HI AI, LMTTR(>OI.IB. -T"he "Republican's" '
of tliis county have been seriously em
ployed. for some weeks, in the business i
of "making a Governor." Theeandi- 1
dates from whom they were to make,
their selection, were the Honorables
John i essna andFr. Jordan. Between
these two men they could hardly
wrong in making a selection suitahleto
the wants of their party. Jordan hail
served them a life-time. He had done i
the dirty work for them when nobody
eFe would. He had fought for their
party when Cessna was a candidate on
the DEllF'ocratic ticket and stood up for
them a hundr-d times when i e.**na was
plotting Ho defeat their organization.
But, on the other hand, t 'essna had
trayed the Demoerat* and for this ser
vice they owed him a delu that must
he paid. The honest men in their par
ty, those who believe the laborer wor-
thy of hi- hire, therefore, deemed it
their duty to go for Cessna mid suppor
ted him suvordingly. The more slip
shod in this rtspeet, went for Jordan.
< >f course, the former were triumphant.
''Honesty i< the best policy" and al
ways will prevail. The .Jordan men
had no busings to try to repudiate the
debt their party owe-John Cessna. It
wasdishone>t, on their part, and they
could not e\j>ect to succeed in the ef
fort. We tolf\ them, weeks ago, that
their scheme would be beaten. Col.
Jordan should have taken our advice
and withdrawn from the canvass. But
he chose to persist in standing in the
way of the payment of the party's
honest debta and the result is that he
received, on Friday last, the vote of but
eight districts to Cessna's fourteen. It
is true that he (Jordan: carried every
Republican district but one, and lost
that one lv but two vot~. It is, also,
probable that be polled more votes in
the county than Cessna. But lie must
remember that a delegate elected by
one vote is worth a* much 111 the Cou
nty Convention, as one elected by titty.
He may plume himself outhefaet that
he carrier! the Woodberrie* over the
combined button-holing of Cessna and
the two exotics from that -eetion now
vegetating in this borough. Lie may
also fall back upon his dignity and say
that he remained quietly at home,
whilst his opponent \va* out begging
votes as though he were a candidate for
borough constable. But all this will
not break theseverity of his fall. And
0I1! what a fall was there, my country
men! Fr. Jordan, the leader of the
Republican party in Bedford county,
stricken flown in thehonseof his friends
by a man who, eighteen months ago.
professed to belong to the Democratic
party! We thank Mr. Cessna tor this
service. If he will go on killing the
leaders of the "Republican" party in
this fashion, we shall he happier than
ever at his defection from the Democra
cy. Go ahead, John! You am doing
hravelv!
FAIR DEALING. — Tht* Abolitionist?
base their reasons for the passage of
the Jury Commissioner Bill for this
county, on the ground that their party
was ignored in the selection of jurors.
The trutli is that they wore more liber
ally dealt with by the l>emoeratic Com
missioners than sueh ilignites as they ;
deserved. To show this fact we copy i
from the County Records, the follow- ;
ing list of Foremen of the Grand Jury
since 1860: John McVicker, Harrison; :
11. J. Bruner, C. Valley; A. B. Bunn,
S hellshurg: John ('. Viekroy, C. Val-1
ley; Sol. Williams, \V. Providence;!

well; J. W. Crisman. St. Clair; John !
Smith. Schellsburg; John S. Ritchev,

Napier; John Smith, Schellsburg; l
11. Wilson, Southampton; J. C. De- j
vore, Londonderry; W.Gillespie. Ju
niata; W. Hartley, Bedford Borough.
This show? eleven "Republicans" to
eleven Democrats, or an equal divis
ion of foremen of the Grand Jury, un
der Democratic Commissioners during
five years. Such is the fair-dealing
with which the minority party in this
county have leen treated in the jury
business. Let the public look at the
record and they will find it aswestateit.

WATSON —At '-The drove." near Bedford, on

in theWOth year'oi her age
The deceased was the widow of Dr. William Wat
son, whose death occurred thirty years ago. and
the mother of the present I)r. William H. Watson,
who is widely known, as was his father, by reason
of professional relation to the Bedford Springs
For many years Mrs Watson was one of the few
survivors of a generation which has nearly passed
away. For a long lime an invalid, her departure
was "yet unexpected, and though in the course of
nature, it was evident that ber death could not long
be delayed, and her friends thought they were, in
a measure,prepared forthe bereavement, yetwhen
it came it was severely felt. An affectionate moth
er, a sympathising friend, a woman of unusual dig
nity of character, she is greatly missed Her death
has made a sad vacancy in the time-honored man
sion so long associated with her memory, and in
the hearts of her numerous descendants and circle
of friends But there was much in her life that
will be held in pleasant remembrance, and the be
reaved family have reason for thankfulness that
tbey had such a mother, and had her to long. S.
