COMMISSIONER.
MR. EDITOR :—Please announce Joseph Souser,
of Napier township, as a candidate for Commis
sioner, subject to the decision of the Democratic
county convention.
We are authorized to announce Henry Egolf. of
Napier tp., as a candidate for the office of Commis
sioner, subject to the decision of the Democratic
couuty convention.
DISTRICT ATTORNEY APPOINTED.—
The Court, on Monday last, appointed
E. F. Kerr, Esq., District Attorney,
vice John Palmer, non est inventus. This
is a good appointment, as we doubt not,
Mr. Kerr will make an excellent offi
cer.
SHOEMAKER'S CHEAP CORNER. —See
the advertisement of J. M Shoemaker,
No. 1 Anderson's Row. Job still
holds forth at the old place and has
just received from the East, a very
large stock of Spring and Summer
Goods, which will be sold very cheap.
FOUND.— The body of J. H. Typper
who was drowned in the Juniata, near
Hopewell, was found on Saturday, 13th
inst., about a mile and a half above
Stonerstown, by Thomas Snider, Jacob
Miller and Arch. Miller. The remains
were interred at Martinsburg on the
following Monday.
THE REGULATOR.— We call the at
tention of our readers to the advertise
ment of Irvine and Statler, the proprie
tors of the Bedford Regulator. The
"Regulator's column" displaysan array
of cheap and excellent goods unparall
elled in the history of merchandising.
Call and see for yourselves.
COURT.— The Legislature having
changed the time for holding the
Courts of this county, April term came
upon us, this year, almost before we
were ready for it. Court has been in
session since Monday last. There ap
pears to be any amount of applications
for Boroughs, New Townships, chang
es of places of holding election, et idom
ne genus.
AGRICULTURAL MEETING.— A call
has been issued for a meeting to re
vive the Bedford County Agricultural
Society, with a view to holding a Coun
ty Fair during the coming Fall. We
urge our fanners to take hold of this
matter. It is their interest to see that
it is successsully carried through, and
they ought to control its organization.
A GREAT SERMON.— The Farewell
Sermon of Rev. S. Kepler, delivered in
the Court House, on Sunday evening
last, was one of the most impressively
eloquent performances to which we
have ever listened, and what is better,
it breathed the true Christian spirit of
Peace, giving love for hate and pity
foremnity. A large concourse of peo
ple listened to the sermon, and all went
away well pleased.
SABBATH SCHOOL EXERCISES ON
EASTER SUNDAY.— Messrs. Editors:—
Sunday last was a scene of pleasure to
the children of the Sunday School of
the St. James Episcopal church. At
3} o'clock P. M., the children assem
bled in the Court House, a large audi
ence being attracted. Knowing that
services would be held appropriate to
Easter day, the exercises began with
singing a beautiful Easter Carol. A
number had committed to memory, a
large number of Scripture verses, which
were recited in a clear and distinct tone.
The smaller children were then asked
questions from the catechism, which
were answered readily. They also
gave the Ten Commandments in a
manner reflecting great credit on their
teachers. It is seldom that children so
young can repeat the catechism and
commandments so correctly. The Rec
tor, Rev. Mr. Barrow, made a short
but beautiful address, after which he
presented an Easter egg, beautifully
colored and decorated, and a handsome
bouquet of spring flowers, to each mem
ber of the Sunday School. The chil
dren then sang Gloria in Excetsis,
which, with the benediction, by the
Rector, closed the very interesting ex
ercises. *
EFFACE THF CIGAR STAMPS.—AS
many business men aresubjecting them
selves to a heavy penalty by their igno
rant violation of the thirty-second sec
tion of the revenue law passed at the
close of the Thirty-ninth Congress, it is
stated for the information of all con
cerned, that the section in question
enacts—
"That any person who shall sell, give
away or otherwise dispose of an y em pty
cigar boxes or boxes which have been
stamped, without first defacing or des
troyingsuch stamp, shall,on conviction
of either offense, be liable to a penalty
of one hundred dollars, or to impris
onment not exceeding sixty days, or
both, at the discretion of the court, with
the costs of the trial; and it shall be
lawful for any cigar inspector or rev
enue officer to destroy any empty cigar
box upon which a cigar stamp shall be
found.
MESSRS. CLARK & Co., Chemists,
Syracuse, N. Y., would call attention
to their advertisements in another col
umn, headed "Reparator Capilli,"
"C'risper Coma,"and 'Circassian Balm.'
These, undoubtedly, are the most per
fect and efficacious articles of the kind
ever offered the American Public. To
unbelievers, we would say, "try them
and be convinced."
THE attention of our readers is called
to the Advertisements in another col
umn of Messrs Berger, Shutts & Co.,
Chemists, Troy, N. Y. They are man
ufacturers of, and agents for, some of
the most valuable Toilet preparations
in use. By their u3e all may possess a
clear, smooth skin, or a healthy and
lnxuriant growth of hair upon the head
or face. Those of our readers having
use for anything of the kind, would do
well to patronize them.
JOHN W. BOW EN ESQ., is a regular
ly authorized agent for this paper, and
will visit our friends throughout the
county, for the purpose of making col
lections and taking subscritions. We
hope that his calls will be responded
to in the proper spirit. We havesome
$6,000 on our books, SI,OOO of which we
need very badly to pay a debt we owe
in bank. In fact we must collect, and
if mild measures will not answer our
purpose, we will be compelled to resort
to harsher ones. There are many per
sons who pay promptly. To such,
thanks! There are more who do not.
To such, duns, and finally writs. We
desire to oppress no man. We are wil
ling to be liberal to those who are in
straitened circumstances. But if me
do not heed our request to settle, if they
treat our call for payment with con
tempt, they have no further claim upon
our generosity. We have given away
enough in our business to keep a small
family five years. If we are to contin
ue that sort of work, we want those
who can pay to come forward and do
it, and those who can't, to step up and
settle. Of course, we don't refer to
those who do pay. If this be not at
tended to soon , we will see whether
"some things can't be done as well as
others."
—A rumor is current at Washington
that England intends to seize the Phil
ippine Islands as a reprisal from Spain
in the matter of the seizure of the Tor
nado and Victoria.
—Henry Ward Beecher has been
nominated as one of the republican
candidates for the New York Constitu
tional Convention, in Brooklyn. Hor
ace Greeley has also been nominated.
—The Maine papers are greatly exer
cised over the fact that marble-playing
has been introduced amongst the boys
of that State. They demand that
rigid prohibitory laws be passed
against this demoralizing mode of
gambling.
—The prospect for a large crop of peach
es in Delaware is reported to be very
flattering. The cold weather has had
the effect of keeping the sap down and
buds from expanding, and should they
not be injured by late frosts, the crop
bids fair to equal that of 1864.
KNOW THY DESTINY.—MADAME
E. F. THORNTON, the great English Astrologist,
Clairvoyant and Psychometrician, who has aston
ished the scientific classes of the Old World, has
now located herself at Hudson, N. Y. Madame
Thornton possesses such wonderful powers of sec
ond sight, as to enable her to impart knowledge of
the greatest importance to the single or married of
either sex. While ft a state of trance, she delin
eates the very features of the person you are to
marry, and by the aid of an instrument of intense
power, known as the Psychomotrope, guarantees
to produce a lifelike picture of the future husband
or wife of the applicant, together with the date of
marriage, position in life, leading traits of char
acter, Ac. This is DO humbug, as thousands of
testimonials can assert. She will send when de
sired a certified certificate, or written guarantee,
that the picture is what it purports to be. By en
closing a small lock of hair, and stating place of
birth, age, disposition and complexion and enclo

