PROPOSED ERECTION OK A ROLLING
MILL.—We have been requested to
publish the following article on the
subject of erecting a Rolling Mill at
Hopewell, this county. It is with great
pleasure that we comply with this re
quest and add our sincerest wishes for
the success of the enterprise proposed :
"lie is said to he a public benefactor
who makes two blades of grass to grow
where only one grew before. That
this great fact is true in the useful in
dustrial arts, as well as in agricultural
economy, apitears self evident. Hence,
where a single manor company of men.
by the judicious application of capital
and labor, produce or increase the pro
duction of materials required in the sec
tion of country in which their enter
prise may be |ocat< d, they are not only
benefitting that region specially, but
are contributing to the aggregate in
dustry and wealtit oft he wholeeiftiutry.
The benefits of suclt an enterprise will
be more fully appreciated when it is
known that the produced article is man
ufactured from imperials native to tile
section embraced in the operations. It
is true that parties entering on such an
enterprise expect from the general ben
efits conferred by it to realize, by care
ful and economical management, a lib
era! return on their investment.
Appreciating the above facts, a few
gentlemen have united to canvas por
tions of the counties of Huntingdon,
Bedford, Fulton, Rlair and Somerset to
solicit subscriptions of stock for the pur-:
pose of erecting a merchant bar Robing
Mill at the town of Hopewell or Saxton, ,
or such other point as a majority of the
Stockholders may deem most eligible.
It is proposed to issue 700 shares of
Stock of SIOO each, making the capital
S7O,(NHL It is not intended to begin op
erations until the Stockholders decide
not only the ion it ion of the mill, but
also its general capacity, and cost, for ;
which fuirj ose, it is proposed that after
organization the Stock holders appoint a
committee to report on the most econ
omical machinery, its cost, capacity, ex- j
pensc of working, and estimated reve
nue with other matters pertinent to the |
enterprise—after which the stock will be ,
called in to meet the expenses of the
work as they accrue. The mill is in
tended to roll ordinary bar iron for gen- j
eral country use, giving special atten
tion to the scantling of iron required by i
the coal operators in the Broad Top
Coal Region. It is not designed to an
ticipate the report of the committee to !
be appointed by the Stock holders, but j
to brit iiy advert to the fact of the gen
era! prosperity of the rolling niiils of
the country. < )ueinstance, will authen
ticated may lie adduced —a robing mill ;
and nail manufacturing company in a
small town, realized during the past i
year, a net.profit 0f.511,0000n an invest
ment in machinery and mill of about ,
*70,000. Ills reasonably claimed fori
tiie present enterprise that it can obtain
a portion of its supply of pig iron from
the Hopewell Furnace and the balance I
.rom furnaces in the district embraced
in it- operations. Hence if a lilier-'l
profit inn be made, say at I'ittsburg, hy
manufacturing bars from pig iron, a
largo portion of which is procured from ;
furnaces in the Juniata district, a much
larger profit xhotdd be realized by the
manufacture of iron bars in the vicini
ty wiiere the pig iron is produced, as
the freight- of the pig iron to Pittsburg I
and the return freight on manufactured ;
bars is saved, thus:
Freight on 11 tons of pig iron to
Pittsburg to make one ton of
Merchant bar sls fill
Freight on I ton of Merchant bar
from Pittsburgh) Broad Top SIO.OO
Total freight and expenses $25.00 j
Estimating $lO to coverall freight char
ge- on pig metal to and manufactured
tar from the proposed works, it show.-
a saving oi *15.00 nor ton on manuiac- J
tared iron. The demand Sor iron in the
Broad Top Coal region i- estimated sit
low tons per year, which at the mere
,-aving iti freight of *15,00 per ton will
give is 15,(m0.
It may be claimed that in Pittsburg
and other manufacturing town- skilled
labor: • .isily procured —tiii- it isbeliev
i-d will be fully compensated by the ad
vantages offered to such workmen by
cheap rents in a country location, when
! it is considered tliat the Broad Top n -
gion abounds in all the elements re
quired for the successful manufacture of
iron excellent coal coke and its justly
celebrated Juniata pig iron to work on,
ihe sueci -- of such an enterprise can
scarcely be doubted. It is confidently
ociieved that the quality of iron manu
factured will not, with ordinary care
and skill; be inferiorto any la thj) coun
try. It can therefore be e tiered in mar
ket with full reliance that it will give
i the purchaser entire satisfaction and
! thus secure u permanent demand.
Should the new Tariff Rill, a- recently
! passed by a large majority in tlie pop
ular House of Congress, become a law,
it would undoubtedly stimulate and
foster this great branch of the National
! industry, and give more than full work
; to all the rolling mills in the country
to supply th' home demafld.
Relieving the statements thus sub
mitted to be sub tantiallv correct, they
respectfully and earnestly invite theeo-
operation of their follow citizens in cs- :
tuhiishing the proposed works. They
eutertiiin nodoubt tlmt it; iiitlnstriji! fii

oranches of industry and commerce in

and wealth. This is no wild specula
tion, anticipating fabulous dividends,
but :i matter of industrial fact of supply
arid demand—looking to fair protiis a
lone on a careful investment in manu
facture demanded by tlie wants around
it, in a region of country whe re as yet
no such works have been established.
The opportunity, thus presented, is
now open to thecitizens to secure it-ad

quires little acumen to anticipate tlie*
fact that if there is not snliicienl enter
