F)is(-n*sON DEAD In i K FIZZLE.— <>n -day night last, the remnant "f the R publican" party, which clings to ie fortunes of the Stevens-Sumner held a meeting in the burt House. It was a poor, misera ble, flat, stale and unprofitable concern, iresenting the mo.-t "beggarly account f empty benches"that we ever look i upon in a political meeting. It the ::rn-out of this meeting is a sign of he time-, then the new breed of Di-- nionists is destined to ie short-lived :i this neck of the woods. Thespeech 6, too, were of the most luguoriou nd. W. M. Hall, Esq., was first in idueeti and ho proceeded to give the tidieals thunder, saying that they nt too far, and that lie favored ,-uf ■ for the Negro, only so_ far as he rasintellectually qualified to exercise hat right. This was a wet blanket a the Stevensite-and some of them t-rty nearly got the ague under it. W'Xt came that famous warrior, who ~ the splendor of -houlder straps and : buttons, fought rebel- in the pay aster's department and in the snug title office of state Agent at Wash . in. After Col. .Jordan's har • 2ue was finished, His Exeellenev, '• . Ces-na, was put upon the stand, • roared and bellowed for awhile then subsided as usual. PETER FUNK IN BEDFORD. —On i Monday last, as the inxiple attending court werestandingabouton thestreets, a seetly looking individual appeared in the midst of them, driving a buggy, i Standing up in the vehicle he proclaim ed that he was about to perform a vari ety of feats never before witnessed in Bedford. "Fir-t," said he, holding up a five dollar "green-back," "who will give me four dollars for this note?" Some one quickly handed him the four dollars and received the note. Next he sold the four dollars for three, the three for two, so on until he had only a num j ber of five cent notes left of the original 'green-back,'which he scattered among | the crowd. "Now," said he, "1 will : sell five dollar lockets, for two dollar • ai d a half and give you your money i hack." Accordingly the lockets were handed out and the money returned to the purchasers. "Next," proceeded he, "I will sell you ten dollar lockets for five dollars." Here a scene followed j which is indescribable. The crowd j made a simultaneous rush for the lock et-, each man charging with a green -1 back tlutt ring in his hand, and the : seedy looking individual in the buggy, had to use both his hands and all his fingers to receive the proffered money. Each man received his locket, hut — here the vender of the lockets broke in, "Remember, gentlemen. I didn't say, this time, 1 would give your money j back !" Oh ! what a fall of faces was there, my countrymen, as Peter Funk put whip to hi> horse and drove off be f(4iv any of the party "sold" could puck er his mouth for a whistle.
