MORE BOROUGHS.— The towns of
Woodberry and St. Clairsville were in
corporated as Boroughs, at the last term
of Court. There are, now, eight Bor
oughs in this county, viz: Bedford,
Bloody Run, Schellsburg, Woodberry,
St. Clairsville, Saxton, Coaldale and
Rainsburg.
NEW OIL ENTERPRISE.— An oil com
pany has been started in Monroe tp.,
this county, called the "Black Valley
Oil Compauy," with Daniel Fletcher,
Esq., as President, for the purpose of
developing the Black Valley region.
A well is to besunk on the farm of Thos.
Rose, Esq., and some $3,600 has already
been subscribed for this purpose.

ADMITTED. —We observe among the
proceedings of court last week, that, on
motion of Hon. S. L. Russell, Hays
Irvine, Esq., of this place, was admit
ted to the bar. We understand that
Mr. Irvine's examination was very
creditable to him. His experience,
heretofore, in the Prothonotary's office,
will give him a great advantage in the
practice, and we bespeak for him a
useful future.
IMPORTANT TO HUCKSTERS. —We
notice among the bills passed by the
Legislature, and approved by the Gov
ernor, one repealing the first section of
the act relative to huckstering in Bed
ford, Cumberland, Fulton, Franklin
and York Counties, which discriminates
against non-residents of those counties,
and compelling the Treasurers to re
fund to non-residents, who have licen
ses imposed by this act, the excess so
paid over and above the licences im
posed on residents.
ODD FELLOWS' THANKSGIVING.—
Friday last, 26th ult., was observed by
the Odd Fellows, of this county, as a
day of Thanksgiving. The attendance
from the various lodges throughout the
county was very respectable. A pro
cession was formed, which paraded the
streets, preceded by a band of music,
and after inarching through the town,
proceeded to the Presbyterian Church,
where an address was delivered by
Dr. C. N. Hickok, Dep. Grand Master.
The address of Dr. Hickok, was very
instructive and entertaining, and all
went away highly gratified.
THE BORDFR RKLIEF BILL.— The
following from the Fulton Republican,
of last week, we endorse to the last let
ter :
•The bill for the relief of thesufferers
along the Border by reason of the reb
el invasion, <fcc., failed to become a law.
It pissed the House, but was killed in
the Hnate. It is only another evidence
of theunmitigated meanness and sel-
of some men — mean , because
the disticts which oppose it were far
remove! from the scene of war, and
rested secure in person and property,
while wt, along the Border, were con
stantly e.\posed and stood as a bulwark
between tlem and the enemy, and were
liable, at fimost any time for three or
four years, to incursions from guerrilla
bands and our substance taken from
us, while our young men were absent
in the army, battling alongside those
from our more favored districts; selfish,
because an appropriation for this pur
pose would make so much less in the
Treasury for these fellows to appropri
ate to themselves in some shape or oth
er.
We know of men who, to the extent
of their ability, sustained the Govern
ment in men and means, and then, in
some iustances,lost all they had by the
rebel guerrillas, and we ask, is it just
that those who sustained the Govern
ment to their own injury should now
be left to suffer by neglect of that Gov
ernment?

BEDFORD C UNTY AGRICULTURAL
SOClETY.— Pursuant to public notice a
meeting of the Bedford County Agri
cultural Society, was held at the Court
House, on Wednesday evening, April,
24. On motion a temporary organiza
tion was effected, by calling GEO. W.
WILLIAMS, Esq,, of Napier, to the
Chair, and the appointment of William
Hartley Esq., of Bedford, as Secretary.
Mr. Hartley having been called up
on to explain the object of the meeting,
briefly stated that it was to make pre
liminary arrangements for the holding
of a County Fair during the coming
fall.
On motion it was resolved that an
Executive Committee of nine be ap
pointed to make the necessary arrange
ments for the holding of the proposed
Fair, said Committee to consist of the

The Character of the Pennsylvania
State Loan.—The financial security of
a Commonwealth rests on the double
foundation of sufficient resources and
popular confidence in the willingness
and ability of the State to pay its debts.
Viewed from these standpoints, we
must assign to the new loan lately nego
tiated by Pennsylvania the foremost
place among all the investments of the
day of reliability. When we
consider the vast resources of the
Keystone State, and the limited amount
of her indebtedness, which, when com
pared with her assets, make her liabil
ities as a drop in a bucket, we can im
agine no safer or more desirable form
of permanent investment than the
purchase of the bonds of the Common
wealth.

GEARY. — The Erie Dispatch, (Repub
lican) says:—"lt is claimed for Gov.
Geary that he is wise and strong in
intellect. A Governor who signs a
law and then asks the Legislature to
repeal it because he did not know what
he signed until somebody told him,
as Geary did in the case of the Al
legheny Valley Railroad bill, is not
overloaded with brains."
—The New Castle Gazette makes
this apt suggestion:
