A FIRST CLASS DINNER. —On Mou
thy last, mine host of the Bedford Ho
tel. Mr. Joshua J. Shoemaker, gave a
linner to his friends at which we were
•tmong the invited and entertainer!.—
Mr. Shoemaker is the very prince of
good fellow-, whilst Mrs. Shoemaker is
a model landlady and knows exactly
how to prepare the good things for the ;
table, 'file entertainment served up -
on thisoccasion was truly excellent, and
the guest.- who partook of it went away
satisfied in every respect. Nor can we j
>itiit a compliment to the gentlemanly '
ntaches of the house, Col. Stall 1, -Maj.
and ('apt. Alsip, who are always
<>n the alert to promote the comfort of
tho-e who fall into their hands. The
ia itle of i id. Hafer, glorious with the
iiicinories that cluster around it, has
truly fallen upon worthy shoulders. —
• g may the Bedford Hotel flourish
id may its proprietor live to see many
' y- of happine-s and prosperity.
BALLING PRICES. —The hearts of
thousands of consumers of goods are
Faddened with the gradual hut -tire
'h'ciine in price- which is noted from
week to week. People with small in

tew months ago to make both ends
meet. Goid has fallen aliout nine per
rent, -ince the first of March, and coal,
provision.-, dry goods, clothing, and all
t necessaries of life are following the :
downward tendency of gold. In New j
Vork. the hotel-keepers have under
i-ideration the propriety of reducing
th'-nriceof hoard. Every step towards j
J return to a specie basis, although it

CLAIM AGENTS. —Soldiers and sail
ors who make application for bounty
and back pay, should be very careful
with whom they trust their discharge
papers. Since the introduction into
Congress of thebillforthe equalization
of soldiers'bounties, hundreds of peo
ple of doubtful reputation have been
scattering circulars broadcast over the
country, stating that the bill will soon
i>e passed, and advisingsoldiersto send
their papers to the writers of the circu
lar- at once, so that the bounty can le
collected as soon as the hill passes. Sol
diers cannot be too careful of their pa- j
pers, and in selecting agents to prose- j
cute their claims should choose those j
only who are of established reputa- !
tion.
CULTIVATING POTATOES.—A corres
]x indentol" the i btutfrj/ frenlleman says:
"I would advise new beginners in rais
ing potatoes, not to be so particular a
bout the number of eyes the set of po
tatoes has, as the size of the pieee. A
potato smaller than a turkey's egg,
should never be used for planting.—
That size will make fewer sets. Plant
the rows three feet apart, and the sets
one foot in the row. Ground that has
the manure plowed in, in the fall, will
produce one-third more, and of an e
vener size, than that matured in spring
and planted immediately; the manure
absorbs the natural moisture of the
ground, and the eropistardier in sprout
ing."
SHADE TREES. —As spring approach
es, people naturally have something to
say about shade trees. "We would ad
vise our friends, who love a cool, re
freshing shade in summer, to plant
trees at once. The cost is trifling. Ev
ery person, whether in town or coun
try, having an unoccupied space around
their dwellings, should improve it by
planting either fruit, Shade or orna
mental trees.
PROPHETS have no honor in their
own country; but this cannot he said
of perfumes, inasmuch as Phalon's
"Night-Blooming Cereus," the home
manufactured product of the sweetest
flower- of the Western hemisphere, has
long since taken precedence of all exot
ic extracts on this side of the Atlantic.
Sold everywhere.
DURING the war improvements in
American manufactures progressed at
a rapid rate, and in nothing more rap
id than in cotton hosiery, i'ntil l*t>4
the American hosiery makers confined
themselves to the common grades of
ribbed hose, and attempted no compe
tition with England and Germany in
manufacturing finer good-. Now,
however, plain cotton hose, of the best
quality, is extensively made in the I'-
ll i ted States, and the manufacturers are
also extending their improvements in
underclothing, making the latter quite
as good as the imported articles.
A CV>ui NTH correspondent says that
it D estimated that upon the fields of j
Shiloh and Corinth, from which the'
Confederates retreated, leaving their j
dead on the field, there are not less ;
than 12,(NH1 Confederate dead, whose]
bones for the most part lie bleaching a
bove the ground, the rains having ,
washed away the thin layer of earth ;
with which the most were originally]
covered. The Federal dead were all j
neatly interred in the usual way, with
head "and foot boards in every instance,
and, in most cases, were inclosed with
wooden pailings.

The Spring Quarter of this Institution will open

This Institution is very pleasantly situated in
Friend's Cove, 8 miles from Bedford, the terminus
of the Huntingdon and Bedford Rail Road, and 21
miles from Cumberland, a station on the North
Central Kail Road. Rainsburg is a small, quiet,
and exceedingly healthy town, in the midst of
beautiful scenery, and sufficiently removed from
the influence of large towns and cities to render it
a most desirable location for a Literary Institution.
Its inhabitants are moral and religious, and there
are few temptations to vice, idleness or dissipation ;
situated in a rich agricultural section, this institu
tion.for Young Ladies and Gentlemen, is decidedly
the cheapest in the country. It is organized on the
most approved plan of the best Institutions of the
land; its main object is, to impart sound learning.
All branches, Scientifical, Classical and Ornamen

carefully attended to, and (without sectarian pre

by precept and example. -In things necessary,

rpo TIII: HONORARLH .JUDGES
I of the Court of Quarter Sessions of Bedford
county, Pa :
The Grand Jury of February Tenu. 1866, re
spectfully submit the following report : After a
careful inspection of the Poor House of the county
aforesaid. We are of the opinion that the Build
ing in which 'be paupers are kept is in a very bad
condition and totally unfit for the purposes for
which it is intended, because the bouse in addition
to the decay seems to be too small for the com
fortable quartering of the paupers and wayfarers
that continually crowd it. It would doubtless be
beneficial to the poor (as it is essentially necessa
ry that another house should be provided) and al
so to the tax-payers to have n location remotefrom
the Borough of Bedford and the turnpike. A
Poor House whether it is to be brick or not. and
not only this, but in consequence of the filthy eon
conditon which the house always seems to be in. is
a very excellent source for Epidemics which would
spread with great rapidity over this entire com
munity.
1 All of which is respectfully submitted, this 14th
day of February. 1866.

rp() THE HONORABLE JUDGES
2 of the Court of Quarter Sessions of Bedford j
Pa.:
The Grand Jury at February Term. 1666. re- j
spectfully submits the following report of the Jail j
of the county aforesaid as follows •
The Locks and Keys in our opinion are insuffi
cient for the safe keeping of Prisoners.
The Rooms also appear to be detrimental to the j
! health of the prisoners on account of the existence j
lof an offensive smell: insuffieiett and dirty Bed j
clothing, and torn chaff ticks.
j The rear wall of the Jail buildirg on the outside j
is being much injured in consequence of the bad j
i condition of the spouting, the wall receiving wa- •
I ter from the roof, rendering it measurably easy j
j for prisoners breaking through and effecting their j
escape
It is also noticed that one room is used for smo
king Bacon, rendering it extremely dangerous
from fire.
A coal house is also situated ugainst the wall of
the Jail building in the rear yard, and other rub- j
bish.
All of which is respectfully submitted, this 14th i
day of February, 1866.
