Bedford merchants are tilling full fine store rooms with well selected goods. See what they say in the ad \ ertising columns of the GAZETTE. 11 uso RY. —One of the nasty "organs" of radicalism, ofthiscounty, talks of de feating the excellent ticket nominated by the Democrats. Bah! "Polly wants a cracker!" The editor of the Fulton Democrat lost his umbrella. Served him right. What business has an editor to "sport" so great a luxury as a "gingham um brella." DIED OF DYPTJIERIA.— Mr. Enoch Hixon, near Emmaville, Fulton coun ty, lost four children in four weeks, by dyptheria. Mrs. Hixon narrowly es caped death from the same disease. ERRATUM.— In the County Sujierin tendent's report, published on our outside, under the head of "Institutes," the phrase, "the less inexperienced" should read "the leas experienced." FESTIVAL.—A festival under the auspices of the Schellsburg Lodge, No, 119, of Good Templars, on Friday and Saturday evenings, Junelßth and 19th. All are invited to attend. ■ • Bedford has long since needed a first class cigar and tobacco store. This want has been fuiiy supplied by D. W. Grouse, for at his Resort will be found such a variety as was never beheld be fore. According to a law passed by the last Legislature, all sewing machines be longing to seamstresses are exempt from levy and sale, on execution or distress for rent. Christian Albright, an old and re spected citizen, aged about 72 years, dropped dead, at his residence in Lon donderry township, this county, on Monday last, the 11th inst. BITTEN BY A COPPERHEAD.—A son of Mr. Kanavels, about four years old, was bitten on Saturday last, by one of those venomous reptiles, but under the efficient treatment of Dr. Trout, of this place, bids fair to recover.— Fulton Re publican. SOME SNAKES.— The Mountain City Tin,' Cumberland, says that a party of workmen employed in barking trees in that county near Gilpintown, have killed the extraordinary number of st rerifg-two rattlesnakes this spring. There must be a good crop of snakes o ver there, this year. - - DASTARDLY OUTRAGE. —We learn lliat on last Sabbath some scaly scoun drel-broke into the Bald Hill church, in Snake Spring township and took vari ous articles therefrom. The perpetra tor- of this act of vandalism should be ferreted out and punished to the full extent of the law. This is the second or third time that this church has been robbed. A RAN DALE HOUSE.— This pleasant house has l>een greatly improved, in ;<)<• and out, since last season. The proprietor, Mr. Joseph Alsip. has left nothing undone that could add to the comfort and convenience of his guests. Visitors will find the Arandale a very pleasant place to spend the summer months. FATAL ACCIDENT IN COLERAIN.— < m last Thursday, at si barn raising, in Colerain township, while the rafters were being put up, one of them slipped and struck Mr. Jonathan Diehl, knock ing him to the ground and killing him almost instantly. The day before a I'. Kngland met with sin accident, at 'hi - uiie building, by which one of his ankles was dislocated. Am. is VANITY.— No doubt many "four readers have often seen the time when they could fully agree with Hans Iheituian in saying: "Oh, vol ish ail (lis earthly pliss ? All ho goods he sells cheap and fast.— 1 re is still room for more customers and all are invited to call and see his unrivalled stock of goods. " SEVERELY INJURED.— We are sorry to learn that on last Friday, Hugh Moore, Esq., our candidate for county Treasurer, was seriously injured, in the following manner : he was leading a horse to water when the animal reared and struck hiin with such force as to crush him to the ground. Mr. Moore had his left shoulder knocked out of place and sustained severe injur ies in the back. Under the skillful treatment of Dr. Reamer, we learn that the injured man is improving. NOTICE.— AII persons who have found money supposed to have been disposed of by the burglars of the hank at Clearfield, either at the place of their arrest or on their way from Centreville to Bedford, who have not al-ready done so, are requested to report the same to Sheriff Steekman, or District Attor ney E. F. Kerr, n or before Saturday next, with proper affidavits to the fact as the trial of defendants is expected to take place, at Clearfield, next week. D. W. MOORE, Cash. o. Nat. Bank, Clearfield. TOUCHINGLY TRUE. —The Mobile Advertiser and Register says: "We do not remember to have read a poein more sweetly sympathetic and more touchingly true, than the following. It is brief, but its brevity detracts nothing from its beauty. Let every man who has a heart in his bosom, every gentle matron who would have a peaceful home, and every single man who would "go and do likewise," see what is OWED TO PRINTERS. When luckless printers stoop to credit, And fiod too late that men won't pay — What charms can soothe the scribes who edit ? What art can wash the doubt away ' The only art their case can better, To wring the money when 'tis due, To give repentance to the debtor, And wring his pockets—is to sue. PAINFUL ACCIDENT. —We regret to announce that our friend, Capt T. H. Lyons, met with a very severe accident, in Londonderry township, on Friday last, and narrowly escaped with his life The horse he was riding became un manageable and ran away with him, unhorsing the Captian and throwing him with great violence against a tree. His injuries are of a serious character, and it will be some time before he will be in a condition to he removed to his home. • -w~ - FOURTH OF JULY.