The Democrats of each district will al so select a Vigilance Committee for the ensuing year, and make return of the names to the President of the Conven tion. The Delegate Elections to be open from the hour of one o'clock, P. M., to the hour of 6 P. M. GEO. MARDORFF, Ch'n. Dem. Co. Com. W. C. SCHAEFFER, Sec'y. THE CAMPAIGN OPENED! Bedford County Awake! HANCOCK AND LIBERTY! Tin- l*>o|ile aroused ! Great Enthusiasm! I'owrrful ,S|eeehes, Ac. The campaign of 1868 opened auspiei-! ously in Bedford county, on last Satur-1 day night. A meeting was called for the purpose of congratulating the'coun try 011 the failure of the Impeachment farce; on the removal of the man Stanton, from the War Office who has been at the bottom of the late attempt ed outrage 011 the Constitution and lib erties of the people, and to express a preference for the Democratic Presi dential nomination. It was the most successful impromptu meeting held in Bedford for many a day. The balcony of the Mengel House, in front of which the meeting was held, was illumina ted, while overhead and across the street, hung beautiful flags, with a star for every State. On motion of E. F. Kerr, Esq., the meeting was organized by the election of the following officers: President, Capl. TIIOS. 11. LYONS. Vice Presi dents, W. 11. King, Lawrence Defi-; baugli, J. Clayton Brashear, W. M. Earnest. Joseph Mortimore, Philip Huzzard, A. 1). Koontz, Josiah Haley, Daniel Fletcher, W. M. Wisel, Isaac Earnest and J. T. Gephart. Secretar ies, W. W. Barclay, W. C. Schaffer and John Keeffe. The Band played "Red, White and Blue," after which Col. JOHN H. FIL- j LER was introduced amid the cheers of the crowd. He held the meeting for over onehour by one of his most forcible and logical speeches. He showed the danger the country was in, by running a man for President who had sixty battaliions of soldiers at his back, to help him carry ten States now pinned together by the bayonet. A party representing itself as the embodiment of the loyalty of the country was now lead by Butler and Logan, the one vot ing fifty-seven times for Jeff. Davis for President, and the other raising rebel troops and sending them across the Ohio into the Confederacy. But we will not attempt to give even an outline of his able effort. O. E. Shannon was called upon and responded in his Usual felicitous man- j ner. The greatest enthusiasm prevail-j ed, and the whole affair augurs well for j the success of the Democratic party in the coming contest. The meeting adjourned with three rousing cheers for HANCOCK. THE nomination ot Grant, and his J willingness to stand 011 the Chicago platform, falls on the people like a dead weight, and Hall's ratification meeting was in consequence a perfect fizzle. Cessna knew it, and to avoid the hu miliating spectacle of failure in at tempting to ratify a nomination he had helped to make, left town. Perhaps the fear that Hall might endeavor to prove, by holy writ, that slavery is a divine institution, kept many away; or, perhaps, the speech he had prepar ed for the April court meeting, and was prevented from making 011 account of a brother screecher talking "against time," was not considered worth lis tening to now. Who knows? At any rate, Hall should try his hand at something else, for evidently getting up ratification meetings is not his forte. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO THOSE HAV ING PIANO FORTES.—Mr. T. A. Salvo, the celebrated Piano Forte tuner, from new York, will remain in town a few days and all those who are desirous of having their Pianos put in good order and their Original Sweetness of Tone Restored to them as when they were new, can now improve the opportunity. Mr. S. has been in Huntingdon for the past four weeks tuning and lie re spectfully refers to B. M. Green, music dealer. Mr. Salvo has the highest ot testimonials from Professors of Music from New York and Pennsylvania. He will visit each Piano twice a year. Having given the highest satisfaction to all his customers he hopes for a continuance of the same. Ail orders left at the Gazette Office will be promptly attended to. GREAT GRANT GRATIFICATION ! Cold Comfort for Colfax ! I'll**, Feather*, Fizzle! We have seen many political fiascos and break-downs, in this town and elsewhere, but last Saturday night when the Impeachers attempted to hold a Grant and Colfax ratification meeting in the court house, "topped the climax." The day set apart to perform the mournful duty of decorating the graves of the dead soldiers, was selected as the most fitting occasion for open ing the political ball of 1868. Whether this was done with the connivance of the post commander of the G. A. R., we are not prepared to say, but we do know, that the originators of the j scheme met with merited rebuke. It was the most complete failure vve ever saw. Due notice of the pow-wow had been given, the court room was lit up, the bell was rung once, twice, and the j janitor was waiting patiently for the Impeachers to make their appearance. At last one came and ordered the lights to be put out as they had concluded to hold the meeting in a room down stairs. They did hold it there, and such a meeting of a once powerful par ty ! A few office-seekers, a few rene gade Democrats—men who are still clinging to the rotten timbers of the decayed old ship of Radicalism, whilst the honest crew is coming ashore as fast as they can leave the wreck—were all that could be mustered together under the leadership of the great Grant, backed by the patent extension platform lately manufactured at Chica go. One who made an actual count," informs us that there were not enough present to act as pall-bearers to the de funct body of the great Radical party, late of Washington City, deceased. Alas ! how have the mighty fallen ! OUGHT TO RE COURT MARTIALED. —The Commander of this post of the G. A. R. ought to investigate the eon duct of the parties who tried to get up a Grant and Colfax ratification meet ing ou last Saturday night. What right had the latter to interfere with the ceremonies of the former, by at tempting to wind up the proceedings of the day with a political harangue on the virtues of the nominees of the Chicago convention? The Grand army of the Republic, with John A. Logan