NOTICETO DELINQUENTS.—WC have
placed our hunk* and accounts in the
hands of John I*. Recti, Esq., of this
place, for collection. Ail accounts for
subscription for the year ending Au
gust l, 18(18, remaining unpaid, are in
cluded in the bills which Mr. Reed is
authorized to collect. We have been
compelled to resort to this course in or
der'toobtain a settlement of our ac
counts. We have too much to do to
attend to making out bills, and we
are tired of dunning. M ney we must
have, as we have many debts to pay,
ami we desire toact honestly with our
creditors. Therefore, we ask all to
pay Mr. deed, who can, and those who
cannot, we ask to call and settle. If
there is any thing in their accounts by
which they consider themselves ag
grieved, let them call on us, and we
will make all right that is not right.
Friends, let us have the old scores wip
ed out, and begin anew.

"BEDFORD COUNTY PRESS."—We
have received a prospectusof the "Bed
ford County Press " a new (taper about
to be started at Bloody Run, this coun
ty, by J. C. Bong & Co. The Press is
to be "neutral in polities." The first
number of the paper will be issued on
the fourth ot March, next. We are well
acquainted with the projectors of tiiis
euier|irise, and believe they will be able
to make a good paper We hope they
may have much success, and whilst
their journal remains truly "neutral in
politics," they can always count 0:1
our friendship aiul good wishes.
BORDER LQSSES.—The bill which
coiiiempla es payment, by the Stale,
for looses sustained by the bonier coun
ties during the war has been reported
by the committee to which it was re
ferred. We are glad of tiiis. We fear
ed that it might be strangled in the
committee. An opportunity will now
b.* (iresented to the members of the
Legislature to put themselves on the
record in favoi of or against this propo
sition. We trust that the Democrats
in that body will show themselves
willing to do justice to the plundered
citizens of the border, and let the Rad
icals shoulder the responsibility of de
feating this bill, if it is to be defeated.
'At any rate, let us have a fair open
vote on the hill, so that we can see who
are our friends.— Val. Spirit.

Much Snow In the Western Fnd: A Good
oral of sleighing: Anhrom hecapiia
teth the Radical Irudm iu JiininiH, etc.
DRY RIDGE, Feb. 21, 1808.
MB. EDlTOß:— Thinking you might
occasionally like to hear from \our
friends in this section, 1 Itave tak
en the lil>erty to write you a few lines,
hoping that the same may prove ac
ceptable.
We have had much snow, and, con
s-quently, a gooil deal of sleighing,
ilorse-fle.-di lias sutfered considerably,
anal, occasitmally, by tbe accident of
tin np-eet, human flesh has not escaped
injury. For instance the other night
a party of young fellows were enjoy
ing a sleigh-ride behind a fast horse,
aud "brought up" against a stump to
the great damage of trousers and the
bruising of legs.
Quite a flutter among the Radicals
of this neighborhood was occasioned a
few days ago, by the annoixncemeut
that Collector C. VV. Asbconi'had cut
off the head of Leonard Bittner, E-q.,
store-keeper at John Hughes' distil
lery aud ap|>ointed in his stead a man
by the name-of Hammer. Bittner hits
been one of the leaders of the Radical
party in Juuiata township, for years,
and always stood by his party through
good and through evil report. He
hails from Somerset county, and comes
of a respectable and prosperous stock,
lie has always been opposed to the
Democratic party, ai'd was really the
leading spirit of the Radical organiza
tion in Juniata tp. Why Ashcom
should have made the mistake of de
capitating him and appointing anoth
er in his stead, puzzles everybody. Per
haps lie intended to Hummer some
body. Your friend Jacob Coriey, an
other prominent Radical of Juniata
tp., and a worker in the ranks of bis
party, was an applicant for the store
keepership at L. N. Fyan's distillery.
Jacob fared" no better than his com
peer, Mr. Bittner. If anybody deserv
ed an office at the hands of the Radical
party, it was Jacob Coriey. But "Re
publicans" as well as Republics, "are
ungrateful."
The snow is rapidly leaving and ev
en the drifts on the "pike" are grow
ing sifutll. To-day a mild south-west
wind is blowing, and Spring seems to
he almost upon us. Let liercotne, say
I, and the sooner the better.
Yours,
SOLDIER.
THE following is going the rounds of
the press, "A rule by which counterfeit
greenbacks, or national bank notes ran
I>edetected, but lately has been discover
ed, which upon thorough trial has prov
ed infallible. It is this: Divide the
last two figures of the number of the
bills by four, if one remains the letter
on the genuine will be A. If two re
mains it will be B; if three remains it
will be C. For example; a note is reg
istered 2.(11; divide forty-one bv four,
and yoti will have one remaining. Ac
cording to the rule, the letter on the
note will be A. In ease the rule fails,
be certain hat the note is counterfeit."
Try it.
