DEMOCRATIC MEETING I
The Democrats of Bedford county,
and all who support the Constitution
against the attacks of Radical aggres
sion, are requested to assemble in
M ASS MEETING,at the Court House,
on Monday evening, Feb. 10, (Court
Week) for the purpose of expressing
their disapprobation of the extraordi
nary, unconstitutional and despotic
course of Congress in attempting to es
tablish Negro Supremacy in Ten States
of this Union at the point of the bayo
net, and electing a Delegate to the
Democratic State Convention which is
to assemble at Harrisburgon the fourth
of March next.
All who dexire a change in the luw
m'tking power of the country, no matter
to what party they have heretofore be
longed, are respectfully invited to at
tend and participate in the proceed
ings of the meeting.
GEO. MARDORFF,
Ch'n. Deni. Co. Com.
W. C. SUIIAEFFER, Sec'y.
VERY MUCH CONCERNED. —The Rad
ical papers of this Congressional dis
trict, are in a terrible fidget over the
prospective Democratic nomination for
Congress. They have already announ
ced a half dozen candidates for that
nomination, and seem to be on the
look-out for more. This is evidently
the result of their conviction that our
next Congressman will be a Democrat,
and their consequent anxiety to know
who is to be the man. Tlu; Fulton Re
publican y of last week, has the follow
ing:
"The Democracy of this district are j
already agitating the subject as to
w>o shall be their standard-bearer j
i i the aproaching contest for member
of Congress from this district.
Somerset county presents llou. A.
11. Coffroth, Adams county, Hon.
Win. McSherry, Bedford and Frank
lin will, no doubt, put forward two or
more aspirants, and in our own "Lit-j
tie Fulton" the "unterrified" are!
pressing Geo. A. Smith, Esq. Of
course it is a matter of indifference
to us which all of these they set up lo
be knocked down, for no one whom
they nominate can by any possib e j
chance, be elected, but admitting for |
argument sake, that there may be one j
chance in ten thousand, there is no '
one among the democracy named j
or any likely to be named, whom we]
would rather see selected than our en-1
terprising fellow citizen, Geo. A.Smith,
Esq., if the fates should decree that
the democracy should carry this dis
trict.
Politically we have 110 more faith in
Mr. Smith than in any other Demo- j
crat, but personally we have a high
regard for him, and he certainly has a !
strong claim to the preference and we !
see no reason why we may not have
a chance at defeating him just as well!
as any other man.
If the democracy of this district will j
not consider us officious, we will recom- j
mend to them to nominate George A. i
Smith of Fulton, just for the fun of j
liavinga lively campaign in this coun
ty."
As the Radical papers appear to have
forgotten that there are aspirants in
their own ranks, or consider them too
"small potatoes" to mention their
names, we will just remind them that
there are such among them. The pres
ent incumbent, Gen. Koontz, of Somer
set , is pressed, weare told, forrenomi
nation. John Cessna, ex-copperhead,
of Bedford, is a candidate. Dr. S. E.
Dutfield, of Fulton, quiet as you keep
it, Mr. R publican, has not abandoned
his hopeof being the nominee. Frank
lin county has a candidate in the person
of a certain iron-master whose name
we don't, just now, recollect. And
Adams will present our unfortunate
friend McPherson, who needs the place
very much, never having had an of
fice in his life. Among these we, of
course, prefer our own distinguished,
"lalyented," and upright fellow citizen,
the Hon. John Cessna. We hope he
inuy be the nominee, if for n;> other
reason than "just to have a lively
campaign in M/a^ounty,"
SERIOUS RAILROAD ACCIDENT.— On
Tuesday last, 31st ult., a very serious
accident occurred 011 the Pennsylvania
Railroad, a short distance from Mill
Creek, Huntingdon co., by the break
ing of a rail. Four cars of the fast line,
ran off the track and upset over an em
bankment. ;>irs. Annie Duggin, ot
Pittsburg, was killed, and her body
partially burned up. Her husband,
Patrick Duggin, was also seriously
burned. A number (if other persons
were injured, though, it is thought,
not fatally. Three of the cars were
destroyed by tire.

