THE SOLDIERS' MONUMENT ASSOCI ATION. —There are a great many flatu lent people in all communities, who are always doing the"wind-work"ofsome project, or other, hut who expect oth ers to be the hewers of wood and draw ers of water when the real work comes to be done. It is an easy matter to hold a public meeting, appoint officers and committees, and then rest upon the laurels gained in making a speech or offering a resolution. This is gen erally the Alpha and the Omega of our "railroad meetings," and it is about the whole history of the effort to erect a monument to the Soldier Dead of Bedford county. Mark you, we do not say that the officers and commit tees appointed by the public meeting which started this project, did not do all that could be reasonably expected from them. The Chairman and Treasurer, and the committee for this borough, we know, did what they could to ob tain contributions. But nine of every ten who were loud in their praises of the "noble object," Ac., when it was first spoken of, and who were instru mental in calling public attention to it, forgot the next day after the public meeting, that it was a part of their business to push the matter. They had helped to do the "wind-work," and they concluded that that was their share. It is a shame that the praise worthy purpose of the Soldiers' Monu ment Association, has not been accom plished, but its want of success is owing neither to the inactivity of the offi cers, nor the parsimony of the people. The secret of its failure lies in the fact that there are too manv "wind-bags" and too few workers. We call atten tion to the communication of Dr. C. N. Ilickok, of this "place, Chair man of the Association, which will be found in another column, from which it appears that the sum of $51.40 was paid into the Treasury, and that, too, by the "disloyal" districts oi St. Clair and Saxton. NEW MODE OF COLLECTING THE TAXES.—We call attention to the Act of Assembly published on the fir t page, relative to the collection of taxes in this county. It will be seen that the old system of collectors for the several districts, is abolished, and it is made the duty of the County Treasurer to make the collections. We have not the space to comment upon the pecu liar features of this enactment, but re fer our readers to the act itself, the scope and tenor of which are easily un derstood. It is similar to the law in force in Franklin and Fultoir, the citi zens of which counties are well satis lied with their trial of the system. We think it will save the county a con siderable sum in percentages on collec tions, as the Treasurer is allowed only one third of the percentage allowed to collectors under the old system. It will also greatly lighten the taxes of those who make prompt payment, and will expedite the collection. At any rate, it is worthy of a fair trial. TEMpE KA SC E MEETING . —The! friends will hold a pub lic meeting in tiie Court House, on Wednesday evening, the 29th of April, j (Court week.) The meeting will be addressed by a number of persons. The ladies of Bedford Lodge of Good Temp- ; lars will entertain the audience, at in-' tervals, with choice vocal music. The public, and especially all friends of j Temperance, are invited to attend. 2w We have been requested to a<:d to the above, that the Hon. John (Vs-oa, Chairman of the Committee appointed by the State Temperance Convention of last year, to draft a Prohibitory Liquor Law and urge its j ' by the Legislature, is expected to bo pres ent at the meeting, for the purpose of giving his reasons for not drafting such a law, and for his failure to press the subject upon the consideration of the Legislature. Turn out and hear Mr. Cessna. WE call the attention to the adver tisement in another column of Messrs. Baily, Farrel & Co., of Pittsburg. The firm mentioned are doing a large and extensive business in the manufacture and sale of Water, Gas and £team Goods of every description. Their factory is at Xos. 2o and 22 Strawberry and warehouse and office at No. 1 (7 Smithfield street. The machinery used by this firm is of the latest and most improved kind, many machines being covered by patents, and taken altogeth er, is well calculated for turning out goods of superior quality. Messrs. 8., F. & Co. have on hand over one hun dred different varieties and styles of pumps, ranging from a small cistern or farm punin to steam pumps ol mammoth proportions. Their stock of fittings for iron, gas, and water pipes is the largest in the western country, consisting of over five hundred differ ent patterns, while their stock of brass cocks and valves for plumbers and ma chinists' use cannot be excelled. By the use of superior machinery, Messrs. 