RASCALLY.—A strenuous effort was
made, by certain narrow minded
leather-heads, to bring about the im
pression that the ceremonies of decor
ating the soldier's graves, on last Satur
day, was to be a political affair!—
Inquirer.
"Certain narrow minded leather-1
heads" did make arrangements to
wind up the ceremonies of the day,
with a political meeting, and the bills
for the same were printed at the In
(purer office, before the post comman
der of the G. A. R., of this place, in
vited the Democratic soldiers to par
ticipate in the affair. As soon as the
latter had consented to do so, the bills
were at once distributed and the clo
ven foot of the "narrow minded leath
er-heads" was apparent to every one.
These are the facts in the matter, and
we challenge the Inquirer men to deny
them. Had it not been for the ne
farious attempt to make political capi
tal of the sacred ceremonies of
the day, and turn the very graves in
to partisan account, the day would
have passed off harmoniously, as it
should have done. Does any one
doubt that the "narrow minded leath
er-hea Is" keep shop on Juliana street?
SERIOUS RAILROAD ACCIDENT. —On
last Friday morning, while a train of
loaded coal cars was passing over a
trestle bridge of the Broad Top railroad,
at Rough and Ready station, the tres
tle work gave way, precipitating the
entire train, except the engine, a dis
tance of fifty or sixty feet. Mr. Sam
uel Reed, brakesman, was buried be
neath the wreck and instantly killed,
and Alfred Houpt, also employed on
the train, had one of his shoulders dis
located, and sustained other serious in- !
jury. The engineer escaped by open
ing the valves of the engine, thus j
breaking it from the rest of the train.
One employee saved his life by jump
ing from one car to another till ho
reached the end of the train.
Since writing the above, we have in
formation from a correspondent, who
says, that the break in the trestle is
not so serious as was at first announced.
It is expected that the repairing would
be so far completed, by Thursday of
this week, so as to admit the passage
of trains, as usual, over the road.
KEEP COOL!— If any one is anxious
to see how the pulses of the Inquirer
men beat, on the Grant ratification fiz
zle, let him look at the last issue of
that delectable sheet. "Sap-suckers,"
"whelps," "leather-heads," "rascal
ly," "cowards," "copperheads," and
other choice selections from the fishwo
man's dictionary, adorn thecolumnsof
that "moral" sheet Keep cool, gen
tlemen, the thermometor isgtong up.
If you "goon" so now, at the outset of
the campaign, where will you be in
July and August, and where will you
land in November? A free applica
cation of ice may relieve you now. Try
it.

THE Commissioners hqye engaged
the services of Edward Havilland,
Esq., of York, Pa., to make plans,
specifications and working drawings
of the new alms house, about to be e
rected. Mr. Havilland has a reputa
tion, second to none in the State, as an
architect. The building is to be on the
same plan as the York county alms
house, which is considered a model, and
which was designed by tlie above named
_ gentleman.
ANOTHER FAILURE.— Last week we
advised the man who attempted to get
up a Grant ratification meeting, and
failed, to try something else. He took
our advice, and ran as delegate to the
Impeachers' county nominating con
vention, hut was again slaughtered in
the house of his friends. We will make
no further suggestions. Ungrateful
party! Unlucky man! Weshouldn't
be surprised if he attempted to be
chairman of the county committee.
Later.— He attempts—he fails.

The ladies, who attended the Han

That is some consolation lor you.
There is no occasion for being jealous
of the "Mrs. Surratt Nine" on that
score.

RADICAL COUNTY CONVENTION.—
The Radical Impeachers' Convention
met here on Tuesday last. A number
of districts were unrepresented, but,
fortunately, persons who happened to j
be about town, were picked up as dele
gates to til; up the convention. The
following nominations were made:.
Congress, John Cessna; Law Judge, I).
Watson Itowe: Legislature, J. H. I
Longenecker; Commissioner, Lewis j
A. May; Poor Director, J. M. Leh- j
man ; Coroner, C. L. Buck. The nom-'
iuation for Legislature was hotly con
tested, and resulted in again shelving
Capt. Stucky. J. W. Lingenfelter was
selected as chairman of the county
committee.

THE LOCUSTS.— The seventeen year
locusts are making thier appearance in
this neighborhood in great numbers.
The earth is perforated with their en
deavors to reach the surface. Vast
numbers of them have shed their cov
ering and commenced their vocal cad
ences. The last time these notable in
sects visited us was in 1851, and their
movements now are precisely similar. ■
In burrowing upwards they build up-'
on the top of the earth a habitation ve- >
ry much like that of a "mud wasp." j
In this "house" they remain until the j
proper time arrives to emerge from
their shell, when they at once perch j
themselves upon the branches of trees,
where they proceed to prepare for an
other generation. Who of us will live
to see their next arrival.
HURRlCANE.— Rainsburg and vicin- 1
ity was visited, on last Saturday even
ing, by one of the most severe storms
evur known in this region, amounting
almost to a western hurricane. In the
town the newly erected house of Eman
ual Swartzwelder was blown down,
the roof of the house of Baltzer Sheely
was torn off and carried away, while
fences were scattered in every direction.
In the woods adjoinging the borough
trees were torn up by the roots, or
snapped off like alder bushes by thei
violence of the storm.
THE NEW FIFTEEN CENT notes have
just been turned out by the printing
division of the Treasury. The notes!
are the same width, hut somewhat
shorter than the twenty-five cent notes.;
On the right side of the face is an ex
cellent vignette of General Sherman.
Between the vignettes are the words,
"fifteen cents," prominently displayed
and immediately beneath the figures
"15." The back is similar in appear
ance to that of the twenty-five cent
notes, with the denomination on
each end.
Two CHILDREN, a girl aged 13and a
boy aged 8 years, children of William
Garton, of Buckwheat Valley, Juniata
county, were burned to death on the
27th ult. The house caught fire about
12 o'clock at night, and the fire made
such headway that all efforts to rescue
them were unavailing.
WE see it stated in our exchanges,
that according to all accounts, the grass
crop of Pennsylvania will be the heav
iest this year cut for the last ten. If
there is anything in the old saying,
"a wet, damp spring for grass," it
ought to he.

WATSON—WHEREAS, the all Wise Ruler of the
universe, in His inscrutable provulence, has taken
from this world our Brother, DR. W. II WATSON ;
Therefore, Be it
Resolved, That we mourn with heartfelt and
unaffected sorrow the death of our beloved broth
er, who, not only as a member of this order, but
as a mac, a neighbor and a friend, was most
strongly and peculiarly endeared to us as an Odd
fellow. During the period of more than twenty-one
years that he was connected with this Lodge, he
beautifully illustrated the principles of our fra
ternity ; he was gratetul to his Creator, faithful
to his country and fraternal to his fellow man ;
whilst as a man, a neighbor, and a friend, he was
kind-hearted, generous, disinterested and self
sacrificing. He was an indulgent, loving father,
a most affectionate son, andn warm-hearted broth
er; but to the whole community, ourselves and
character of skilful and eminent physician and
our families, he was rendered most dear, in his
benevolent and sympathising attendant at the
sick bed of our loved ones. Who is not sorry that
our Brother, Doctor Wm. 11. Watson, is dead.
"None knew him but to love him
None nnmed him but to praise."
Resolved, That as a mark of respect for our de
ceased brother, the members of Bedford Lodge
will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty
days and will attend his funeral in a body.
Resolved , That our Hall be draped in mourn
ing for the period of thirty days.
Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be