NEW OFFICERS.—We have omitted
to notice the installation of the new
county officers chosen at the late elec
tion, for which dereliction we now
make amends. Michael Wertz, Esq.,
of Union tp.,is the retiring Commission
er, and is succeeded by Peter M. liar
ton, of E. Providence. The county
has had few better Commissioners
than Esq. Wertz and will have few
better ones than Mr. Barton. Ihe
board of Commissioners is at present ,
composed of Mr. M- Ritchey, ol
Snake Spring. Air. How-are, of
Southampton, and Mr. Barton. J. W •
Dickerson, Esq., is Attorney to the
Commissioners and J. G. Usher, Clerk.
Mr. Samuel Beck ley, of St Clair, is
the retiring Poor Director, and is
succeeded ty Mr. J. I. Noble,S. Wood
bury. Mr. Beekley was highly esteem
ed as an officer, and it is universally
conceded that Mr. Noble is very vigi
lant and efficient. .he board of Poor
Directors at present consists of Mr. I>.
it. Anderson, of Cumlierland Valley,
Michael Diehl, of Colerain and Mr. No
ble. J. W. Dickerson, Esq., is A torney
to the board, and T. It. Gettys, Clerk.
Samuel Defibaugh has been re-appoint
ed Steward, Joseph Wills, Miller, and
Dr. F. C. Reamer Physician.—Mr.
Geo. Mardorff is the retiring County
Treasurer and .Mr. Isaac Mengel is his
successor. Mr. Mardorff comes out
"all right" with the State and County,
which isas high an encomium as can
he passed upon any custodian of the
public moneys. Mr. Mengel is one of
our substantial citizens and the finan
ces are safe in his hands. On the whole,
Bedford county is well officered at
present, and nine out of ten of those
who find fault, would not make as
faithful public servants as those now
in office.
NARROW ESCAPE.—OR Tuesday
night of last week, as a sleighing party
of ladies and gentlemen from this
place were crossing the "red bridge,"
near Mr. Wisegarver's, on the I lolli
daysburg road, the pair of front horses
of a four-horse team became detached,
dragging the driver, Mr. Andrew Mid
dleton, forward upon the tongue of the
sled, between the horses that remained
hitched. Had it not been for Mr. Mid
illeton's admirable presence of mind,
this accident might have resulted very
seriously. Clinging to the tongue, he
sustained himself on topof it, whilst he
retained the lines and stopped the hor
ses. Truly, a narrow escape.
SERIOUS ACCIDENT.-- Weare pained to
learn that our friend Michael Naugle,
of Boydstown, had his leg fractured,
a few days ago, by falling through the
flooring of a "hay-m w." It appears
that Mr Naugle was engaged in haul
ing shingles from the mountain, and
stopped at the old Elonburger stand,
about 20 miles west of this place, to
feed his horses. On going upon the
"mow" to throw down some hay, he
fell through the flooring and fractured
his leg as above stated. Hewas brought
home the next day, suffering very
much from the injury.
LECTURE.— The lecture delivered in
the Court House, on Tuesday night
las , by Rev. A. J. Burrow, on "West
minster Abbey," was highly interest
ing and very able. We are only sorry
that there was not a larger attendance,
especially as the lecture was given for
the benefit of the Cemetery Associa
tion. It is unaccountable to our mind,
that a "magic lantern" or other "one
horse show," attracts more people than
the best lecture that can be given for
the best of objects. But such is the
fact.
MARE STOLEN.— On the night of tli£
thirty-first ult., an iron grey mare was
stolen from the stable of Mr James C.
Hughes, five miles east ofCumberland,
Md. The animal is about fifteen hands
high, has a heavy mane and tail and
asmall wart 011 the corner of the eye,
also a slight scratch 011 the inside of the
left hind leg. A reward of seventy
five dollars will be paid for the recov
ery of the mare and capture of the thief,
or fifty dollars for tlie mare alone, by
Mr. Hughes.
WE learn that the Office of the Coun
ty Treasurer, at Huntingdon, was en
tered by burglars last night, and the
safe broken open, by battering the door
completely off. There were several
hundred dollars in the safe yesterday,
but Treasurer Logan had fortunately
taken it with him when leaving the
office last evening, so the thieves had
their labor for nothing. The safe was
a Lilly's,nearly new, having been pur
chase! by the Commissioners to take
the place of one similarly demolished
by burglars about a year ago.— Jß. U
nion Jlerakl, "lid ult.
BURNED TO DEATH.— A little
daughter of Mr. Patrick Shay, of Al
toona, some ten or twelve years of age,
was burned to death, on Friday last.
She was playing about the stove dur
ing t lie absence of the other members
ot the family, and her clothing igniting
from the fire, she was wrapped in flame
before assistance could reach her, and
so terribly injured that death ensued
almost immediately.— Cambria Free
man, 30th ult.
HARNESS STO: EN. —One night week
before last (probably Wednesday) there
was stolen from the stable of G. A.
] Bmi th, Esq., in this borough, a fine sei
I (nearly new) of double harness belong
] ''ig to him. The loss was first detected
I 011 Thursday, by some boys who failed,
however, to give notice of the fact un
til Sunday. There are suspicions as
to the thief. The harness was worth

MILL BURNED.— Foreman's Mill,
. near Greencastle, Franklin county, was
burned, a few days ago, and with it
: were consumed some 5,000 bushels ol
wheat. Loss about SIO,OOO. The
j light of the burning building was
plainly visible ac McC nnellsburg, says
I the Democrat,
LECTURE ON FRIDAY EVENING.—
Rev. Barrow is to lecture on Friday
evening, at the court House, for the
benefit of the Episcopal Sunday School.
Subject, "liel>er, the missionary in Cal
cutta and author of the well known
hymn, 'From Greenland's Icy moun
tains,' Ac."
COURT WEEK.—Persons attending
Court, next week, will find Berkstress
ers' Hat and Clothing Emporium a
good place to buy cheap and excellent
goods.
MAGNANIMITY is an invariabl.
characteristic of a brave soldier, ami
forgiveness a shining trait of a tru<
Christian. Governor Geary claims t<
he a soldier and a Christian, but mani
fests the utter emptiness of his title
to either distinction by withholding
the Pennsylvania appropriation to the
Antietam Cemetery, because the Mary
land authorities have made provision
for burying some of the Confederate
dead therein. This pursuit of a foe
beyond thegrave may suit the tastes
and inclinations of extreme Radicals,
but it merits tne condemnation ot ev
ery soldier and Christian in the land,
and we are glad to know that it is re
ceiving it. The New York Tribune
says of it :
"It is said that Governor Geary
wit lib 'lds the Pennsylvania appro
priation from the Antietam Cemetry.
because the Maryland authorities have
made provision for burying the rebel
dead therein. We trust that the story
is not true. If we are ready to pardon
the rebels who have laid down theii
arms, can we not forget resentment to
wards those who have given up their
lives?"

"TILECO• OREDTROOPS FOUGHT NO

hat after all there is some evidence ex
tant that casts a shadow of doubt over
the assertion. The records of the War
Departments how that fourteen "colored
troops" deserted where one was killed;

one killed; that nearly twenty were mus
tered out of the service for disability
where one was killed in battle. Look