— WiII Bedford celebrate the 4th of July? That is a question we hear asked frequently, but no one seems to know enough about it to give an affirmative answer. Ev erywhere arrangements are being made for the "glorious Fourth," while not a word is said in favor of doing the same here. Shall we have a good old fash ioned time on "the day we celebrate," on not? That's the question. Let some one move in this matter. We notice that at most places, Saturday has been fixed upon for the celebration, as the 4th comes on Sunday. Tiie OTHER BURGLAR CAPTURED. —We learn by the Clearfield Republi can that the third member of the band of bold burglars who robbed the Clear field County National Bank, was ar rested, last week, and lodged in the Clearfield jail. He was secured in Sf. Louis, by D, W. Moore, Esq., cashier of the bank, and Mr. James Tracy, a detective of that city. No money was found on his person. He was arrest ed at his house. His wife, who until recently did not know, what kind of business her husband was prosecuting, is said to be an excellent woman and a niece of Ex-Senator Henderson, of Mis souri. Cresson and Bedford Springs will be opened for guests on the 15th Inst. Hollidaysburg, a healthier, and pleas anter, place than either, is open all the time.—Hollidaysbu rg Sta nda rd. That is the toughest piece of blowing we have encountered for many a day, Bro. Traugh. '"Hollidaysburga health ier and pleasanter place than Bedford !" Pshaw! You are only joking. The keenest optics in the world could not discover even the outlines of that point. That Hollidaysburg is "open all the time," there can be no doubt. So long as health and pleasure seeking folks have a place like Bedford to come to, with her enchanting scenery, purest of air and health-giving water*, Holli daysburg, no doubt, will remain "open" for all time to come. CHURCH CONSECRATION IN FRIENDS COVE.— Trinity Reformed Church of Friends Cove, this county, was forma* ly dedicated to the worship of the Triune God, on Sunday, June 6th, 1869. The day wa charming and the house was crowded to its utmost ca pacity, and many were unable to ob tain admittance. The services were conducted according to the beautiful Order of Worship of the Reformed Church. The church edifice is certain ly one of the finest and most handsome in Bedford county. It is pleasantly located on an elevation in what is termed the lower end of Friends Cove, about five miles south-east from Bedford, on ground donated for the purpose by Mr. Isaac Diehl. The building is' fifty-six feet in length and thirty-five in breadth. The audience chamber is twenty feet in the clear, that is, from floor to ceiling, and furnished with a choir gallery. A sweet-toned 3leneoly bell, weighing upwards of four hun dred pounds, occupies a place in the handsome cupola. The architects, Messrs John Shafer, David Dibert and Abraham Barnhart, as well as the pas tor and membership of the congrega tion, have cause for congratulation in their success. The whole expense of building and furnishing this truly beautiful church, we learn, was less than forty-five hundred dollars. On the morning of consecration a debt of nineteen hundred dollars was still res ting upon it. This was fully provided for, the offerings of the people amount? ing to almost two thousand dollars. The church was thus given to Vcn\,free of debt, as should always be the case. The pastor, the Rev. Wm. M. Deat rick, was assisted in these solemn and interesting services by the Rev. Dr. Gerhart, Rev. H. Heckerman, Rev. N. H. Sfcyles, and liev. C. U. lleil man. fp&f iSeSJCliurSj,* p- EDITORIAL JOY.— The editor of the Clarion Democrat added eight paying subscribers to his list and took in over two hundred dollars worth of filthy lu cre, in one week! That was a printers' "take" not to be sneezed at. Whereupon the editor aforesaid be cometh so elated that he imagines himself immensely rich, and talks of getting a power press and enlarging his paper! Talks about the "Clarion Notes" — thereby meaning his greenbacks—and becomes elevated to such a high key generally, as to indite two lines of po etry—regular square-toed, unmistaka ble poetry of "dollars and dimes." Just see what effect a little mon ey has upon poor editors! They cannot stand the pressure of a sudden greenback inflation. They are not equal to the emergen cy, and when it coineth they are over whelmed, muchly. We were overcome, the other day, at the sight of a few stamps which a friend had borrowed to make his "ends meet." But