton, met at the Mengel House, iu Bedford, 011 Tues day, Aug. 17, and organized by ap pointing Hon. James Burns, President, and Valentine Hay, Esq., Secretary. The following conferees were present. Somerset —Valentine Hay, A. T. An keny and J. P. Philson. Bedford— James Burns, John J. Sehaeffer, Esq., which was read and ordered to be incorporated in the pro ceedings: BEDFORD, PA., Aug. 17, 1869. To the Democratic Conferees of Bed ford, Fulton and Somerset Counties: GENTLEMEN:— I respectfully with draw my name for nomination for the Legislature and suggest the name of Hon. Joseph B. Noble, a gentleman of sterling integrity and a faithful demo crat. I shall ever gratefully remember the kindness of my friends in presenting my name, and assure them I shall never cease to feel a deep interest in the success of the gallant Democracy of Bedford county. Very Trulv, Yours, W. C. SCHAEFFER. The nominations of Hon. Joseph B. Noble and Captain Thomas Sipe were then made unanimous. On motion the conference adjourned. $5.00 REWARD.— The above reward, we understand, lias been offered by the political friends of John Cessna for any information that will lead to the discovery of the little fellow. Their uneasiness has been caused by the fail ure of the late Radical County Con vention to mention the catamountain member in their resolutions. They seem to have lost sight of him alto gether. And though lost to sight, he is not to memory dear. Poor lost John ! P. S. —Five dollars is as much as they consider John worth. If the finder wants more, he can keep his secret to himself. — Chambershury Valley Spirit. DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.— On yes terday week, a very sail accident hap pened in Licking Creek township, which cast a gloom over the whole neighborhood. Two young men, sons of Mr. Frauk Si pes, of said township, were engaged in hauling bark and in coming down a hill, the younger, a lad about 11 years of age, was walking be side the wagon, and it is supposed slip ped and fell, when the wagon passed over his head crushing it in and kill ing the boy instantly. The elder brother, aged about 19 years, was dri ving and did not know anything ofthe accident until he had gone some dis tance when he looked back and saw his brother lying In the road dead.— Fulton Democrat. RlOT.— Juliana street was the scene of a sanguinary conflict between the two races, on Monday last. The weap ons, offensive and defensive, were stones, and these missiles were thrown around with a recklessness that made it unsafe to be within "stones throw" of the belligerent parties. A few bloody heads, terrible curses—loud anil deep—and no little excitement, and the affair wound up. We are sorry to state that a Utile boy came near being made an innocent victim by a stray stone. He was severely cut about the face, The riot commenced near Harris' corner, but as there are so many con flicting stories as to how it originated, we withhold comment. We would merely suggest, however, that throw ing stones on one of our thoroughfares is by no means a healthful recreation, and should not be indulged in by any one. If exercise of that kind is need ed, base ball is much better, and even that often results in bone bruising. H. An archeological investigation of the country around Gettysburg, conducted by a learned antiquarian, has proved the truth of a belief long entertained by residents that the battle field of Gettysburg had, in the distant past, been the scene of a bloody struggle be tween the Indians or some unknown or long extinct race. This fact is at tested by the exhumation of the mil itary implements of the combatants and the remains of the dg3d in what is known as the Indian field, about a mile southwest of Round Top and of the National Cemetery. These relics are found thickly imbefleij in thesoii over the whole area of territory which was the scene of the battles in 1863. They consist of stone arrow-heads, battle axes, war clubs, shields, Ac. Some of them have been disinterred from their tomb of centuries and plac ed on exibition in the college for the present. A hugh landslide occurred near Stockport, in Columbia county, New York, on Monday of last week. The eartn caved to a distance of eighty feet, and the surface moved six hundred feet, carrying trees and fences with it, and leaving thorn upright and in good order on their new site. Some of the weaker trees were snapped or twisted. The movement occupied half an hour, being very gradual, and no noise was heard until the mass struck the base of a hill with a crash like thunder. A fissure deep beyond sounding has ap peared near the sunken portion of land, and fears are entertained that another slide may occur. Thousands of people have visited the scene of the phenom enon, and great excitement exists in Stockport. At a little place called Ilcathville, in Northumberland county, Va., last \yeek, a riot occurred between whites and blacks, ip the course of which a negro was killed by a sailor. Everybody has suffered so much from the aocursed CREDIT SYSTEM, if system it can be called, that I intend to offer to every body a panacea for the evil in the future. On and after the first day of June, 1809. I will sell goods EXCLUSIVELY FOR CASH OR PRO DUCE. No doubt some customers may be lost to me, but I flatter myself that it will be only thoso from whom I cannot collect present accounts. All goods will be sold at about one-half the profit now pa'd by consumers. The people often complain of Bedford prices being higher than else where, and it is doubtless true, to some extent, for the reason that good customers have had to pay for others' goods with an additional profit on their own. Let an intelligent community sustain me in this enterprise and they WILL SAVE FROM TEN TO FIFTEEN PER CENT. ON EVERYTHING THEY CONSUME. mayllmJ H. F.