as bead-center, is one thing, and the Rad ical party with Washburne, Butler and Logan as its leaders, is quite another. Don't everybody see it? According to tiie "sedentary" remarks of Gov. Gea ry, whose name has become a "syno nym" in the gubernatorial chair, those fellows "ought to be drumhead court martialed and shot!" The nasty politicians! STRUCK BY LIGHTNING —On last Wednesday we were visited by a se vere thunder storm, some of the fatal effects of which, so far as they have come to our knowledge, we give to our readers: In Juniata tp., while Mr. Joseph Goon was in the act of unhitching his horses from the plow, he was struck by lightning, the two horses instantly killed, and himself so severely injured that no hope is entertained of his recov ery. Strange to say, a sucking colt was with the horses at the time and escaped unhurt. In this borough, James Curboy, Jr., who was standing near his stable with a shovel iu his hand, was knocked down, but beyond being stuuned for a while, sustained no serious Injury. In Bedford tp., the new brick house of Charles Stuckey, was struck, a chim ney demolished and the house other wise damaged. DECORATING SOLDIERS' GRAVES.— According to notice given, the survi ving soldiers of the late war, met at the Court House, on Saturday last. The' turnout was not so large as was antici pated. The meeting was called to or der by selecting the following named officers:—President, Capt. Adam Weaverling; Vice Presidents, Lt. John Keeffe, George Stiffler and B. A. Coop er. Secretaries, Corp. W. W. Barclay and Serg. \V. Bolinger. Committee on Resolutions. Capt. Thos. H. Lyons, Corp. J. T. Keagy and Corp. James Over. While the Committee were out, J. 11. Longenecker, Esq., addressed the meeting in a few remarks perti nent to the occasion, after which the soldiers formed into line in front of the court house, and preceded by a band of music, inarched to the several cem eteries about town and decorated the graves of their fallen comrades with evergreen wreaths and flowers. HUNG HIMSELF.—On last Friday morning, the body of a man was found hanging on the limb of a fallen tree, near the turnpike, about two miles west of Bloody Run. The limb on which he had chocked himself to death, was about four and a half feet from the ground. John A. Gump, Esq., sum moned a jury and held an inquest over the remains. From his passport, found on his person, we learn that he was born in Prussia, iu 1821, and that he left that count y in November last. His name was Frederick Klein man ; What led him to commit the rasli deed, no one will ever know. IMPORTANT TO SOLDIERS OF THE WAR OF 1812.—The Auditor General is now prepared to furnish parties with blanks and instructions for obtaining pensions for the old soldiers of the war of 1812 and their widows, authorized by the reviving act of the last Legisla ture. Applicants must have served at least two months, or been disabled, or have engaged in actual battle in said war, and must not be worth over SSOO in property, real or personal. Parties who received a gratuity under the act of 18G6, repealed by the act of 18G7, will notbe entitled to a continuation of their annuity of S4O. Settlement will not be made until the first of July, by which time all claims filed, will he ad judicated by the Auditor General. HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS.— We are accustomed to make short stories with the numerous traveling agents for "specific" remedies, pills, hitters, and quack nostrums, general ly, who seek to use our columns for the purpose of humbugging the public and filling their own pockets ; and vve propose to pursue the same course in future, excluding all such advertise ments of questionable character. We give place to the advertisement of Hoofland's German Bitters, which oc cupies a column elsewhere, because from personal experience in their use, we know the bitters to be a valuable medicine ; and while we are not pre pared to say that they will effect a cure of all diseases for which they are re commended, we cheerfully testify their value as a remedy for diseases of the liver, general debility, dyspepsia, and all complaints arising from a disorder ed condition of the stomach and di gestive organs. The bitters are purely medicinal in their character, and not a device for selling and drinking rum, as they contain no alcohol in any shape. THE REGULATOR.—Nothing can af ford half as much pleasure as a visit to Irvine's Boot, Shoe, Queesware, Glass ware and variety store, where he has just received and has on exhibition one of the best and most desirable selection of goods, in his line, ever offered to the citizens of Bedford and vicinity. Be sure and call. —% • , PHOTOGRAPHIC.—T. R. S. I. TOBIAS' PULMONIC LIFE Syrup, for the cure of Incipient Consumption, Coughs, colds, Croup, Asthma, Liver Complaints, Dyspepsia, and General Debility. For several years I have been urged by kind freinds, who have used, and been benefited by, my Life Syrup, to put it up for general sale ; but few know the large expense, now that the country is flooded with Patent Medicines, which attend the same For years past I was reluctant to do so, as the capital required would be large, aud I did not wish to curtail the operations of my Venetian Liniment business. But, thanks to the generous public, who have appreciated my Venetian Liui ment, I am now able to do so, without any detri ment to my large business in that medicine. The foundation of my success I attribute to attending to the manufacture of every drop myself, and shall do the same in regard to my Pulmonic Life Syrup. The Ingredients are perfectly harmless, but act on the Lungs and Liver with astonishing effect. Price 75 cents. Depot, No. 5(5 Cortlandt Street, New York, near Jersey City Ferry. He is the only physician who has used it in his own person, or who has any knowledge of its virtues ; and he can ascribe the degree of health he now enjoys to nothing but the use of his medicine ; and nothing but utter despair and entire extinction of all hope of recovery, together with a want of confidence in all others induced him to hazard the experiment To those suffering with any disease of the Lungs he proffers a treatment he confidently believes will eradicate the disease.