the stamps did not come over to us, and the sequel was sadness. We once heard of a man who was so deeply affected by suddenly becoming possessed of a large sum of money that he drew himself away from it by means of a cord ! The "cords of money" were too ma ny for him and a constitutional weak ness made him Hop. We have no instance to record of an editor being similarly affected. Such glorious sigh's are hidden from their eyes. Perhaps it is well that this is thusly, for an editor is human and "a man for a' that." But to think ! An editor getting through the third sand rock with the pick of patient perseverance and stri king—two hundred dollars! Verily, there is joy in the sanctum when dunned delinquents rally to the rescue of the poorly paid printer! How the heart of the printer leapetli with joy at the sight of a farthing that is honestly due him ! All printers are proverbially honest. Early "impressions" have made them so. It a "rule" with them that is never broken, neither is the type thereof ever knocked into "pi." To ouit DELINQUENT SUBSCRIBERS. —Weask our subscribers, everywhere, to oblige us by the prompt payment of their accounts. Our business is all cash, and that, in almost every in stance, in advance. Will not those wlto havo taken the paper from Aug. 1865, 1866, 1867 and IS6S, see the im portance of paying for it, as we have earned our money, and not only need it, but must have it. By referring to our terms on the first page of tfie GA ZETTE and the yellow slip of paper pasted on their paper every week with their name and date, (which gives the month and year their paper is paid to), shows at once how much is due us, which amount they should at once pay into the office, or remit us by mail, without delay. Every man who takes our paper and has not paid, knows that he justly owes for it, and should not .subject the proprietors to the trouble and expense of sending, writing or dunning him, but should and would if he were morally honest, take pleasure in doing as ho would others should do unto him. Friends, we appeal to your sense of honor, on the principle, that the inbor er is worthy of his hire. DOUBLY-DYED DEMONS. —Through the aid of 11. E. Thayer, Supt. Dink erton's National Detective Agency, Phila., the city authorities of Altoona have ferreted out the existence of a secret oath-bound organization in that city, composed of rude ruffians and burly blackguards joined together for the purpose of destroying property. The Vindicator says, "developements of the most astounding character have been made, and yet more startling are expected." A number of arrests have been made and parties, in default of heavy bail, have been lodged In jail, Members of one of the fire companies are implicated. This disclosure ac counts for the many fires that have occurred in that city of late. We have always thought iho destructive con flagrations in that place were to bp attributed to causes other than those of mere accident. We hope thescoun drels will meet with proper punish ment. 44 Where is DrakeS. T. 1860 X?" We have heard this question asked many times, and for all we knew for a year past he might be dead. Recent ly, in New York, we called at his Lab oratory in Liberty St., and there found this gentleman barricaded behind a tremendous pile of boxes distributing funds to a Sunday School Committee. Our business was to secure an adver tisement. He said: "3ly dear sir, what is the use of advertising the plantation Bitters? They sell better now than when I advertised at such enormous expense, and now I have not made a contract for a year. I have all this amount to give to the poor. To sat isfy the Press, however, who have al ways been my friends, I think I wid give you a little something to doagain, for I have improved the Bitters great ly, and it may be well to have you let the people know it." And so lie ran on in a happy, cordial, appreciative manner, showing us the wonders of his place and the cords of certificates. Everything is on a magnificent scale, and is done witli neatness and prompt ness. While there we saw at least for ty orders come in for these celebrated Bitlers. Cases were being shipped to the, four corners of tiie world. Drake js not dead, nor his Bitters either. — Fr change paper. I have been a martyr to Rheumatism For two months previous to Feb. 2ith, last, 1 was suffering intensely with pain so severe, tbat during all that time I had not one night of comfortable sleep. I could not put my hands to my face, could not comb my own hair, nor feed myself; but alter having the Pain Cure applied once, I found relief enough to give me comfortable sleep, and with its steady use, I continued to get better, and now at the end of ten weeks from its first application, I have comparatively free use of my hands, sleep well and can attend to business. It has done me more good than all other medicines I have ever used put together, and I cheerfully give this cer tificate of its value. EW M. EIsHER. BEDFORD, April 14, 1869. Mr. W W.