IMPORTANT QUALITIES. —BRAND-
RETH'S PILLS SO stimulate all the interior powers
of the system that every poison or impurity is for
ced from the blood into the bowels, and thus pas
ses off. Recent cases of sickness will often be
cured by the effect of 6 or 8 Brandreth's Pills,
which, when the operation is full and complete,
leave the blood as free from poisonous and un
healthy matter as that of a new-born babe. In
colds, inflammatory diseases, and even in cholera,
their use restores to health sooner than all other
remedies, because thqy take from the blood and
bowels those matters upon which pains, cramps,
and aches depend for con.inuance.
Captain Isaac Smith, of Sing Sing, says, thirty
of Brandre'h's Pills, taken according to directions,
cured him of a very severe bronchial affection af
ter other means had failed and he wishes his nu
merous friends to know the fact.
Brandreth's Pills, Principal Office, Brandreth
House, New York. Sold also by all Druggists.—
See my name on Government stamp, without which
the pills are spurious. B. BRANDRETH.

CONSUMPTION CURABLE BY DR.
SCHENCK'S MEDICINES. —To care consumption, the
system must be prepared so that the lungs will
heal. To accomplish this, the liver and stomach
must first be cleansed and an appetite created for
good wholesome food, which, by these medicines
will be digested properly, and good healthy blood
made; thus building up the constitution. Schenck's
Mandrake Pills cleanse the stomach of all bilious
or mucous accumulations; and, by using the Sea
Weed Tonic in connection, the appetite is restored.
Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup is nutritious as well
as medicinal, and, by using the three remedies, all
impurities are expelled from the system, and good,
wholesome blood made, which will repel all dis
ease. If patients will take theie medicines ac
cording to directions, consumption very frequently
in its last stage yields readily to their action.—
Take the pills frequently, to cleanse the liver and
stomach. It does not follow that because the bow
els are not costive they are not required, for some
times in diarrhoea they are necessary. The stom
ach must be kept healthy, and an appetite created
to allow the Pulmonic Syrup to act on the respir
atory organs properly and allay any irritation.
Then all that is required to perform a permanent
cure is, to prevent taking cold. Exercise about
the rooms as much as possible, eat all the richest
food—fat meat, game, and, in fact, anything the
appetite craves; but be particular and masticate
well. 2d w

of cases of cures have been reported to me, and

be without it. Besides which, it is a certain cure
for cuts, burns, headache, toothache, sore throats,
swellings, mump*, colic, diarrhoea, dysentery,
spasms, old sores, and pains in the back and chest.
No one once tries it who is ever without it. It is
warranted perfectly safe to take internally. Full