8., F. it Co. are prepared to fill orders for lead pipe of any length required, all in one piece, so that farmers and others can lay lead pipe without the as sistance of a mechanic. Messrs. 8., F. it Co. are energetic and reliable business men, and we would recommend parties interested in water, gas or steam goods to correspond with them. Ter the Gazette. Moldler*' Monument. BEDFORD, April 16,1865. 11. NICODEMUS, ESQ., Sec\i/ and Treas urer of Bedford co. Soldiers' Monu ment Association: DEAR Slß;—Will you please state, for the information of the public, what monies have been paid into the Treas ury of the Association? Yours Truly, C. N. IIICKOK, C'h'n. BEDFORD, April 16, 1868. 1)R. C. N. HICKOK, chairman, Bedford co. Soldiers' Monument Association : DEAR Slß:—There have come into my hands, for the Monument Associa tion, as follows: From Henry F. Smith, oneol the Exeeii tive Committee of St. Clair tj>., $33 50 From C. S. Faxon, E-q., en'! Capt. L. B. Waltz, Ex. Com. of Liberty tp., 20 90 Total, $54 40 The above is all I have any knowl edge of, as collected in the county, for the building of a Soldiers' Monument. The amount from St. Clair tp., 1 have paid back to Mr. Smith, and I hold the contribution from Liberty tp., ready to l>e returned to any one authorized to receive it, as it is evident, from the poor responses made to tiic repeated ef forts of the Central Committee, that the "Monument" is not to be built. Very Truly Yours, H. NICODEMUS, Treas. MESSRS EDITORS The above cor respondence will explain itself, and I respectfully request that you will pub lish it, not only as due to theeominuni ty at large, but, also, that wrongful impressions, the result of misstate ments, may thus be corrected. My attention was called to an editor ial article, that appeared in the "Bed ford Countj/ Press," of week before last (the third one, I understand, from Bloody Run, on the same subject, al though I did not see the others,) con veying the impression that, "from neg ligence" the monument has not been built, and "not owing to the want uf mean.;, for," continues that paper, "s<> far as we can understand, these were j supplied." The "Press" being yet in its infan- j cy, it would be too much, perhaps, to look for a mature understanding in that quarter ; yet, it should he appai ent, even to a very juvenile compre hension, that the sum of $54.40, would go but a small way toward the erection of a memorial, to which man// thorn- i amis would be but a poor tribute, and the lowest possible estimate of the cost ! of which, was $5,000. The "Press" perpetrated a most cru el, though perhaps unconscious sar cism, on Led ford county's-apprecia tion of the value of the lives and suf ferings of its heroic dead, when it "inti mated that sufficient means have been : secured to erect THE MONUMENT." j The Central Committee were long ago forced to the conclusion, so truth fully and tersely expressed by the Treasurer of the fund, that there is, on the part of the people of this coun ty, a general indisposition to leave ! standing, for the contemplation of fu ture generations, any memento of their gratitude to those who so freely offer ed their lives on thealtarof their coun ty. With the exception, perhaps, of some I "widows' mite," I do not suppose there I has been a single individual subscrip tion in the county, that could, by any process of distortion, be made to appear as "liberality but, if the citizens of Bloody Run, or any other portion of our county, have "subscribed liberally and paid two years ago for a monu- j mont," as the Press says they have, | their donations have never yet found ! their way into the Treasury of the As sociation, nor have the Central Com mittee heard of them. I have given the Treasurer's state-: meat of the amount received here, and j if any monies have been paid to either of the various Borough or Township committees, which have not been re ported here, they should, at once, be j returned to the donors, as the project! for which they were given, has, of necessity, been abandoned. It will give me pleasure to forward to any one desiring the information, the names of these several committees, so that money "subscribed and paid for this purpose," may he claimed by those having given it. Any person in the county so "exceed- j ingly anxious to know if the money is ; to be appropriated as they were made I to believe," as the Press asserts there! are, could long ago have had this state ment of the truth, by application to any one of the Central Committee.
