"THE MONUMENT ASSOCIATION."—
111 our issue of two weeks ago. we
called attention to the failure in carry
ing out the laudable purposes of this
organization. We assigned tlie palpa
ble reason for this failure to its true
cause, —"too many talkers and too few
workers"—too many to say the work
ought and must be done, but too few
to make the personal exertion necessary
to accomplish it. In this, we distinctly
excepted the Central Committee of the
Association from censure, and wish now
to state again that our remarks did not
apply tothatCoiuinittee. The individ
uals composing it, are "high toned"
gentlemen in whom all have confidence,
and the failure of the enterprise cannot
be traced either to lack of exertion 011
their part, or to want of* public confi
dence in them. They did their duty
in the premises.
The Chairman at his own personal
expense, amounting to more than any
town or township subscription, we have
heard of, excepting, perhaps, that of
this Borough, made a trip to Philadel
phia, to discuss, and arrange plans, with
one of our first sculptors, so as to he
able to submit to the entire county
organization, when assembled, intelli
gent and reliable data as to the cost,
time of erection, Ac., of different plans,
and various sizes of same plans, and
having arranged for the time, after
(he order should be given, at which the
monument should be completed, he
returned home, to report to the Com
mittee and see what amount of funds
could be relied upon, so that the mon
ument might be ordered according to
the means provided. This we do
know, that had a tithe of the personal
exertion and outlay been made by
citizens in general, that was manifested
by the Chairman, the "monument"
would, before this time, have been a
"fixed fact," alike honorable to the
dead and creditable to those erecting
it.
The Central Committee had 110 idea
that any money, except that reported
to the Treasurer, had been realized in
any borougli or township, until the
intimation recently given, that in the
neighboring borough of Bloody Run,
such a fund had been collected.
We make this statement in justice
to the County Committee and their
Chairman.
IMPROVEMENTS.—Our enterprising
friend, J. J. Shoemaker, of the Red
ford Hotel, is about putting another
story on his house, which will make
the "Bedford" a most commodious and
comfortable hostelry. Messrs. Spang
and Durborrow and Lutzareal.so about
to erect a three story brick-building on
the corner immediately South of the
"Mengel House" to be occupied as of
fices. Mr. Jacob Bowser has made a
fine improvement to the old Colonnade
building recently purchased by him.
Our town gives more sign of business
life at present than it has shown for
years. We hope this spirit will not be
allowed to flag.
"OBTAINING money under false
pretences"—vending miserable hair
preparations. A trade that is fast
dying out, however; for the universal
popularity of "Barrett's Vegetable
Hair Restorative ' is rapidly putting
an effectual stop to such contraband
traffic.— Richmond Enquirer.
POTATOES FOR BREAKFAST.-
Take the mashed potatoes left from
dinner theday before, mix them smooth
with a little hot milk and butter, put
them by spoonfuls into an iron biscuit
pan, previously heated, and brown
them in a hot oven. They are very
light and nice.
FOR several weeks an exchange kept
the following conspicuously at the head
of its local column : "A BOV WANTED
AT THIS OFFICE." A few days since,
the editor's wife presented him with
"a boy," which, in a highly signifi
cant manner, shows the value of adver
tising.
THE NEW POOR HOUSE.—The Court
lias decided against the proposition to
sell the present Poor House property,
and in favor of building a new I'm r
Houseupon that property. It is undei
stood that the County Commissioners,
in accordance with this decision, will
proceed at once to erect the new build
ing. It is badly needed, and we hope
it will be pushed to an early comple
tion. We are informed that there is
about $5,000 in the Poor House Treas
ury, which, with a light addition to
the present Poor tax, for three or four
years, will pay for the erection of this
building.
TKM PERANCE There was
a large and respectable meeting of the
friends of temperance, in the Court
House, 011 Wednesday evening, of last
week. The Rev. 1). Hartman address
ed the meeting in an able manner.
Hon. John Cessna was called upon to
speak, but excused himself. He did
not attempt to explain why he did not
press upon the attention of the Legis
lature, the Prohibitory Liquor law
which he was appointed to draft.—
The Rev. Mr. Hartman spoke of cow
ardly people. The Honorable John
said nothing in reply.
HON. ROBERT FYAX.—'This gentle
man, son of Robert Fyan, Esq., is at
present on a visit to his relatives in
this place. Our young friend is an ex
ample of what energy and talent can
accomplish in a short time, in the
West. Some ten years ago he emigra
ted to Missouri, a lawyer just admitted
to practice. During the war he ser
ved with gallantry and distinction, and
rose to the rank of Colonel, in the Fed
eral army. Upon his return to civil
pursuits, he was elected to the Judge
ship of the district in which he resides,
a decided an I flattering compliment to
one so young.
