j THE CHOLERA.— Hall's Journal oi
Health gives the following suggestions,
which deserve the immediate attention
of all who wish to avoid the scourge ol
cholera, which threatens to attack us
next summer:
Ist. Every householder owes it to
himself, tohis family, to his neighbors,
to the community in which he resides,
to have his house, from cellar to garret,
from the street curb to the rear line of
his lot, most scrupulously cleansed by
sweeping, washing,and whitewashing.
2d. Every man who has any author
ity in city or town government should
consider himself bound by the oath of
office, and by every consideration of
humanity, to give himself no rest un
til every street, alley, close gutter, and
sewer is placed in a state of as perfect
cleanliness as possible, and kept so un
til the frosts of next season come.
, 3d. These eleansings should be done
now, in February and March, because,
if put off until warm weather, the very
effort necessary for the removal of filth
ivill only tend, in the essentia! nature
of tilings, to hasten the appearance of
the disease, to increase it- malignity,
and to extend the time of its devasta
tions; because the sun- of spring and
summer the sooner warm into life, and
intensify the vipericand malignant in
fluence which in its remorseless tread
wrecks so much of human happiness
and desolates so many hearthstones.
FIRE.— On the evening of the 2sth
ult., a two story log house, at the foot
of Dry Ridge, belonging to Mr. V.
Wertz, and occupied l>v Miss Sarah
Wertz and Mr. J. MundieVfamily, was
entirely destroyed by fire. The family
of Mr. Mundle succeeded in saving the
greater portion of their furniture, but
Miss Wertz, who was absent from home
at the time, lost nearly all of her bed
and body clothing, and about one hun
dred dollars in gold and silver.
TOTALETLIPS OF THE MOOX. —March
i- to close out as did January, with
nights made beautifulu by a full moon.
The almanac tell us that on the evening
of March 30th there will he a total e
efipse of the moon. The time will be
very favorable for observation, as it be
gins <tt five minuf<-s past nine o'clock,
isat it-total obscuration at twelve min
ute- past ten, and begins to di-appear
at fifty-one minutes past eleven. It
will be visible throughout the United
States.

NF.W FASHION FOR HORSES. —A cur
ious fashion for horses has recently come
in vogue. It is to closely shear the an
imal-'-hair over the entire body, giv
ing him a delicate and -tvlish appear
ance. The new fashion may do well e
nough in summer; but we should think
a sheared horse would suffer very much
in cold weather.
CALENDAR DAY. —An idea obtains
currency among "wise' person-, that
the last Friday in each month is to be
taken as a -ure indication of what the
1 weather will he in the month to come.
If this be true, then we are to have a
delightful timeof it during the March
that i- now upon us, for last Friday, it
will lie remembered, was a very pit as
ant day.

and warranted to be fast colors.
MOONLESS. —The month of Febru

marked in the astronomical calendar
as the month which had no full moon.
January had two full moons, but Feb
ruary none. March will have two full

TO THE PUBLIC.
THE NEW YORK News has battled against des

has been its only guide, and it refers now with hon

arbit ary power.
True to its principles as THE NEWS has boon
through the reign of terror, it challenges public
confidence in its honesty and independence for the
future.
The political transition of the present day opens
to THE NEWS a new and wider field of usefulness
Standing now as it always has, on the inviolability
of the Constitution, according to the interpret a ion
of the strict constructionists, it presents a rallying
ground for all. in both sections, who are friends ot
a generous conservatism As a true and tried ex

which makes it the fitting mediator in holding up
