The attention of bridge builders is directed to the advertisement of the j Commissioners, in another column. ; The "spook" excitement remains un- j abated. It is estimated that several ! thousand have already visited the "old log house." Never before have our hill-sides, heaths and hollows yielded such enor mous quantities of all kinds of ber ries. J. B. Cessna, Esq., succeeded in out witting the candidates in Fulton coun ty for State Senator. He carried the slay handsomely. Bully for Boon! The brick work on Shoemaker's mammoth house has been commenced. The building is to be 133 by 36, and three stories high. Wonderous weather we are enjoying. July jumped out of existence as cool as a coquette's farewell—and August ap pears in an air as ambient as if exhal ed from the lips of October. OH! FOR A TOPlC !—Newspaper paragraphists are in agony for want of some new article of female dress to lampoon. The paniers, high heeled boots, Grecian bend, jockey hat and homeopathic bonnet, were long since exhausted as subjects of wit. Cannot the sex invent something new and startling? LUNCH. —Said Jones to us the other day, "I have just eaten the best lunch I ever got in Fed ford." Of course he had been at Edsall's Restaurant, whefe elegant ham sandwiches, cold chicken as tender as the touch of a fair maiden, and eggs cooked to tickle the palate of the most fastidious, can be had at all hours. Everything to be had in a tip-top restaurant will be found there. The best of Lauer's ale al waj son hand Call and be convinced. NOW IS THE ACCEPTED TIME.— The yellow slip of paper pasted on each subscriber's GAZETTE contains his name and a date. The date indicates from what time he owes us for the pa per, and as our terms are $2 in advance and $2.50 if not paid within the year, he knows exactly how much to remit us. Come forward, friends, just now is the accepted time, and send at once the amount you owe us and you will receive the printer's blessing. We stand greatly in need of the money yon owe us, as we must pay our paper hills, Ac., in cash, (and they are not small like the hills due us for the paper), and unless our patrons pay us punctu ally, we must borrow the money to en able us to send them the GAZETTE.— Come, roll in, tumble it;, and don't be afraid to pay the printer, especially you who are indebted to us from 'laug&V 'ISoctG-v 'iaugiHi,' 'laug67,' and other 'ancient' datoa. THE ECLIPSE.— Next to the great "spook" excitement, nothing received so much attention here as the eclipse on Saturday last. More of our jieople were observed casting their eyes heav enward, than are generally supposed to be gazing to that celestial place. Those who were unaccustomed to peer ing into the bine ethereal had to be as sisted by something to aid the vision. Smoked glass was in active demand, and the supply seemed unlimited. We noticed one enthusiastic youth, in his eagerness to catch a glimpse of the e eiipse, smash a large window pane, and attempt to smoke one of the frag ments with the "pipeof peace,"anoth er tried to view the phenomenon of nature by the "light of other days;" and a third insisted he could see the e clipse by placing a basin of water on the ground. We record all these as complete failures. Smoked glass, after all, was the only thing through which to behold the be-clouded disc of the day's luminary. The eclipse was a complete success, and reflects great credit on those know ing chaps who for some time past have been pointing to the exact time when it would make its appearance. 'Tis sad to reflect, however, that a great many who looked upon it on .Saturday hist will never more behold such a sight, for we are told that no eclipse of the sun will again occur during the present century. NEW COUNTERFEIT.— A new coun terfeit ten dollar greenback has made its appearance, and is pronounced by bankers and United States treasurers the finest executed counterfeit ever thrown upon the community. At first glance it seems to be a perfect imita tion of the $lO greenback, and the printing seems to have been done from the original plate, but there are points of difference which are thus noted: — In the original the shading around the 10 in the" medallion appears like a fine network, and runs close up to the fig ures. In tiie counterfeit note this shading is "picked up," and becomes coarse as it reaches the figures, forming a light streak or a circular haze simi lar to that about the moon before rain. There is no haze in the genuine note. This is a slight point for detection. A clearer one is the fact that in the orig inal notes, within the light circle run ning under the figures 10, there are three and a third dots on the left of the figure 1. In the counterfeit bill the one third dot ismissing. But an infallible mark of distinction is found under the left wing of the eagle. In the genuine notes are four distinct rows of feathers under thewing. In the counterfeit these rows of feathers are undefined, and this seems to be theonly weak spot in the whole engraving. The public will do well to exercise caution in re ceiving notes of this denomination. SUDDEN DEATH.— We are pained to record the sudden death of Dr. John Morrison, on Wednesday morning last, at his residence in this borough. The Doctor was a native of this borough, was aged about seventy-two years, and was extensively and favorably known throughout the State as UH intelligent, urbane gentleman of the old school. Ilis disease was apoplexy. He has been in feeble health for several years, anil only returned last week from his annual visit to Bedford Springs, apparently greatly improved in health and vigor of body. On Tues day evening last we conversed with him, when he appeared cheerful. On Wednesday morning he was seized with apoplexy, and in a short time was a corpse. He was in affluent cir cumstances, and unmarried. Greens burg Aryus. Dr. Morrison was well known in this community, having been a regular summer visitor for a number of years. He was highly esteemed and beloved by all who knew him, and his sudden death .is deeeply regretted by many with whom he associated but a few days ago, in Bedford. May his ashes rest in peace.' GOOD ADVICE. —Let our possessions I be what they may—marble palaces, broad lands, magnificent plate, or cas kets of "precious stones"—they all sink in the balance against Heaven's great boon, health, and they cannot be en joyed without it. And yet how little is it valued, and how carelessly pre served. The laws of nature cannot be violated with impunity. Night revel ry, luxurious living, irregularity of meals, and a disordered appetite, will gradually destroy the power and activ ity of the stomach. How many ladies and gentlemen eat and drink disease at late suppers, and arise in the morn ing with headache, loss of appetite, feeling languid and unrefreshed. There can be no medical remedy that will turn lead into food, or poisoned drinks into nutriment, but medical science can assist nature, supply exhausted flu ids, and to a great extent correct the effects of disease. In all cases such as the above, we recommend PLANTA TION BITTERS. You will find them just the thing—at the same time a most delicious tonic and appetizer. MAGNOLIA WATER.— Superior to the best imported German Cologne, and sold at half the price. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE IN PHILADEL PHIA.—One of the most destructive fires that ever visited Philadelphia, took place in that city on Wednesday night last. It began with the failing in of one of the bonded warehonses at Front and Lombard streets. The building was stored with whisky, which ran into the furnaces of the boilers, and caught tire, producing an explosion. The entire block of warehouses, eight in number, were destroyed. Some twenty-five thousand barrels of whis ky were stored in the building. The ioss is about three and a half million dollars, upon which there is an insur ance of one million and a half. MARRIED. JJer last illness was brief; though her , general health had been failing for some years past. She was a communicant in the Presbyteri an church of Bedford for more than 30 years. Her conduct and conversation were ordered in ac cordance with the gospel of the son of Hod. Her piety was seen in an humble meek and unob trusive demeanor. Those who knew her at home and among ber immediate neighbors and friends saw most of Christ in her life. Later years of infirmity detained her from the pubiic sanctuary. She made the word of God her daily and con stant study at home. She grew by these means, in the grace of God and in the knowledge ot the Lord Jssus Christ. Though death came measurably sudden, she was, nevertheless, ready, hor peace being mado with God, her calling and election were sure. For her to live was Christ and to die was infinite gain. Her husband, now in hit Slat year after having companioned with her in wedded life for near 3 score years, lingers on earth, awaiting his release from mortality that he may enter heaven, and enjoy with her the rest of the people of God Blessed arc the dead who die in the Lord.
